Non-Penetrating Design - Perfect For Standing Seam Roofs
These set screws are engineered with precision to ensure a permanent, non-penetrating attachment of the SSRA1 and other clamps to standing seam panels. The cupped tip design allows for a secure grip without compromising the integrity of the roofing material. These set screws are suitable for short-term, long-term, or permanent installations where safety and reliability are paramount. Workers should install cupped-tip set screws by starting them into the threads by hand to avoid cross-threading. Be sure that the screws are turning smoothly by hand before switching to a screwgun with a 3/16" Allen bit for final installation. Installers should avoid the use of impact guns on these types of set screws as they can quickly over-torque the screws and damage the clamp threads. Our stainless-steel cupped tip set screws can withstand the rigors of professional use. They ensure longevity and consistent performance, making them dependable for securing your fall protection systems.
Benefits of Cupped Tip Set Screws
Secure Attachment
The cupped-tip design ensures a firm, non-slip grip on standing-seam panels, reducing the risk of movement during installation.
Coarse Threads
Coarse-thread set screws are far less likely to lock up in the soft aluminum threads of a clamp or anchor during installation. Fine-threaded set screws tend to bind in the soft aluminum threads of clamps during installation.
Versatile Compatibility
They are compatible with various products, including the SSRA1, RC Clamp, RCT Clamp, and our comprehensive kits.
Contractor-Ready
Keep an extra set on hand to avoid delays due to lost or dropped screws, ensuring your project stays on track.

Cupped Tip Set Screw Frequently Asked Questions
What is the primary difference between cupped tips and nylon tips?
Cupped tip set screws feature a hardened concave edge that provides a mechanical "bite" into the metal seam. They are optimized for 22-gauge steel, where maximum grip is required. Cupped-tip screws get torqued to 90 in/lbs. Nylon tips provide a non-marring hold and are required for thinner 24-gauge panels. Nylon-tip screws get torqued to 180-200 in/lbs.
Can I use cupped tip screws on 24-gauge steel roofs?
While they will physically fit, we do not recommend cupped tips for 24-gauge steel. The sharp edges of the cup can deform or tear thinner metal under fall-arrest loads. For 24-gauge panels, always use nylon-tipped set screws to maintain roof integrity.
What is the correct torque setting for cupped tip screws?
When used with an SSRA1 anchor on 22-gauge steel, cupped-tip screws must be tightened to 90 inch-pounds with a calibrated torque wrench. Overtightening can strip the aluminum threads of the anchor body.
Are these cupped tip screws reusable?
Yes. Unlike nylon tips, which are consumable, stainless steel cupped tip screws are highly reusable. However, they should be inspected before each installation; if the cup edge becomes dull or the threads show wear, replace them immediately.
Will these screws cause rust on my standing seam roof?
No. These screws are manufactured from high-grade stainless steel to prevent galvanic corrosion. They are designed to withstand harsh environments and have been ANSI/ASTM B-117 salt-spray tested for long-term durability.
Why are coarse threads used on these set screws?
Coarse threads are specifically chosen for use with aluminum clamps. Fine threads are prone to "galling" (locking up) inside the soft aluminum threads of the SSRA1 body. Coarse threads allow for smoother installation and easier removal without damaging the anchor.
How do I avoid common installation problems with cupped tip screws?
To ensure a safe installation and protect your equipment, follow these three rules:
- 1. Hand Start Only: Always thread the screws in by hand for the first few turns. This ensures the threads are properly aligned and prevents cross-threading.
- 2. No Impact Drivers: Never use an impact gun. The high-speed vibration can instantly strip the threads in the aluminum anchor body. Use a standard drill for speed and a torque wrench for final tightening.
- 3. Steel Only: Confirm your roof is steel. Cupped tips will tear through copper or aluminum seams like a hole-punch and will not provide a certified hold.
