How to Use the VLP50R3L-AM

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check rope, manual grab, shock lanyard, and snaphook before each use.
  2. Anchor the lifeline. Clip the top snaphook to a rated overhead anchorage connector.
  3. Set the rope grab. Position the manual grab on the rope, UP toward the anchor, above your work.
  4. Connect the shock lanyard. Attach to the dorsal D-ring of your harness.
  5. Function test and verify clearance. Confirm the grab locks; run the calculator below.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Rope: cuts, fraying, abrasion, burns, chemical damage, soft spots, or heavy soiling.
  • Snaphook / termination: deformation, cracks, corrosion, or a gate that fails to close and lock.
  • Rope grab (where fitted): cam wear, anti-panic function, and positive lock on a downward snap.
  • Shock pack (where fitted): deployment or torn cover.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Retire the lifeline immediately after any fall arrest event or if any inspection point fails. Destroy retired equipment so it cannot return to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the rope grab manual or automatic?
Manual - you position it by hand and slide it up as you climb. It locks on the rope in a fall.
What is the "American Style"?
A styling trim with American flag graphics matching the Combat American Style harness and lanyard line - not a Made-in-USA designation.
What is the shock lanyard for?
The 12 in shock absorbing lanyard between the grab and your harness limits the arrest force in a fall.
What length is it?
50 ft of 5/8 in polyester rope.
What standard does it meet?
ANSI Z359.15-2014; the test report is linked in Submittals.
What is the capacity?
One worker up to 310 lbs including clothing and tools.
What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Fall arrest catches a worker after a fall happens; fall restraint prevents the worker from reaching the fall hazard in the first place. For a deeper walkthrough with system examples, read our guide: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint. Use the Fall Protection Calculator below to size the right system for your job.
