The Frontline VLP50 is a 50 ft premium vertical lifeline: high strength 5/8 in polysteel twisted rope with a stamped steel snaphook factory-spliced at the anchor end, ready to hang from an overhead anchor and run a rope grab.

The rope and termination carry a 5,000 lb minimum breaking strength with a 310 lb max capacity, built to ANSI Z359.11-2007 and A10.32-2004 and aligning with OSHA 1926 and 1910. Add a compatible rope grab (RGSS58) to complete the personal fall arrest connection.

Who Needs This Product

This product is a vertical lifeline - the rope a rope grab travels on for climbing and descending fall protection. Roofers, tower crews, and tank workers hang it from an overhead anchor and clip a rope grab to their harness. You still need a rated anchor, a compatible rope grab, and a full body harness to complete the system.

A lifeline is half a system. The vertical lifeline must be paired with a compatible rope grab and a rated overhead anchor, with enough clearance below for the grab to lock before the worker reaches a lower level. Run the calculator below, and protect the rope from sharp edges and cutting hazards.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.11-2007

American National Standard for full body harnesses and connecting components / vertical systems. The rope and termination are rated to this standard.

ANSI A10.32-2004

Fall protection requirements for construction and demolition operations.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926 / 1910

Federal construction and general industry fall protection criteria.

How to Use the VLP50

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check the full length of rope, the splice, and the snaphook before each use.
  2. Anchor it. Clip the snaphook to a rated overhead anchorage connector.
  3. Hang clear. Let the lifeline fall clear of edges and hazards to the work level.
  4. Install the rope grab. Mount a compatible 5/8 in rope grab per its manual.
  5. Verify clearance. Confirm fall clearance below before climbing - run the calculator below.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Rope: cuts, fraying, abrasion, burns, chemical damage, soft spots, or heavy soiling.
  • Snaphook / termination: deformation, cracks, corrosion, or a gate that fails to close and lock.
  • Rope grab (where fitted): cam wear, anti-panic function, and positive lock on a downward snap.
  • Shock pack (where fitted): deployment or torn cover.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Retire the lifeline immediately after any fall arrest event or if any inspection point fails. Destroy retired equipment so it cannot return to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What rope grab do I use?
Any rope grab rated for 5/8 in twisted rope - the Frontline RGSS58 self-tracking grab is the matched option.
What is the rated capacity?
One worker up to 310 lbs including clothing and tools.
Does it come with a rope grab?
No - the VLP50 is the lifeline only. The VLPR3L and VLP+RGSS58ES assemblies bundle a grab and shock pack if you want everything in one SKU.
How is it different from the VLP25?
The VLP25 is the 25 ft version of the same lifeline - half the drop, same rope and rating.
Which standards apply?
ANSI Z359.11-2007 and A10.32-2004, aligning with OSHA 1926 and 1910.
How do I protect the rope?
Keep it clear of sharp edges, hot work, and chemicals; inspect the full length before each use and retire it for any cut or soft spot.
What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Fall arrest catches a worker after a fall happens; fall restraint prevents the worker from reaching the fall hazard in the first place. For a deeper walkthrough with system examples, read our guide: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint. Use the Fall Protection Calculator below to size the right system for your job.
