Who Needs This Product

Restraint is the simplest fall protection there is: a lanyard short enough that the worker physically cannot reach the fall hazard. The 81533 gives crews a 3 ft rope restraint leash with a rebar hook on the anchorage end, ideal where the tie-off point is rebar, angle iron, or another compatible large-diameter member.

Features

Premium rope construction

Low-stretch 5/8 in 3-strand twisted polyester rope with 5,000 lb minimum static strength.

Rebar hook anchorage

Plated alloy steel rebar hook with a transverse load rated gate and 3,600 lb gate strength.

Snap hook harness end

Alloy steel snap hook connects to the harness D-ring.

Protected terminations

Steel thimbles and splice-protecting shrink tube guard the rope splices.

True restraint length

The fixed 3 ft length restricts the user from reaching identified fall hazards.

ANSI Z359.3-2019

Certified as a positioning and travel restraint lanyard; see DoC #C0312097.

Restraint only, not fall arrest. The 81533 is a restraint lanyard: it must be rigged so the worker cannot reach the fall hazard. It contains no energy absorber and must never be used where a free fall is possible. For fall arrest, use an energy absorbing lanyard or SRL.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.3-2019

Positioning and travel restraint standard covering the 81533 on FallTech DoC #C0312097.

OSHA 1926.502

Construction fall protection criteria, including travel restraint system provisions.

OSHA 1910.66 and 1910.140

General industry rules recognizing travel restraint on walking-working surfaces.

Transverse Gate Rating

The rebar hook gate carries a 3,600 lb rating, meeting ANSI Z359.12 connector requirements per FallTech product data.

Typical Applications

Roof edge workKeep workers back from unprotected edges.
Rebar and steelDirect connection to rebar mats and members.
Aerial liftsShort leash restraint inside the basket.
Leading edgesRestraint rigging where arrest clearance is short.
Inspection walksQuick tie-off for brief exposure tasks.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech restraint lanyard instruction manual (MRES01). The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Plan the geometry. Measure from the anchor to the hazard; the 3 ft lanyard plus your reach must not let you cross the edge.
  2. Connect the rebar hook. Close it on rebar or another compatible anchorage member of suitable strength; check the gate locks.
  3. Connect the snap hook. Attach to the harness D-ring appropriate for restraint per the harness manual.
  4. Keep the rope snug. Work with minimal slack so travel restraint stays true restraint.
  5. Inspect before each use. Rope, splices, thimbles, and both hooks.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent person inspection at least annually.

  • Rope: cuts, fraying, hard spots, glazing, and chemical or UV damage.
  • Splices: intact with shrink tube in place and thimbles seated.
  • Rebar hook: gate action, locking function, and no cracks or corrosion.
  • Snap hook: self-closing, self-locking, and free of deformation.
  • Labels: legible with serial and date recorded in the inspection log.

Retirement triggers: any loading event, damaged rope or splices, hook damage, or a failed inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between restraint and fall arrest?
Restraint prevents the fall from happening: the lanyard is short enough that you cannot reach the edge. Fall arrest catches you after a fall and requires an energy absorber and fall clearance. The 81533 is restraint only.
Why choose the rebar hook version over the 8153?
The 8153 carries snap hooks on both ends. The 81533 swaps the anchorage end for a rebar hook with a wide throat and a transverse load rated gate, so it closes directly around rebar and similar members without an extra anchorage connector.
What standard covers this lanyard?
ANSI Z359.3-2019, the positioning and travel restraint standard. FallTech DoC #C0312097 lists the 81533 by part number, and the document is linked in the submittals section.
Can I use it on a sloped roof?
Restraint on a slope requires a competent person to verify the geometry: the anchor position and 3 ft length must prevent you from reaching any edge in every direction of travel, including slide-back scenarios.
What anchorage strength do I need?
A restraint anchorage must resist at least 1,000 lb per attached worker under OSHA guidance, or twice the foreseeable force as determined by a qualified person. When in doubt, use a 5,000 lb rated anchor.
