Suspension Trauma Strap, 4-Pack

The Guardian 10733 Trauma Strap is the piece of gear you hope never deploys: after a fall arrest, it lets the suspended worker step into a loop, stand up in the harness, and relieve the leg-strap pressure that causes suspension trauma, which can set in within 15 minutes of hanging in a harness. Restoring blood flow to the legs buys critical time until rescue.

Each strap attaches to any Guardian full body harness, rides in a low-profile pouch that stays out of the way during work, and adjusts quickly after deployment. This 4-pack outfits a full crew, because a trauma strap only helps the worker who is wearing one.

Who Needs This Product

Every worker who ties off in a full body harness should carry a trauma strap, and OSHA expects employers to plan for prompt rescue after a fall arrest. After a fall, harness leg straps compress the veins in the legs; the resulting blood pooling can cause a suspended worker to lose consciousness in as little as 15 minutes. Deploying the strap and standing up in the loop relieves that pressure and extends the safe suspension window until the crew executes the rescue plan. This 4-pack equips a typical residential or commercial crew.

Features

Mitigates suspension trauma

Lets the fallen worker assume a standing position in the harness, relieving leg-strap pressure and restoring blood flow.

Fits every Guardian harness

Attaches to any Guardian full body harness, from the Velocity to the Series 3.

Low-profile pouch

Rides on the harness without snagging or interfering with tools and lanyards during normal work.

Fast, adjustable deployment

The suspended worker opens the pouch, drops the strap, and adjusts the loop to standing height.

An essential part of any rescue plan

Extends the safe suspension window while the crew executes the rescue procedures required by OSHA 1926.502(d)(20).

Four-strap crew pack

One strap per worker across a typical crew, at a lower per-strap cost than singles.

A trauma strap is not a rescue plan. OSHA 1926.502(d)(20) requires prompt rescue of employees after a fall arrest. The trauma strap extends the safe suspension window; your crew still needs a written, rehearsed rescue procedure and the equipment to execute it.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 1926.502(d)(20)

Supports the requirement for prompt rescue by extending the time a suspended worker can safely wait.

ANSI Z359.2 practice

Fits within a managed fall protection program with documented rescue planning.

Harness compatibility

Designed for attachment to Guardian full body harnesses without altering harness certification.

Suspension trauma mitigation

Addresses orthostatic intolerance, which can cause loss of consciousness in as little as 15 minutes of suspension.

Typical Applications

Steel erectionSuspension relief where rescue access takes time to set up.
Wind and tower workLong vertical rescues make suspension time critical.
Bridge crewsSuspended workers may wait for rope-access rescue.
Solar installersResidential crews working from anchors and lifelines.
Plant maintenanceHarnessed workers above tanks, conveyors, and racks.
Confined space attendantsPart of the rescue plan for entrants in harnesses.

Attachment and Deployment Overview

Attachment and use must follow the Guardian trauma strap instruction manual (85283). The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Attach the pouch. Mount the trauma strap pouch to the harness per the instruction manual, positioned so the worker can reach it while suspended.
  2. Verify before work. Include the strap in the pre-use harness inspection; confirm the pouch is secure and the strap is packed correctly.
  3. After a fall: deploy. Open the pouch and release the strap while suspended.
  4. Form the loop. Connect and adjust the strap to create a standing loop at boot height.
  5. Stand and relieve. Step into the loop and stand up in the harness to relieve leg-strap pressure and restore circulation.
  6. Await rescue. Keep moving the legs and stay upright while the crew executes the rescue plan.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect each strap with the harness before every use, and have a competent person perform a documented inspection at least every six months under ANSI Z359.2 practice.

  • Webbing: cuts, fraying, abrasion, chemical damage, or UV degradation.
  • Stitching: broken, pulled, or abraded threads.
  • Hardware: cracks, corrosion, or deformation of the steel components.
  • Pouch: damaged closure or a strap that is not packed for clean deployment.
  • Labels: intact and legible.

Retirement triggers: any deployment in an actual fall event, any failed inspection item, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the strap is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is suspension trauma and why does it matter?
Suspension trauma, also called orthostatic intolerance, occurs when harness leg straps compress the veins of a suspended worker after a fall arrest. Blood pools in the legs, and the worker can lose consciousness in as little as 15 minutes. Standing up in a deployed trauma strap relieves the pressure and restores blood flow, extending the time available for rescue.
How many straps come in this pack?
This is a 4-pack of the Guardian 10733 Trauma Strap, one strap per worker for a typical crew. A trauma strap only protects the worker wearing it, so every harness on the job should carry one.
Which harnesses does the 10733 fit?
The 10733 is compatible with all Guardian full body harnesses, including the Velocity, Series 1, and Series 3, and it attaches without altering the harness certification.
How does the worker use the strap after a fall?
While suspended, the worker opens the low-profile pouch, deploys the strap, connects and adjusts it into a loop at boot height, then steps in and stands up in the harness to relieve leg pressure until rescue.
Does a trauma strap satisfy the OSHA rescue requirement?
No. OSHA 1926.502(d)(20) requires prompt rescue after a fall arrest. The strap extends the safe suspension window, but your crew still needs a written and rehearsed rescue plan with the equipment to execute it.
When should a trauma strap be replaced?
Replace the strap after any real fall deployment, after any failed inspection item such as cut webbing or damaged hardware, or whenever an inspector cannot verify it is fit for service. Practice deployments per the manual do not require retirement if the strap passes inspection afterward.
Does the strap get in the way during normal work?
No. The 10733 rides in a compact 5 in x 4.5 in pouch weighing about half a pound, positioned on the harness so it stays clear of tools, lanyards, and SRL connections until it is needed.
