Hunter fall protection is a tree stand fall arrest system: a full body harness with a shock-absorbing tether, a tree strap that anchors you to the tree, and a lifeline or lineman's climbing strap that keeps you connected while you climb up and down. Every Malta Hunting harness here is third-party tested by Intertek to ASTM F2337, the standard test method for tree stand fall arrest systems.

Malta's instruction manual says to stay connected from the moment you leave the ground until you are back on it. A complete system has five parts:
A hunt essentials pack puts the harness kit, the 30 ft lifeline and the lineman's strap in one box.
| Situation | Stay connected with |
|---|---|
| Hanging a hang-on stand, sticks or steps | Lineman's climbing strap plus the tree strap and tether, staying doubly attached as you move past the platform |
| Climbing to and from a fixed stand that is already hung | A 30 ft lifeline with its prusik knot clipped to your harness tether |
| Sitting or standing in the stand | Tree strap and tether above your head with no slack, never attached to the stand itself |
| Two hunters on one tree | The two-user lifeline: one prusik and carabiner per hunter |
| After a fall, waiting for help | Suspension relief strap from your pocket, then your practiced recovery plan |
Always follow the instruction manual for your specific stand and harness. The full Malta manuals are linked on each product page.
Researchers at Marshfield Clinic and the Wisconsin DNR reviewed medically treated tree stand falls among deer hunters and found an average fall height of 12.5 ft, with 77% of falls during the archery-only season (VanWormer et al., Injury, 2016). The same paper calls tree stand falls the most common cause of injury to hunters in the United States, and describes typical stands as 10 to 30 ft off the ground. A fall from 12 ft is plenty to cause serious injury, which is why the gear above has to be worn from the first step to the last.
