VL58 Poly Steel Rope Lifeline with Snap Hook, 25 to 300 ft

The Guardian VL58 is the bare 5/8 in poly steel rope lifeline for crews that already run their own rope grabs: a cut-resistant, moisture-resistant vertical line with a locking snap hook spliced on the anchor end. It is the same rope used in Guardian VLA assemblies, without the grab and shock pack, sold in lengths from 25 to 300 ft.

Pair it with a compatible 5/8 in rope grab and shock absorbing extension to build a complete vertical lifeline system that meets OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140 for workers from 130 to 310 lbs. Shorter lengths ship as 2-packs; 100 and 300 ft ship as singles.

Who Needs This Product

The VL58 is replacement and fleet rope: contractors who standardize on 5/8 in trailing rope grabs buy lifelines bare and move their grabs between lines as rope wears out. It also covers long-drop applications, with 100 and 300 ft lengths for towers, tanks, and multi-story facades where an assembly-length line falls short. The 25 and 50 ft lengths ship as 2-packs to keep fresh rope on the truck. To get a complete ready-to-use system with grab and shock pack included, choose the Guardian VLA instead.

Features

Durable poly steel rope

5/8 in polyester-over-steel-core construction resists cuts, abrasion, and moisture on rough surfaces.

Locking snap hook end

Spliced-on hook connects directly to compliant anchor D-rings.

Grab compatible

Sized exactly for 5/8 in trailing rope grabs like the Guardian 01508 and Grab-R.

High-visibility yellow

The line reads clearly against roofing, steel, and concrete.

Four length options

25 and 50 ft in 2-packs for residential fleets; 100 and 300 ft singles for long vertical drops.

Same rope as Guardian VLAs

A rope alone is not a fall arrest system. The VL58 must be paired with a compatible 5/8 in rope grab and a shock absorbing connector, a compliant anchor, and a full body harness. Verify the complete system with a competent person, and never use a grab sized for a different rope diameter.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 1926.502

Meets construction vertical lifeline requirements when rigged as part of a complete system.

OSHA 1910.140

Meets general industry personal fall protection system requirements.

ISO 17025 lab tested

Tested in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory; the test report is available in the documentation section below.

5/8 in grab compatibility

Diameter matched to standard 5/8 in trailing rope grabs; never mix rope and grab sizes.

Typical Applications

Roofing fleetsReplacement lines for crews that own their rope grabs.
Tower and stack access100 and 300 ft lengths for long vertical drops.
Tank inspectionFull-height lines on standpipes and silos.
Multi-story facadesVertical access on high-rise exterior work.
Bridge maintenanceLong lines for under-deck and pier access.
Wind energyTower internals and transition pieces.
Plant maintenanceStandardized 5/8 in lines across the site.
Rope replacement programsSwap worn lines on schedule without rebuying grabs.

Rigging Overview

Rigging must follow the Guardian lifeline and rope grab instruction manuals. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect first. Check the full length of rope, the splice, and the snap hook before every use.
  2. Connect to the anchor. Attach the snap hook to a compliant anchorage connector rated 5,000 lbs and confirm the gate locks.
  3. Install the grab. Mount a compatible 5/8 in rope grab on the line in the correct orientation per the grab manual.
  4. Connect the worker. Attach the grab shock absorbing extension to the dorsal D-ring of the full body harness.
  5. Manage the line. Drape the rope clear of edges; on long drops, weight or secure the bottom end per the manual.
  6. Verify clearance. Confirm fall clearance below the work area and minimize swing fall hazards.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before every use, and have a competent person perform a documented inspection at least every six months under ANSI Z359.2 practice. Remove the rope from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Rope: cuts, abrasion, glazing, flat spots, chemical damage, or core exposure anywhere along the length.
  • Splice: pulled, distorted, or damaged strands at the hook termination.
  • Snap hook: cracks, corrosion, deformation, or a gate that does not close and lock automatically.
  • Contamination: paint, tar, or chemical saturation that hides or degrades the rope.
  • Labels: missing or illegible.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event on the line, visible core, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the rope is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the VL58 and a vertical lifeline assembly?
The VL58 is the bare lifeline: 5/8 in poly steel rope with a snap hook on the anchor end. A vertical lifeline assembly (VLA) adds an installed rope grab, shock pack, and lanyard extension. Buy the VL58 when you already own compatible grabs; buy the VLA when you want a complete ready-to-use system.
Which lengths come in 2-packs?
The 25 ft (01330) and 50 ft (01340) lengths ship as 2-packs for residential fleets that stock replacement rope. The 100 ft (01360) and 300 ft (01346) lengths ship as single lines for long-drop applications.
Which rope grabs fit this line?
Any grab rated for 5/8 in rope, including the Guardian 01508 rope grab and the Grab-R 01503 with its 3 ft shock absorbing extension. Never use a grab sized for a different rope diameter.
What is poly steel rope?
Poly steel is a polyester-over-steel-core construction that resists cuts, abrasion, and moisture better than plain synthetic rope, which extends service life on abrasive surfaces like shingles, steel, and concrete.
Which standards does the VL58 meet?
Rigged as part of a complete system, the VL58 meets OSHA 1926.502 and OSHA 1910.140 for workers from 130 to 310 lbs including tools, with a 5,000 lbs tensile strength. The ISO 17025 lab test report is linked below.
Can I use the 300 ft length for tower work?
Yes. The 300 ft (01346) single line is built for long vertical drops on towers, stacks, tanks, and facades. Secure or weight the bottom end per the manual, and confirm the full system rigging with a competent person.
When should the rope be retired?
Retire it after any fall arrest on the line, any visible core or glazing, splice damage, or chemical contamination. Many fleets also retire lifelines on a fixed service schedule regardless of appearance.
