Who Is Firestone – Elevate?

Elevate UNA-CLAD standing seam metal roofs combine premium materials, bold color choices, and proven performance for complex commercial roofing projects. Firestone Building Products now operates under the Elevate name, but the core story remains the same. The company still ranks near the top of the standing-seam market with its UNA-CLAD family of metal roof panels. Over the last 30-plus years, Elevate has rolled out systems that appear in stadiums, schools, airports, and large commercial buildings, where low weight, long life, and clean lines matter more every year.

Elevate pairs its standing seam panels with a deep menu of metals and finishes. Contractors can order copper, zinc, Acrylume, or PVDF-painted aluminum and steel in 31 standard UNA-CLAD colors. These panels integrate with Elevate Roofing Systems and Elevate ISO 95 plus polyiso insulation, so the roof, insulation, and metal skin all work together as a single system rather than a pile of parts. The result is a roof that stays light, handles fire and weather, and still meets demanding architectural requirements.

That mix of aesthetics, engineering, and compatibility is why designers keep going back to Elevate for extensive commercial work. The panels lock cleanly along long spans, pass rigorous performance testing, and still give architects the freedom to pursue more aggressive shapes and color palettes without sacrificing durability.

Why Is Non-Penetrating Fall Protection Crucial for Elevate's Panels?

Elevate UNA-CLAD steel standing seam roofs work best with SSRA non-penetrating anchors, Ridge Pro Steep Assist anchors, and lifeline systems. Working safely on Elevate UNA-CLAD standing seam roofs starts with one rule that never changes: Fall protection cannot penetrate the panels or crush the seams. Penetrations can cause roof leaks and affect the panel warranty.

For non-curved UNA-CLAD steel panels in 22-gauge and 24-gauge thicknesses, there are several compatible options:

Proper Attachment: Set-Screws and Torque Requirements

  • Cupped-Tip Stainless Steel Set-Screws: Use these screws exclusively on 22-gauge steel panels. Torque these screws to 90 inch-pounds.
  • Nylon-Tipped Set-Screws: Apply these tips to 22-gauge or 24-gauge steel panels to achieve certified holding power without marking the finish. Torque these screws to 180-200 inch-pounds.
  • Maintenance: Treat nylon tips as consumables. Replace these tips every 3 to 5 uses to maintain maximum grip strength.

CRITICAL WARNING: NO IMPACT GUNS

Never use an impact gun to install set-screws. Over-torquing with an impact driver crushes the standing-seam rib, causing permanent panel deformation and compromising the anchor's certified holding power. This error damages the anchor hardware, compromises worker safety, and voids the manufacturer's warranty for Elevate. Always use a calibrated torque wrench for final installation.

Don't Gamble with Safety: The Dangers of Unverified Cheap Import Anchors

Choosing low-cost standing-seam anchors may seem budget-friendly, but it can introduce significant risks to worker safety and project liability. These unbranded imports frequently lack the verified engineering, high-grade alloys, and rigorous third-party testing required to guarantee structural integrity during a fall. We eliminate this uncertainty by providing a premium, American-made solution in which every anchor is engineered in the USA and verified by ISO 17025-accredited laboratories to meet 5,000-pound load requirements. View our complete independent laboratory test reports to see how we compare to unverified imports.

Metal Roof Safety Tips For Standing Seam Roofs

  • Develop OSHA-Compliant Safety Plans: Crews should know where tie-offs begin, how lifelines run across UC-3, UC-4, UC-6, or UC-14 panels, and who handles rescue duties. Plan for the specific seam style and slope.
  • Equip Workers with High-Quality Safety Gear: Harnesses should fit snugly, and SRLs, such as the Malta Dynamics Pygmy Hog or Edgehog, should retract smoothly before work begins.
  • Use Anchor Systems Built for Standing Seam Roofs: Seam-mounted anchors, such as the SSRA1, are the best option for 22/24-gauge steel. They clamp directly to seams using 12 non-penetrating screws to maintain the warranty.
  • Set Up Protective Guardrails Near Hazards: Guardrails provide passive protection around skylights and eaves, reducing the reliance solely on personal fall arrest systems.
  • Promote a Culture of Safety: Review weather, roof conditions, and tie-off locations daily. Encourage workers to speak up about hazards on long Elevate panel runs.
  • Prioritize Ladder Safety Training: Stick to the 4:1 setup rule and secure the ladder at the top. When ladders are solid, the rest of the installation follows suit.
  • Ensure Proper Footwear for Stability: Metal roofing demands boots with grippy soles and ankle support to step confidently between anchor points.
  • Install Permanent Roof Anchor Systems: For HVAC or rooftop equipment checks, a permanent horizontal lifeline eliminates repeated setup and protects the roof year-round.
  • Encourage the Use of Trauma Straps: Trauma straps allow a suspended worker to stand and restore circulation while awaiting rescue. They are essential life-saving gear.
  • Consult Experts for Curved Metal Panels: A professional should evaluate curved roof systems in person to determine whether ridge-mounted solutions or specialized engineered systems are required.

Howie Scarboro, C.E.O. and co-founder of Fall Protection Distributors, L.L.C., recognized the need for continued improvements in roofing safety during the 2010 MetalCon show in Las Vegas. He joined forces with SnoBlox-Snojax, a leader in snow retention and seam clamping technology for metal roofs, to create the SSRA1 prototype. Tested by Gravitec for OSHA/ANSI certifications, the SSRA1 proved to be the industry's lightest, most robust, and most universal-fit anchor point for standing seam roofs. Fall Protection Distributors, L.L.C. was born in 2015, shaping the future of fall protection and instilling confidence in the industry.
