The LAC12 is a non-penetrating ladder safety dock that clamps to a parapet wall (or fixes to a flat roof) to hold an extension ladder secure at the roof edge. Two adjustable parapet clamps with rubber-padded jaws grip the wall without penetrating it. The 22-5/8-inch-wide black ASTM-rated steel platform holds the top of the ladder in place and provides the climber with a stable transition between the ladder and the roof. Retro-reflective tape on the platform face improves visibility and trips prevention. Rated for Type IA extension ladders up to 17-inch outer width and 300-pound load capacity. Meets OSHA 1926.1053(b)(1) for ladder securement. Out of the box, sets up in minutes with no tools.

How to Install the LAC12 in 7 Steps

The full procedure is in the LAC12 User Instruction Manual. The condensed version below assumes a parapet-wall install on a building where a Type IA extension ladder will be used for routine roof access.

  1. Inspect the dock and the ladder. Before each use, inspect the dock for cracked welds, bent steel, damaged clamp threads, missing rubber pads, or torn retro-reflective tape. Inspect the extension ladder for damaged rails or rungs and confirm it is a Type IA Extra Heavy Duty ladder rated for 300 pounds and no wider than 17 inches at the rails.
  2. Position the dock on the parapet wall. Place the dock on top of the parapet wall at the planned ladder access point. Verify the platform sits flat and overhangs the wall toward the work side. Confirm the parapet thickness is within the dock's clamp adjustment range.
  3. Engage the clamps. Turn the adjustment screws on each clamp until the rubber-padded jaws make full contact with both faces of the parapet wall. Hand-tighten until the dock will not move when pushed in any direction.
  4. Verify the dock is rigid. Push and pull on the dock platforms from multiple angles to confirm the clamps are fully engaged and the dock does not shift. Re-tighten any clamp that gives.
  5. Set the extension ladder. Place the top of the extension ladder against the dock platforms so both ladder rails rest on the steel platforms. Confirm the ladder angle complies with OSHA (4-to-1 rise-over-run, approximately 75 degrees) and the rails sit within the 17-inch maximum width.
  6. Confirm OSHA securement. OSHA 1926.1053(b)(1) requires the top of the ladder to be secured against displacement. The dock satisfies this requirement when the clamps are fully engaged and the ladder rails are seated on the platforms.
  7. Climb and access the roof. Maintain three points of contact at all times while climbing. Step from the top of the ladder onto the roof using the dock platforms only as visual reference (the platforms are labeled DO NOT STEP for a reason). Do not stand on the dock.

Inspection & Retirement

Ladder docks experience weather, ladder contact, and incidental impacts during installation and removal. Routine inspection catches problems before a ladder shifts under a worker.

Pre-Use Inspection (Every Use)

Before each use, inspect the dock for cracked welds, bent steel platforms or clamps, stripped or seized adjustment screws, missing or torn rubber pads on the clamp jaws, and torn or illegible retro-reflective tape. Verify the clamp threads turn smoothly and the jaws engage fully when tightened.

Competent Person Inspection (Minimum Every 6 Months)

A Competent Person, as defined in 29 CFR 1926.32(f), must perform and document a full inspection at least every six months. Inspection covers permanent deformation of any platform or clamp, weld integrity on the cast steel joints, screw thread condition under load, rubber pad bond to the clamp jaws, and any signs of unauthorized field modification.

Inspection After Impact

If the dock has been dropped from height, struck by a ladder or vehicle, or otherwise impacted, remove it from service until a Competent Person inspects and clears it. Even minor deformation of a clamp jaw can compromise the parapet grip.

Retirement for Damage

Retire any LAC12 with cracked welds, bent platforms that will not seat a ladder flat, stripped adjustment screws, broken or missing rubber pads, severe corrosion that has pitted the electrostatic paint to bare steel, or any deformation that prevents the clamp jaws from engaging the parapet wall on both faces.

Cleaning and Storage

After use, wipe the dock and clamps clean with mild soap and water. Dry before storage. Lubricate the adjustment screw threads lightly with a non-grease lubricant if they bind in cold weather. Store in a clean, indoor space away from corrosive chemicals when not deployed.

Securement Limits & Use Notes

The LAC12 secures the TOP of an extension ladder per OSHA 1926.1053(b)(1). The base of the ladder must still be placed on a stable, level surface at the proper 4-to-1 rise-over-run angle (approximately 75 degrees). The dock does not eliminate the need for proper ladder placement, three-points-of-contact climbing, or any other OSHA ladder safety requirement.

The LAC12 is rated for ladder securement only. For fall arrest at the roof edge, use a separately rated anchor and PFAS. To size a fall-arrest connector for workers at the roof level, use our Fall Protection Clearance Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the LAC12 a fall arrest anchor?
No. The LAC12 is a ladder securement dock. It holds the top of an extension ladder in place per OSHA 1926.1053(b)(1). It is not rated as a fall arrest anchor and must not be used as a tie-off point for a personal fall arrest system.
What ladders does the LAC12 fit?
Type IA Extension Ladders (Extra Heavy Duty / Special Duty per ANSI ladder duty rating) up to 17 inches in outer rail width and 300 pounds of working load. Most commercial-grade fiberglass and aluminum extension ladders fall within this range.
Does it actually work without drilling into the wall?
Yes. The dock uses two adjustable parapet clamps with rubber-padded jaws that grip the parapet wall on both faces. No drilling, no fasteners, no roof penetration. Set up in minutes, hand-tight.
What if my building has no parapet wall?
The dock includes pre-drilled mounting holes on its base for mechanical fixing to flat roof surfaces. Fasteners are not included for the flat-roof install. Verify the roof structure can support the dock and ladder load before fixing.
Does the dock damage the parapet wall finish?
The clamp jaws are fitted with rubber pads specifically to protect facade and finished wall surfaces. For especially delicate or painted finishes, add a soft cloth between the rubber pad and the wall as an extra layer of protection.
What OSHA standard does the LAC12 satisfy?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)(1): 'When portable ladders are used for access to an upper landing surface, the ladder side rails shall extend at least 3 feet above the upper landing surface. When such an extension is not possible because of the ladder's length, then the ladder shall be secured at its top to a rigid support that will not deflect.' The LAC12 is that rigid support.
How often should I inspect the dock?
Before each use, the user must inspect the dock for cracked welds, bent steel, clamp thread damage, missing rubber pads, and intact retro-reflective tape. A Competent Person must perform and document a full inspection at least every 6 months and after any impact, drop from height, or unusual loading.
