Who Needs This Product

Restraint is the smartest fall protection there is: rig the lanyard short enough that the worker cannot reach the edge, and the fall never starts. Crews use fixed and adjustable restraint lanyards on roofs, aerial lifts, and elevated platforms where the work zone can be defined. Restraint lanyards have no energy absorber because they are never exposed to free fall.

Complies

Complies with ANSI Z359.3-2019.

Restraint only works if the edge stays out of reach. This lanyard has no energy absorber and is never rated for free fall. Rig it so the worker cannot reach the fall hazard at full extension, or use a fall arrest connector instead.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.3-2019

Applicable requirement for this equipment: ANSI Z359.3-2019.

OSHA 1926.502

Construction fall protection criteria for personal fall arrest system components, including connectors, lanyards, and lifelines.

Typical Applications

Aerial liftsRestraint inside boom lift baskets per manufacturer rules.
Low-slope roofsKeeping workers back from unprotected edges.
Elevated platformsDefined work zones short of the edge.
Rail and dock edgesFixed-length restraint at repetitive stations.
Utility and telecomPositioning short of the hazard.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Measure the zone. The lanyard length, plus your reach, must stop short of the fall hazard.
  2. Connect both ends. Harness attachment to a rated anchor with the hooks or loop provided.
  3. Set adjustable models. Dial the length so the edge is out of reach even at full stretch.
  4. Keep it restraint. If the geometry allows any free fall, switch to an energy absorbing lanyard or SRL.
  5. Inspect and log. Webbing, hardware, and stitching before each use.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent person inspection at least annually.

  • Webbing, rope, or cable: cuts, fraying, kinks, corrosion.
  • Adjusters: hold position under load; no slipping.
  • Hooks: gates close and lock; no deformation.
  • Labels: legible and logged.

Retirement triggers: any fall loading, damaged line or hardware, or a failed inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between restraint and fall arrest?
Restraint prevents the fall: the lanyard is rigged short enough that you cannot reach the edge. Fall arrest catches you after a fall and requires an energy absorber and clearance. This lanyard is for restraint and positioning only, never free fall.
Which length do I need?
Measure from your anchor to the closest approach you need, subtract your reach, and pick the length (or adjustment range) that keeps the edge beyond you at full extension.
Why is there no shock absorber?
Because a properly rigged restraint system never sees free fall, there are no arrest forces to absorb. If your geometry allows any free fall, use an energy absorbing lanyard or SRL instead.
Can I use this in an aerial lift?
Restraint lanyards are the standard connection in boom lifts where the manufacturer requires occupants to be restrained from ejection. Verify your lift manufacturer's requirements for restraint versus arrest.
What standard applies?
ANSI Z359.3 covers positioning and travel restraint lanyards, along with OSHA 1926.502. The DoC is linked in the submittals section.
