Who Is HPM Building Supply?

HPM Building Supply supports Hawaii's construction industry with locally focused manufacturing, deep material expertise, and more than a century of experience. HPM Building Supply has played a central role in Hawaii's construction industry for over one hundred years. Built on a reputation for quality materials, practical innovation, and dependable service, HPM has grown into one of the state's most trusted sources for residential and commercial building products.

Today, HPM supplies everything from pro-grade lumber, trusses, and engineered framing components to custom metal roofing and pre-engineered wall panel systems. Their operations support contractors working on single-family homes, multi-unit developments, and commercial facilities, all with materials tailored to Hawaii's unique climate and building requirements.

With locations spread across the Hawaiian Islands, including specialized lumberyards and home design centers, HPM ensures builders have local access to the materials and support they need to keep projects moving. Recent expansion to Lanai and the addition of a mainland distribution center in Washington further strengthen HPM's ability to serve both island and off-island construction demands.

What Are The Most Compatible Fall Protection Products For HPM Standing Seam Roofs?

HPM standing-seam roof panels require fall protection systems that safeguard workers without compromising panel performance. Standing seam panels supplied by HPM depend on concealed fasteners, engineered seam profiles, and controlled thermal expansion to stay weather-tight in Hawaii's demanding coastal environment. Drilling through finished panels for fall protection creates leak paths, and often voids warranties before the roof even enters service.

For that reason, non-penetrating fall protection systems are the standard for HPM standing-seam roofs. For steel 22-gauge and 24-gauge standing seam profiles that accept seam-mounted anchorage, the following products provide a complete safety solution:

  • Standing Seam Roof Anchor: A universal non-penetrating anchor that attaches to the seam using 12 stainless-steel set screws, providing a 5,000-pound certified tie-off point without drilling.
  • SSRA2 Adjustable Roof Jack Adapters: Adapters that mount to SSRA1 anchors to support a 10-foot walk board. These adapters provide adjustable height and roof pitch correction, creating a level surface to keep workers safe and provide a stable area for tools and equipment on steel metal roofs without penetrations.
  • SSRA3 Anchor Plate: A heavy-duty aluminum plate that spans two SSRA1 anchors to create a certified attachment point for horizontal lifeline systems.
  • SSRA HLL 100-foot Temporary Horizontal Lifeline Kit: A complete, portable lifeline system for up to two workers that allows safe lateral movement across wide roof sections without panel penetrations.
  • Super Anchor 120-foot Permanent Horizontal Lifeline Kit: A long-term safety solution featuring galvanized steel cables and non-penetrating riser posts for facilities requiring frequent maintenance access.
  • Ridge Pro Steep Assist Anchor: A ridge-mounted anchorage device that hooks over the peak to provide safe vertical lifeline access on pitches from 6:12 to 12:12.

Proper Attachment: Set-Screws and Torque Requirements

  • Cupped-Tip Stainless Steel Set-Screws: Use these screws exclusively on 22-gauge steel panels. Torque these screws to 90 inch-pounds.
  • Nylon-Tipped Set-Screws: Apply these tips to 22-gauge or 24-gauge steel panels to achieve certified holding power without marking the finish. Torque these screws to 180-200 inch-pounds.
  • Maintenance: Treat nylon tips as consumables. Replace these tips every 3 to 5 uses to maintain maximum grip strength.

CRITICAL WARNING: NO IMPACT GUNS

Never use an impact gun to install set-screws. Over-torquing with an impact driver crushes the standing-seam rib, causing permanent panel deformation and compromising the anchor's certified holding power. This error damages the anchor hardware, compromises worker safety, and voids the manufacturer's warranty. Always use a calibrated torque wrench for final installation.

Profile view of the Tropic-Lock nail strip fastener flange panel. Courtesy of www.HPMHawaii.com.

The Tropic-Lock is a nailstrip standing seam roof panel designed for fast installation and clean architectural results. It features a 1-inch rib height and uses an interlocking nailstrip seam that eliminates the need for separate clips. HPM manufactures the Tropic-Lock panel in 22-gauge and 24-gauge steel, as well as aluminum and copper. This panel is well-suited for residential roofs, light commercial projects, and fascia applications. See the Roof Anchor Compatibility Chart for HPM Building Supply 22 Gauge and 24 Gauge Tropic-Lock Nailstrip Standing Seam Panels.

Fall Protection For Tropic-Lock Panels

The nailstrip seam used on the Tropic-Lock panel does not provide a suitable clamping surface for seam-mounted fall protection anchors. SSRA anchors are not compatible with nailstrip profiles.

  • Ridge Pro Steep Assist: The most appropriate non-penetrating fall protection solution for pitches between 6:12 and 12:12. This ridge-mounted anchor hooks securely over the roof peak, allowing workers to connect a vertical lifeline before stepping onto the metal surface.

Engineered for Impact: Professional Safety vs. Generic Imports

When a worker's life depends on a single attachment point, the choice of anchor is the difference between a controlled arrest and a catastrophic failure. Our US-built SSRA system is precision-machined from high-tensile 6061-T6 aluminum. It has undergone exhaustive failure testing at independent ISO 17025-accredited laboratories. While the industry standard requires a breaking strength of 5,000 pounds, our anchors have withstood loads exceeding 14,500 pounds without structural deformation. Generic, unverified imports often lack OSHA-compliant documentation, leaving your crew's safety to guesswork.

You can review the full data-driven evidence of our independent laboratory test reports to see why the SSRA component system is the trusted choice for professional roofers across the country.

Safety Tips For Standing Seam Roofs

  • Use Specialized Anchor Systems for Standing Seam Roofs: Standing seam panels depend on engineered seams and concealed attachment to remain weather-tight. Non-penetrating anchors like the SSRA1 protect workers without restricting thermal movement.
  • Prioritize Ladder Safety Training: Improper ladder angle, unsecured tops, and uneven ground contact increase risk. A short ladder safety review before work begins prevents injuries during the most vulnerable part of the job.
  • Develop OSHA-Compliant Safety Plans: A written plan defines tie-off locations, walkboard placement, lifeline routing, and rescue responsibilities. Updating the plan keeps crews aligned when site conditions change.
  • Ensure Proper Footwear for Stability: Metal roofing surfaces can change quickly. Boots with aggressive tread and firm ankle support help workers stay balanced while transitioning across sloped roof areas.
  • Promote a Culture of Safety: Open daily discussions about access points, fall hazards, and tie-off plans help crews prevent accidents. Encouraging workers to speak up early creates a more controlled work environment.
  • Equip Workers with High-Quality Safety Gear: Well-fitting harnesses and responsive SRLs, such as the Malta Dynamics Pygmy Hog or Edgehog, allow workers to focus on the task, not on equipment concerns.
  • Install Permanent Roof Anchor Systems: Buildings that require regular maintenance benefit from Super Anchor permanent horizontal lifeline systems, which provide predictable tie-off points and reduce setup time.
  • Set Up Protective Guardrail Barriers for Work Zones: Guardrails offer constant, passive protection around skylights and edges, turning high-risk areas into clearly controlled work zones.
  • Encourage the Use of Trauma Straps: Every worker should carry them. They allow maintenance of circulation after a fall is arrested, until rescue is underway, making a critical difference in real-world scenarios.
  • Consult Experts for Curved Metal Panels: Curved roofs introduce variables that standard fall protection cannot always address. An evaluation protects workers, preserves the panel system, and prevents warranty issues.
