How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Fit the harness. Don the harness, adjust the leg and chest buckles, and check the dorsal D-ring sits between the shoulder blades.
  2. Connect the lanyard. Attach the lanyard snap hook to the dorsal D-ring; the free end connects to a rated anchor.
  3. Verify clearance. A 6 ft energy absorbing lanyard needs roughly 18.5 ft of clearance below the anchor; run the calculator on this page.
  4. Inspect before each use. Webbing, stitching, hardware, and the energy absorber pack.
  5. Store it in the kit. The bag or bucket keeps the set complete and clean between jobs.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect harness and lanyard before each use, with a documented competent person inspection at least annually.

  • Webbing: cuts, burns, fraying, UV chalking, and chemical damage.
  • Stitching: broken or pulled threads at load-bearing seams.
  • Hardware: buckles, D-rings, and snap hooks free of cracks, corrosion, and gate defects.
  • Energy absorber: pack cover intact with no deployment evidence.
  • Labels: legible with serial and date in the inspection log.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event, deployed absorber, damaged webbing or hardware, or a failed inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is in the kit?
A FallTech Contractor series full-body harness and a 6 ft single-leg energy absorbing lanyard with plated alloy steel snap hooks, packed together with the storage bag or bucket named in the description. Nothing else is required except a rated anchor point.
What sizes does the harness cover?
The Contractor series harness is a universal fit covering the majority of workers, with adjustable leg, chest, and torso strapping. Weight capacity is 310 lb ANSI and up to 425 lb under OSHA per the manual.
What standards do the components meet?
The harness is certified to ANSI Z359.11-2021 and the energy absorbing lanyard to ANSI Z359.13-2013, and both meet OSHA 1926.502 requirements. Each component carries its own DoC, linked in the submittals section. FallTech DoC #B0804158a covers the 7016 harness and DoC #C1215020 covers the 8259 lanyard.
How much fall clearance does a 6 ft lanyard need?
Roughly 18.5 ft from the anchor to the nearest obstruction: 6 ft of lanyard, up to 4 ft of deceleration, plus body length and a safety factor. If you do not have that clearance, use an SRL instead; the calculator on this page runs your numbers.
Can I anchor the lanyard at my feet?
No. A standard 6 ft energy absorbing lanyard is designed for anchorage at dorsal D-ring height or above. Foot-level tie-off requires a leading-edge rated device.
