H500 Arc Flash Harness with Back D-Ring

This is the fall-arrest-focused version of the Miller H500 Arc Flash platform: polyamide webbing certified to ASTM F887 for arc flash resistance up to 40 cal per square centimeter, a dielectric dorsal D-ring, dielectric quick connect buckles, and polyamide front webbing loops, without the side positioning rings of the H5AFC1S.

Certified to ANSI Z359.11-2021 and CSA Z259.10-2018 Class ALR and ALPR, and compliant with OSHA 1926.502, the H5AFC2S is rated for workers up to 420 lb per OSHA and CSA, and 310 lb per the ANSI marking.

S/M fits workers up to 5 ft 10 in and 170 lb, or up to 190 lb at 5 ft 6 in and under. Universal (L/XL) covers the broad middle and is the most popular size. XXL/XXXL fits workers over 6 ft who weigh over 270 lb, and any worker from 350 to 400 lb. Lighter boundary bands are overlap zones where either size fits: size down for a trim fit or up for room over layers. Some Miller spec sheets list these as Size 1 (S/M), Size 2 Universal (L/XL), and Size 3 (2XL and 3XL). Based on the manufacturer's published Miller sizing chart; verify fit per the user manual before first use.

Who Needs This Product

For electrical crews that need arc-rated fall arrest without positioning, the H5AFC2S drops the side rings and the price while keeping every protective element: the arc-rated polyamide webbing, the dielectric hardware, and the inspection-friendly indicators and stitching. Crews that also position on poles and structures should choose the H5AFC1S with side D-rings.

Features

ASTM F887 Arc Rating

Polyamide webbing is certified for arc flash resistance up to 40 cal per square centimeter, staying intact when exposed.

Dielectric Hardware

The back D-ring, torso adjuster, and quick connect buckles are all dielectric, removing conductive paths.

Polyamide Front Loops

Webbing loops at the chest replace metal hardware for frontal connections.

Dielectric Quick Connect Buckles

QC hardware clicks together in seconds with gloves on and releases only with a deliberate two-action press.

Dedicated SRL Web Link

A purpose-built web link at the dorsal position attaches personal SRLs cleanly.

Smart Impact Indicators

Clearly identifiable indicators and a visible stitch pattern make inspections fast and sure.

Both stocked sizes are selectable from the size options above. An S/M is made by the vendor; contact us for availability.

Arc rating is not a license to contact. The harness protects against arc flash exposure; it does not make contact with energized equipment safe. Follow your minimum approach distances and check the impact indicators before every use.

Compliance Standards

ASTM F887

The polyamide webbing is certified to ASTM F887 for arc flash resistance up to 40 cal per square centimeter.

ANSI Z359.11-2021

Certified to the current ANSI full body harness standard with a 310 lb rated capacity per the ANSI marking.

OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140

Meets OSHA requirements for personal fall arrest system body wear in both construction and general industry.

CSA Z259.10-2018 Class ALR and ALPR

Certified for Canadian use in fall arrest and positioning classes with a 420 lb capacity.

Typical Applications

Utility line work and substation maintenance at height.
Electrical construction inside the arc flash boundary.
Wind, solar, and battery plant electrical work with fall exposure.
Industrial electrical maintenance with US and Canadian certification needs.
Bucket truck and aerial lift electrical work with dorsal tie-off.
Any energized environment where steel hardware is a conductive hazard.

Donning Overview

  1. Hold the harness by the back D-ring and shake it out so the straps hang free without twists.
  2. Slip the shoulder straps on like a vest, keeping the webbing flat against the body.
  3. Connect the chest buckle and position the chest strap across the middle of the chest.
  4. Fasten each leg buckle so the strap allows a flat hand between the strap and the leg, but not a fist.
  5. Work through all five adjustment points until the dorsal D-ring rests between the shoulder blades, then stow the strap ends.

Full donning and adjustment instructions are in the Miller harness manual linked in the documentation section below.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect this harness before each use, and have a competent person other than the user formally inspect it at least annually per ANSI Z359.2. Check each point below and record the results on the inspection form linked in the documentation section.

  • Webbing: cuts, frays, burns, chemical damage, UV fading, or broken stitching anywhere on the harness.
  • Hardware: D-rings and buckles for cracks, corrosion, distortion, or sharp edges.
  • Adjusters and keepers: slippage, missing keepers, or strap ends that will not stay stowed.
  • Labels: present and legible, including the size, standards, and serial information.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event, any webbing or hardware defect found during inspection, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the harness is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 40 cal rating mean?
The polyamide webbing is certified to ASTM F887 for arc flash resistance up to 40 cal per square centimeter, which covers the exposure levels of most utility and industrial arc flash boundaries. Match the harness rating to your arc flash study.
Why are there two capacity ratings?
The ANSI Z359.11 marking is 310 lb, while OSHA and CSA Z259.10 rate the harness to 420 lb. Follow the standard your program is written against; under ANSI-based programs the limit is 310 lb including tools and clothing.
What is dielectric hardware?
The D-ring, buckles, and adjusters are non-conductive, so the harness does not create a path to ground or between phases if it contacts energized equipment. The front connection points are polyamide webbing loops instead of metal.
How is this different from the H5AFC1S?
The H5AFC1S adds dielectric side D-rings for work positioning. This H5AFC2S is the back-D-ring-only version for crews that need arc-rated fall arrest without positioning.
What do the impact indicators show?
The stitched indicators deploy visibly if the harness is loaded in a fall arrest. Any deployed indicator means the harness is done: remove it from service immediately, even if the webbing otherwise looks fine.
Is this harness CSA certified for Canada?
Yes. It is certified to CSA Z259.10-2018 in Class ALR and ALPR in addition to ANSI Z359.11-2021, OSHA 1926.502, and ASTM F887. Verify the markings on the label at receipt.
How often does the harness need to be inspected?
Inspect it before each use, and have a competent person inspect it at least annually per ANSI Z359.2. Retire the harness after any fall arrest event, any deployed impact indicator, or any failed inspection.
