Who Needs This Product

Confined space entrants, attendants and rescue teams who need shoulder D-rings for vertical entry and retrieval, plus a dorsal D-ring for fall arrest.

Features

Paired Hip D-Rings

Alloy steel hip D-rings rated 5,000 lbf are used as a pair for work positioning: rebar tying, form walls, pole and structure climbing. Back them up with a fall arrest system.

Front (Sternal) D-Ring

A front D-ring for ladder climbing with a guided-type fall arrester or an overhead SRL where a fall can only occur feet first, and for work positioning.

Shoulder D-Rings for Retrieval

Paired shoulder D-rings for rescue and entry/retrieval, best used with a spreader yoke so the shoulder straps stay separated during a vertical lift.

Quick Connect Buckles

Quick connect buckles click home with one hand and release with a squeeze of the side levers, so donning and doffing between tasks takes seconds, even with gloves on.

Integrated SRL Adapter

The easy-link adapter accepts pin style personal SRLs right at the back, which 3M says cuts install time by up to 55% compared to web-mounted installation.

Self-Locking Dorsal Pad

The new dorsal pad locks the back D-ring in place so it does not slide down the back, keeping the fall arrest connection between the shoulder blades where it belongs.

⚠

Shoulder D-rings are for rescue and retrieval only. Use them as a pair with a spreader yoke and never for fall arrest. Fall arrest connects to the dorsal D-ring. Retire the harness after any fall arrest event.

Compliance Standards

ANSI/ASSP Z359.11-2021

Certified full body harness, ANSI capacity 130 to 310 lb (59 to 140 kg) including clothing and tools.

OSHA 1910.140 and 1926.502

Meets OSHA personal fall protection requirements for general industry and construction, rated up to 420 lb (190 kg).

1,800 lbf System Limit

Use with connecting subsystems that limit maximum arrest force to 1,800 lbf (8 kN) or less, per ANSI Z359.11 Annex A.

Annual Competent Person Inspection

User inspection before every use plus a documented competent person inspection at least once a year.

Typical Applications

Confined Space EntryVertical entry with a tripod or davit and a retrieval line on the shoulder D-rings.
Tank and Vessel WorkEntry, inspection and cleaning with an attendant topside.
Manholes and VaultsUtility and municipal entries that require a retrieval plan.
Rescue TeamsHarness for entrants who may need to be pulled out quickly.

How to Use

Donning and fit steps from the 3M ExoFit X50 user instructions (form 5908600):

  1. Inspect first. Check webbing, stitching, impact indicators, D-rings, buckles and labels per the inspection log. Disconnect all buckles and empty your pockets.
  2. Put it on. Lift the harness by the dorsal D-ring, slip on the torso straps and let it hang from your shoulders with the chest buckle in front. Check that no straps are twisted.
  3. Buckle legs, then chest. Secure the leg straps first, then the chest buckle.
  4. Adjust the fit. Set the sub-pelvic strap just below the buttocks, snug the leg straps, then the torso straps with the revolver or pass-through adjusters. Stow loose strap ends in the keepers.
  5. Check the D-ring. The dorsal D-ring sits between your shoulder blades. Have a second trained worker verify the fit.
  6. Connect the system. Attach your SRL or energy absorbing lanyard to the dorsal D-ring or SRL adapter, anchored to a rated anchorage, with a rescue plan in place.

Inspection and Retirement

The user inspects the harness before each use, and a competent person other than the user inspects it at least once a year under ANSI and OSHA. Keep a written log for each harness; the RFID tag makes that fast.

  • Hardware: D-rings, buckles and adjusters free of cracks, distortion, sharp edges and corrosion; buckles engage and release properly.
  • Webbing and stitching: no cuts, frays, broken fibers, tears, abrasion, heavy soiling, mold, burns or discoloration; no pulled or cut stitches.
  • Impact indicators: all stitched impact indicators intact.
  • Labels: present and legible, including the RFID tag.
  • Attached components: SRL adapter, trauma straps and keepers in working order.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest or impact force, a failed inspection, or damage beyond the limits in the manual. The harness is not repairable. Clean with mild bleach-free detergent, air-dry below 130°F and store out of direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DBI-SALA ExoFit X50 Vest Climbing/Positioning/Retrieval harness?
It is the vest climbing/positioning/retrieval configuration of the ExoFit X50, 3M DBI-SALA's entry level full body harness series. This model has Back, Front, Hip, Shoulders attachment elements, a quick connect chest buckle and quick connect leg buckles. Stocked sizes: Medium/Large, X-Large, 2X-Large.
What is the weight capacity of the ExoFit X50?
Under ANSI/ASSP Z359.11-2021 the capacity is 130 lb to 310 lb (59 kg to 140 kg), and under OSHA the harness is rated up to 420 lb (190 kg). Capacity is the combined weight of the worker, clothing and tools, and the whole system is limited by its lowest rated component.
How strong are the D-rings, buckles and webbing?
Per the 3M user instructions, every attachment element is alloy steel (or polyester web loop) rated 5,000 lbf (22.2 kN), the buckles and adjusters are rated 4,000 lbf (18 kN), and the polyester webbing is rated 6,000 lbf (27 kN).
What are the shoulder D-rings used for?
Rescue and entry/retrieval. 3M requires them to be used as a pair and recommends a spreader yoke to keep the shoulder straps apart. They are never a fall arrest connection.
How much fall clearance does this harness need?
Add the 1.5 ft maximum harness stretch to the free fall, deceleration distance and worker height from your lanyard or SRL instructions, plus a safety margin. Our free Fall Protection Calculator runs the math for your setup.
What standards does the ExoFit X50 meet?
ANSI/ASSP Z359.11-2021 for full body harnesses and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140 and 1926.502. Use it in a personal fall arrest system that limits maximum arrest force to 1,800 lbf (8 kN) or less.
How often does the harness need to be inspected?
The user inspects it before every use, and a competent person other than the user inspects it at least once a year under ANSI and OSHA, more often in harsh conditions. Log each inspection and remove the harness from service after any fall arrest.

About DBI-SALA

DBI-SALA is one of the most specified fall protection brands in the world, tracing its roots to two pioneering companies, DBI and SALA, whose combined engineering heritage spans more than 75 years. Built into a global leader through Capital Safety, and part of the 3M family since 2015, DBI-SALA equipment is engineered with primary manufacturing and training facilities in Red Wing, Minnesota.

The brand sets the benchmark for premium fall protection: ExoFit full-body harnesses, Nano-Lok personal self-retracting lifelines, Ultra-Lok SRLs, shock-absorbing lanyards, and complete anchorage and confined-space solutions. Every DBI-SALA product is designed and tested to meet or exceed OSHA and ANSI Z359 standards, with rigorous in-house testing that has made the brand the specification standard on commercial construction, energy, and industrial projects worldwide. When engineers and safety managers write DBI-SALA into the spec, it is because the brand has spent decades proving that its equipment performs when a life is on the line.
