Who Needs This Product

This product is a personal self-retracting device (SRL-P), the connecting component of a personal fall arrest system. A worker wears the SRD on the harness dorsal and the retractable web lifeline pays out and retracts, locking to arrest a fall. Class 1 devices anchor at or above the D-ring, away from edge exposure. You still need a certified full-body harness and a rated anchorage.

Features

Segment-leading lightweight design

At 3.4 lb, the 84709 reduces size and weight without sacrificing quality or durability.

Push-button dorsal connector

The unique aluminum dorsal connector offers a streamlined attachment with clear visual confirmation.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual (MSRD42). The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check the lifeline, retraction, lock, housing, dorsal connector, and hook before each use.
  2. Mount the SRD. Attach the aluminum dorsal connector to the harness dorsal D-ring until it clicks and shows engaged.
  3. Connect the lifeline. Attach the snap hook or rebar hook to a rated anchor at or above the D-ring.
  4. Check the lock. Pull the lifeline sharply to confirm it locks, then let it retract smoothly.
  5. Confirm clearance. Verify required fall clearance and swing-fall with the calculator below.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least annually. Remove the SRD from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Lifeline: cuts, fraying, burns, chemical damage.
  • Retraction and lock: a lifeline that will not retract or lock on a sharp pull.
  • Energy absorber: a deployed or torn tear-away cover.
  • Housing, dorsal connector, and hardware: cracks, deformation, or corrosion.
  • Connectors and hooks: bent gates, corrosion, or gates that will not lock.
  • Labels: illegible or missing markings.

Remove the SRD from service immediately after any fall-arrest event, and destroy retired equipment so it cannot return to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Class 1 mean for this SRL-P?
Under ANSI Z359.14-2021, Class 1 devices are certified for anchorage at or above the harness D-ring, away from edge exposure. The light green housing color denotes Class 1 certified performance.
What hook configurations are available?
Three configurations: a steel snap hook (84709SP1), a steel rebar hook (84709SP3), or an aluminum rebar hook (84709SP5). Choose in the options.
What is the capacity?
One worker from 130 to 310 lb for ANSI compliance, and from 130 to 420 lb under OSHA, including clothing, tools, and gear.
How much does it weigh?
The single-leg unit weighs 3.4 lb (1.6 kg) per the manual's specification table, which makes it one of the lightest 9 ft web SRL-Ps available.
How much clearance do I need?
The maximum arrest distance is 42 inches, and that is only one part of the Minimum Required Fall Clearance (MRFC). Fall clearance charts print inside the energy absorber cover, and our Fall Protection Calculator confirms the total.
Can I tie off at foot level with this device?
No. Class 1 devices anchor at or above the D-ring. When you need foot-level or leading-edge tie-off, use a Class 2 device such as the FT-X EdgeCore series.
Do I need the single-leg or twin-leg version?
Choose single-leg for general movement under one anchor. Choose the twin-leg 84709 version when you need 100 percent tie-off while moving between anchor points.

Specifying SRL-Ps for Your Crew?
