Who Is Fabral Roofing Systems?

Fabral has shaped the American metal roofing industry for more than fifty years. Founded in 1967, the company began as a regional supplier of durable steel panels. It grew into one of the nation's most respected names in metal building systems. From its early contributions during the Vietnam War to its leadership in today's energy-efficient construction movement, Fabral has built a reputation for craftsmanship, quality, and performance. Headquartered in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Fabral Roofing Systems manufactures lightweight, weather-resistant, and environmentally responsible metal panels used across agricultural, residential, commercial, and architectural projects.

In 2023, Flack Global Metals (FGM) acquired Fabral, marking its strategic entry into manufacturing. The acquisition also included CopperCraft, Fabral's architectural metals brand, expanding product capabilities for decorative and high-performance applications. Today, Fabral operates eight facilities across the United States, employs more than 200 specialists, and serves over 500 customers nationwide, maintaining its position as a trusted supplier in the metal building industry.

Why Are Non-Penetrating Fall Protection Anchors Critical For Fabral Standing Seam Roofs?

Non-penetrating fall protection anchors protect Fabral standing-seam roof systems while maintaining weather-tight performance and full OSHA compliance. Working safely on Fabral standing seam roofs requires fall protection systems that secure workers without damaging the panels. Because most of Fabral's roofs are floating systems, the seams and concealed clips expand slightly with temperature changes. Drilling or screwing directly into the panels restricts movement, eventually leading to leaks, oil canning, and loss of warranty coverage. By pairing Fabral's standing-seam roof systems with non-penetrating fall-protection anchors, contractors can protect the structure, preserve warranties, and ensure total worker safety across every jobsite.

Fall Protection Systems for Fabral Panels

To maintain the integrity of these high-performance systems, specialized fall protection is required. The following products provide the primary safety solutions for Fabral installations:

  • SSRA1 Standing Seam Roof Anchor: The foundation of the system. This anchor provides a non-penetrating, certified 5,000-pound tie-off point using 12 cupped-tip or nylon-tipped set screws.
  • SSRA2 Adjustable Roof Jack Adapters: Mount directly to the SSRA1 anchors to create level work platforms on steep slopes using 10-foot wooden walkboards.
  • SSRA3 Anchor Plate: Heavy-duty aluminum plates that secure across two SSRA1 anchors to serve as certified endpoints for horizontal lifelines.
  • SSRA HLL 100-foot Temporary HLL Kit: A complete turnkey system providing continuous tie-off for up to two workers in fall arrest, allowing safe lateral movement across wide spans.
  • 120-foot Super Anchor Permanent HLL Kit: An industry-exclusive galvanized-steel-cable solution for roofs requiring regular maintenance without penetrations.
  • Ridge Pro Steep Assist: A peak-mounted system for slopes between 6:12 and 12:12, providing 100% tie-off from the ladder to the ridge.

Proper Attachment: Set-Screws and Torque Requirements

  • Cupped-Tip Stainless Steel Set-Screws: Use these screws exclusively on 22-gauge steel panels. Torque these screws to 90 inch-pounds.
  • Nylon-Tipped Set-Screws: Apply these tips to 22-gauge or 24-gauge steel panels to achieve certified holding power without marking the finish. Torque these screws to 180-200 inch-pounds.
  • Maintenance: Treat nylon tips as consumables. Replace these tips every 3 to 5 uses to maintain maximum grip strength.

CRITICAL WARNING: NO IMPACT GUNS

Never use an impact gun to install set-screws. Over-torquing with an impact driver crushes the standing-seam rib. This installation error damages the anchor hardware and voids the manufacturer's warranty. Always use a calibrated torque wrench for final installation.

Safety Tips For Standing Seam Roofs

Cultivate a Safety Culture

Safety on a standing-seam roof begins long before the first anchor is installed. The most successful teams treat safety as a shared responsibility rather than a checkbox. Implementing a 10-minute morning "toolbox talk" to discuss specific site hazards, such as morning dew on Kynar finishes or incoming weather, keeps the crew alert. When team members feel empowered to call out risks, the entire jobsite becomes more efficient and secure.

Deploy Precision-Engineered Non-Penetrating Anchors

Using standard anchors undermines this functionality and causes costly leaks. Always use non-penetrating clamps, such as the SSRA1, which use cupped-tip or nylon-tipped set screws to grip the seam. These systems provide OSHA-compliant, 5,000-lb certified tie-off points while preserving the roof's structural integrity and factory warranty.

Implement Site-Specific OSHA Compliance Plans

Every metal roofing project presents unique challenges, from varying pitches to complex valley transitions. A written fall protection plan is essential. It should clearly define primary tie-off locations, verify that the selected anchors are compatible with the specific panel gauge, and outline a clear rescue procedure. Planning for the "what if" ensures the crew can act with confidence and speed in an emergency.

Invest in High-Performance Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS)

Your safety system is only as strong as its weakest link. Prioritize high-quality, breathable harnesses and responsive self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) from trusted brands like Malta Dynamics. Ensure that all gear is properly sized for each worker and is inspected daily for webbing fraying or mechanical lock-up. Modern, lightweight gear reduces fatigue, which is a leading contributor to jobsite accidents.

Mandate the Use of Suspension Trauma Straps

Stopping a fall is only the first half of a successful rescue. Every harness should be equipped with trauma straps, allowing the suspended worker to stand up and relieve leg pressure. This simple, affordable addition buys the rescue team critical time to arrive safely.

Utilize Guardrails for Passive Fall Protection

On large-scale commercial roofs or long-duration projects, guardrails offer an excellent passive safety solution. When installed around leading edges, skylights, or roof hatches, they create a physical barrier that prevents a fall from occurring in the first place. Guardrails are particularly effective in high-traffic work zones, reducing the need for constant active tie-off systems for every movement.

Require Specialized High-Traction Footwear

Metal panels can be incredibly slick when wet or covered in pollen or dust. Standard work boots often lack the traction needed for a superior grip on painted steel. Require crews to wear roofing-specific boots with slip-resistant outsoles and firm ankle support. Maintaining a stable center of gravity is your first line of defense against a slip-and-fall incident.

Master the Fundamentals of Ladder Safety

The transition from the ladder to the roof is one of the most dangerous moments of the job. Always follow the 4-to-1 rule (1 foot out for every 4 feet of height) and ensure the ladder extends at least 3 feet above the roof edge. Secure the ladder at the base and the top to prevent kickouts, and always maintain three points of contact. Training your crew on proper setup eliminates risks before they even reach the panels.

Consult Experts for Curved and Tapered Panel Systems

Architectural roofs with curved-radius panels or tapered seams pose attachment challenges for fall-protection anchors. Because load distribution changes on a curved surface, it is vital to have a fall protection specialist evaluate the site. They can determine if a specialized HLL configuration is the safest way to ensure compliance without damaging the roof's aesthetics.

Prioritize Permanent Lifeline Systems for Recurring Access

For buildings requiring regular maintenance (such as HVAC service or solar panel cleaning), a permanent horizontal lifeline system is a superior investment. Systems like the Super Anchor 120-foot Permanent HLL stay in place year-round, offering ready-to-use tie-off points for service teams.

Howie Scarboro, C.E.O. and co-founder of Fall Protection Distributors, L.L.C., recognized the need for continued improvements in roofing safety during the 2010 MetalCon show in Las Vegas. He joined forces with SnoBlox-Snojax, a leader in snow retention and seam clamping technology for metal roofs, to create the SSRA1 prototype. Tested by Gravitec for OSHA/ANSI certifications, the SSRA1 proved to be the industry's lightest, most robust, and most universal-fit anchor point for standing seam roofs. Fall Protection Distributors, L.L.C. was born in 2015, shaping the future of fall protection and instilling confidence in the industry.
