Who Needs This Product

The SideWinder is for roofers, framers, and maintenance crews who want hands-free mobility off a fixed anchorage instead of managing rope. The casing anchors to a 5,000 lb rated point with the included twist lock carabiner, the cable pays out and retracts as the worker moves, and the brake locks within 24 inches of free fall over a wood edge. Specified uses are fall arrest with a maximum 24 inch free fall over wood edges, fall restraint, and horizontal lifeline systems. SideWinders are not approved for leading edge fall hazards or free falls over metal or concrete edges; SRL-LE models with a larger cable and external energy absorber cover that work.

Features

Stainless steel braking system

Corrosion resistant internal brake locks the drum and arrests a fall within 54 inches at a 900 lb average force.

Swivel snaphook with fall indicator

The B end snaphook swivels to fight cable twist and exposes a visual indicator after any arrest, sending the unit straight to factory service.

Impact resistant ABS casing

Rugged housing with a molded carry handle shrugs off jobsite handling, with casing screws and seams as listed inspection points.

Twist lock carabiner included

A No. 5001-Z steel twist lock carabiner ships in the box for the A end anchorage connection.

Two working lengths

The 20 ft 2904-K covers residential roofs and floors at 14 lb; the 50 ft 2901-K reaches across larger structures at 18 lb.

Serialized service labels

Label pack records serial number, service start date, and inspection dates so semi-annual competent person checks stay documented.

Not for leading edge fall hazards. The SideWinder is specified for a maximum 24 inch free fall over wood edges only; free falls over metal or concrete edges and leading edge exposures require an SRL-LE model per the 2023 manual. Any unit subjected to a fall, or that fails a function test or inspection, must be returned to the Super Anchor factory for service. Never open the casing: the recoil spring can cause serious injury.

Compliance Standards

Installation Overview

Connection figures, hazard warnings, and inspection tables are in the 2023 SideWinder manual linked below. The basics:

  1. Select an anchorage capable of 5,000 lb for fall arrest or 3,000 lb for fall restraint, or 2 times the intended load as engineered.
  2. Attach the casing A end to the anchorage with the included No. 5001-Z twist lock carabiner.
  3. Connect the B end swivel snaphook to the dorsal D-ring of a full body harness, or a side D-ring for fall restraint.
  4. Function test the lock: slowly deploy about 3 ft of cable, then jerk sharply; the brake must lock.
  5. Function test retraction: release the cable slowly and confirm it fully retracts into the casing.
  6. Keep the cable away from sharp or abrasive surfaces during work, and store the unit indoors hanging from the A end.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with documented semi-annual competent person inspections. Remove the SRL from service when any of the following apply:

  • The unit was subjected to a fall or the snaphook fall indicator is visible.
  • The cable is kinked, bent, gouged, cut, or corroded, or a swage or thimble is loose, damaged, or missing.
  • The cable fails the lock test or does not fully retract.
  • The casing is cracked, seams are separated, screws are missing, or the handle is broken.
  • The snaphook or carabiner gate will not close and lock.
  • PID labels are unreadable, the semi-annual inspection is overdue, or service life exceeds 5 years.

Tag units removed from service to prevent further use and return them to the factory for authorized service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 2904-K and the 2901-K?
Cable length and weight. The 2904-K carries 20 ft of cable at 14 lb and covers most residential roofs; the 2901-K carries 50 ft at 18 lb for larger structures. Both share the same casing, brake, connectors, and Class B rating.
Is the SideWinder rated for leading edge work?
No. The 2023 manual specifies a maximum 24 inch free fall over wood edges only and lists leading edge exposure as a non-specified use. Leading edge hazards, which include free falls over metal or concrete edges, require an SRL-LE model with a larger diameter cable and an external energy absorber.
What anchorage does the SideWinder require?
A point capable of supporting 5,000 lb for fall arrest or 3,000 lb for fall restraint, or 2 times the intended load. Attach the A end with the included No. 5001-Z steel twist lock carabiner to a tie-off strap, roof anchor, or other compliant anchorage.
How do I test the unit before each use?
Two function tests, to slowly deploy about 3 ft of cable and jerk sharply, which must lock the brake, then release slowly, allowing the cable to fully retract. Inspect the full cable length, snaphook, fall indicator, swages, casing, and labels before every shift.
What inspections does the SideWinder require?
Inspection and function tests before each use, plus a competent person inspection every 6 months recorded on the inspection label. Any unit subjected to a fall or failing a test returns to the Super Anchor factory; field repair is not authorized.
What is the service life?
It depends on the environment: 3 to 5 years for light indoor use, around 2 years for heavy indoor use, 1 to 2 years for heavy outdoor use, and about 1 year in salt air. Units past 5 years of service are removed regardless of condition.
Can I use the SideWinder for fall restraint?
Yes. Fall restraint is a specified use: connect the B end to the dorsal or side D-ring of the harness and rig so the worker cannot reach a free fall exposure. The anchorage minimum for restraint is 3,000 lb.
