Grab-R Rope Grab with 3 ft Shock Absorbing Extension

The Guardian 01503 Grab-R pairs the proven 5/8 in trailing rope grab with a 3 ft shock absorbing extension lanyard, permanently attached and ready to clip to the harness. The grab trails hands-free along the lifeline as the worker moves, locks instantly in a fall, and the integrated shock pack limits the forces that reach the worker.

The Grab-R fits 5/8 in rope only, supports workers from 130 to 310 lbs including tools, and carries a 5,000 lbs tensile strength. It meets OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140 as the fall arrester and connector in a vertical lifeline system.

Who Needs This Product

The Grab-R is the one-piece answer for crews building vertical lifeline systems from bare rope: grab, shock absorber, and connector arrive as a single assembly, so there is no mixing of components and nothing to source separately. The 3 ft extension gives the worker useful standoff from the line while the shock pack handles arrest forces. Mount it on a Guardian VL58 lifeline, clip the snap hook to the dorsal D-ring, and the system is complete. Fleets that already stock their own extensions can buy the bare 01508 grab instead.

Features

All-in-one arrester

Grab, 3 ft extension, and shock absorber ship permanently assembled; nothing to source or mismatch.

Integrated shock pack

The extension absorbs arrest energy, limiting the forces transmitted to the worker.

Trails with the worker

Follows along the lifeline during climbing and repositioning, eliminating manual device moves.

Automatic fall locking

Cams onto the rope instantly under fall loading to limit arrest distance.

Zinc-plated steel grab

Corrosion-resistant construction stands up to weather and jobsite contamination.

5/8 in rope compatibility

Sized exactly for 5/8 in lifelines like the Guardian VL58 poly steel and Polydac ropes.

Match the rope, mind the termination. The Grab-R is compatible with 5/8 in rope diameter only. Eliminate lower-end termination risk: ensure the lifeline prevents the user from striking the next lower level or terminate the line per the manual. Maximum one attachment per connection point, and account for the 3 ft extension plus shock pack deployment in your fall clearance.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 1926.502

Serves as the fall arrester and connector in compliant construction vertical lifeline systems.

OSHA 1910.140

Meets general industry personal fall protection system requirements.

ISO 17025 lab tested

Guardian rope grabs are tested in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.

System compatibility

Use only with 5/8 in lifelines and a compliant anchor and harness; a competent person must verify the system.

Installation Overview

Installation must follow the Guardian rope grab instruction manual (85072). The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect first. Check the cam, body, extension webbing, shock pack, and snap hook before every use.
  2. Verify the rope. Confirm the lifeline is 5/8 in diameter and compatible per the manual.
  3. Mount the grab. Install the grab on the line in the correct orientation; the arrow on the body must point up toward the anchor.
  4. Connect the worker. Clip the extension snap hook to the dorsal D-ring of the full body harness and confirm the gate locks.
  5. Test the action. Confirm the grab trails freely and locks when pulled sharply down-line.
  6. Verify clearance. Confirm fall clearance below the work area, including the 3 ft extension and shock pack deployment.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before every use, and have a competent person perform a documented inspection at least every six months under ANSI Z359.2 practice. Remove the Grab-R from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Cam: worn, smoothed, or damaged teeth that do not bite the rope.
  • Body: cracks, corrosion, deformation, or damaged rivets and pins.
  • Extension: cut, frayed, or abraded webbing, damaged stitching, or any shock pack deployment.
  • Snap hook: cracks, deformation, or a gate that does not close and lock automatically.
  • Action: a grab that does not trail freely or does not lock instantly under load.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event, shock pack deployment, cam or body damage, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the device is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Grab-R 01503 and the 01508?
Both use the same 5/8 in trailing grab platform. The 01503 Grab-R adds a permanently attached 3 ft shock absorbing extension with a locking snap hook, making it a complete arrester-connector in one piece; the 01508 is the bare grab for fleets that supply their own extensions.
What rope does the Grab-R fit?
The Grab-R is compatible with 5/8 in diameter rope only, matching the Guardian VL58 poly steel and Polydac lifelines. Never use a rope grab on a diameter it is not rated for.
How much clearance does the system need?
Account for the 3 ft extension, the shock pack deployment, harness stretch, and the worker height below the D-ring, plus a safety factor. Use the fall protection calculator on this page to run your exact numbers before anyone ties off.
How does the trailing action work?
The grab follows the worker along the lifeline during normal movement. When a fall suddenly loads the device down-line, the cam rotates and locks onto the rope instantly, and the extension shock pack absorbs the arrest energy.
Which standards does the Grab-R meet?
As the fall arrester and connector in a complete vertical lifeline system, the 01503 meets OSHA 1926.502 and OSHA 1910.140 for workers from 130 to 310 lbs including tools, with a 5,000 lbs tensile strength.
What else do I need for a complete system?
A 5/8 in lifeline with a compliant 5,000 lbs anchor and a full body harness. The Guardian VL58 ropes and Temper or Ridge-It anchors complete the system.
When should the Grab-R be retired?
Retire it after any fall arrest, any shock pack deployment, worn cam teeth, damaged webbing, or a hook that does not lock. When in doubt, take it out of service.
