Who Is Zimmerman Metals?

Zimmerman Metals is a third-generation, family-owned metal fabrication and machining company that has shaped the industry since 1936. Founded by William George Zimmerman, the company has grown from a small metalworking shop into a leading manufacturer of roll-forming machines and structural steel components. Based in Denver, Colorado, Zimmerman Metals operates from a 150,000-square-foot facility on a 10-acre site, employing over 100 skilled professionals dedicated to precision engineering and innovation.

The company's legacy comprises craftsmanship, adaptability, and a commitment to producing high-quality metal products. Today, co-owners Mark Zimmerman and Taryn Christison lead the company, combining deep-rooted family values with cutting-edge technology to serve industries ranging from structural steel to roofing.

One of Zimmerman Metals' key specialties is manufacturing roll-forming machines for producing standing-seam metal roof panels. These American-made machines are engineered for durability, efficiency, and precision, making them a top choice for contractors and roofing professionals. By incorporating advanced features such as independent drive systems and stainless steel forming rollers, Zimmerman rollformers help reduce oil canning and ensure a smooth, high-quality panel finish.

While Zimmerman Metals is in the Rocky Mountain region, their machines can withstand diverse weather conditions, making them a trusted solution for roofing companies nationwide. With a focus on customization, Zimmerman offers a variety of portable and stationary roll-forming machines that allow contractors to produce panels on-site, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency. As a company rooted in innovation and quality craftsmanship, Zimmerman Metals continues to set the standard for roll-forming technology in the metal roofing industry.

Why Are Compatible Fall Protection Anchors Critical For Standing Seam Roofs?

Standing seam metal roofs are known for their durability, energy efficiency, and long-term weather resistance. However, their unique design presents specific challenges regarding fall protection. Unlike traditional roofing materials, which allow for direct anchor attachment to the structural decking, standing seam panels rely on concealed clips to secure the roof system. These floating connections accommodate thermal expansion and contraction, making standard fall protection systems unsuitable for these roofs.

Non-penetrating seam-mounted anchors are the safest and most effective solution.

The SSRA1 Standing Seam Roof Anchor serves as the primary solution for Zimmerman roll-formed panels. This anchor provides a certified 5,000-pound tie-off point by clamping securely onto the seams without requiring any panel modifications. You can expand the system with SSRA2 Adjustable Roof Jack Adapters to support 10-foot wooden walkboards, creating a stable platform for movement across steep slopes.

Adding SSRA3 Anchor Plates converts the anchors into connection points for horizontal lifelines. The 100-Foot SSRA Temporary HLL Kit allows multiple workers to move safely across the roof with continuous tie-off. For permanent maintenance requirements, the 120-Foot Super Anchor Permanent HLL Kit offers a cable solution that requires zero roof penetrations.

For roofs with pitches between 6:12 and 12:12, the Ridge Pro Steep Assist offers an alternative solution. This system hooks securely to the roof peak, providing a reliable tie-off point that keeps workers fully secured without requiring seam-mounted clamps. The Ridge Pro is particularly beneficial for standing seam panels made from aluminum, copper, or other lightweight materials where clamp-based anchors may not provide sufficient grip.

Proper Attachment: Set Screws and Torque Requirements

Worker safety and the certified holding power of the SSRA1 anchor depend entirely on correct set-screw application based on the material gauge of your roof panels:

  • Cupped-Tip Stainless Steel Set Screws: Use these exclusively on 22-gauge steel panels. Torque them to 90 inch-pounds for a secure, non-penetrating lock.
  • Nylon-Tipped Set Screws: Apply these to 22- or 24-gauge steel panels to achieve certified holding power. Torque them to 180–200 inch-pounds for maximum strength.
  • Maintenance: Treat nylon tips as consumables. Replace them every 3 to 5 uses to ensure they maintain the necessary coefficient of friction.

Critical Warning: No Impact Guns

Never use an impact gun to install set screws. Over-torquing with an impact driver will crush the standing-seam rib, damage the anchor hardware, and void the manufacturer's warranty. Always use a calibrated torque wrench for final installation.

See the Roof Anchor Compatibility Chart for Zimmerman Metals Arch12 Quick Span Standing Seam Metal Roof Panels.

Fall Protection For Arch12 Panels

While the Arch12 panel offers unparalleled structural performance, its curved design poses unique fall-protection challenges. Traditional standing seam anchors are often incompatible with curved panels, as the curving process can alter seam dimensions and reduce clamping effectiveness. Because of these variables, curved roof systems require advanced fall protection strategies.

CRITICAL WARNING: Curved Panel Inspection Required

Because the Arch machine rolls curved roof systems, all fall protection installations on these profiles must be inspected and approved by a trained safety expert to determine the most suitable and safe anchoring approach. Do not attempt to use standard seam-mounted hardware on curved panels without professional engineering verification.

Why American-Engineered Safety Is Your Best Insurance

In a market increasingly crowded with cheap global imports, it is easy to be tempted by a lower price tag. However, unbranded anchors often lack the verifiable third-party testing required to meet OSHA 1926.502 and ANSI Z359.18 standards. Choosing an "off-brand" solution can lead to business-ending liabilities if the equipment fails.

The SSRA system eliminates that uncertainty through the transparency of domestic engineering. We manufacture, lab-test, and certify every SSRA component right here in the United States. Choosing American-made safety equipment means you are investing in a domestic partnership built on reliability and documented proof of performance. For total peace of mind, you can review our official SSRA test reports and see the compliance data for yourself.

Promote a Culture of Safety

A strong safety culture starts at the top and filters down through every level of a job site. Leaders must consistently reinforce safe work habits, encourage open discussions about potential hazards, and provide ongoing training. When safety becomes second nature, workers are more likely to identify risks before accidents happen, creating a more secure and productive environment.

Use Specialized Anchor Systems for Standing Seam Roofs

Standard fall protection anchors often require drilling, compromising the integrity of standing seam metal roofs. Instead, workers should use seam-mounted anchors designed for non-penetrating attachment. Clamp-style seam anchors provide secure tie-off points without damaging the roof panels. Avoid relying on hidden clips, as they may not provide adequate support during a fall.

Set Up Protective Guardrail Barriers for Work Zones

Guardrails and warning lines act as passive fall protection measures, helping define safe work zones and preventing workers from unintentionally stepping too close to roof edges, skylights, or other openings. A well-placed guardrail system allows workers to focus on tasks without the constant concern of fall hazards.

Equip Workers with High-Quality Safety Gear

Reliable fall protection starts with adequately fitted, OSHA-compliant safety equipment. Harnesses, lanyards, and retractable lifelines must provide comfort and security to ensure workers wear them correctly for extended periods. Investing in high-quality gear promotes compliance and enhances overall job-site safety.

Ensure Proper Footwear for Stability

Roofing demands sturdy, slip-resistant footwear to prevent falls on slick or uneven surfaces. High-traction boots provide stability, reduce fatigue, and help workers maintain a secure footing, especially on steep metal roofs. Choosing footwear designed for roofing applications minimizes the risk of slips and injuries.

Develop OSHA-Compliant Safety Plans

Every roofing project should have a detailed fall protection plan outlining safety procedures, emergency response actions, and OSHA compliance requirements. Regular safety meetings reinforce these protocols and inform workers about the best fall prevention practices. A well-documented plan not only enhances safety but also ensures legal compliance.

Encourage the Use of Trauma Straps

Suspension trauma can be life-threatening if a fallen worker is left hanging in a harness for too long. Harnesses should include trauma straps that allow workers to relieve pressure on their legs while awaiting rescue. Training employees on their proper use ensures they can deploy them quickly in an emergency.

Prioritize Ladder Safety Training

Falls from ladders remain one of the leading causes of roofing injuries. Safety managers must train workers to inspect, position, and use ladders correctly, emphasizing the 4-to-1 rule, maintaining 3 points of contact, and ensuring the base is on a stable surface. Proper ladder safety prevents many avoidable accidents.

Install Permanent Roof Anchor Systems

Permanent anchor systems benefit buildings that require frequent rooftop access. These fixed tie-off points make it easier for maintenance crews to secure themselves without having to install temporary anchors repeatedly. A permanent system enhances safety while preserving the roof's structural integrity.

Consult Experts for Curved Metal Panels

Due to their unique shape, curved metal roofs require specialized fall protection. A trained safety professional can evaluate the structure and recommend the most effective anchor points and tie-off systems. Expert guidance ensures that workers remain secure while maintaining the integrity of the architectural design.
