The Malta Dynamics confined space winch is built for personnel riding, material handling, rescue, and evacuation. It carries 115 feet of galvanized steel cable rated for a worker load of 130 to 310 lb, and it raises, lowers, and locks a worker or load in place at a confined space opening.
The winch mounts to the Malta Dynamics Groundhog tripod and works with the 3-way recovery self-retracting lifeline bracket. Once installed, the cable feeds through the head of the tripod and rides on the built-in pulley wheel. A personal fall arrest system is then attached and used in conjunction with the winch so the crew has both controlled hoisting and backup fall protection.

- Inspect. Check the cable, drum, brake, and handle for damage and full function before each use.
- Mount. Attach the winch to the Malta Dynamics tripod at the mounting point shown in the manual.
- Route the cable. Feed the cable through the head of the tripod and onto the built-in pulley wheel.
- Connect. Attach the worker's personal fall arrest system and the winch line per the rescue plan.
- Test. Confirm the raise, lower, and lock functions before loading the entrant.
- Operate. Raise or lower within the rated capacity, keeping the backup fall arrest system attached throughout.
Inspection and Retirement
Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection on the schedule in the manual. Remove the winch from service for any of the conditions below.
- Cable: kinks, broken wires, birdcaging, corrosion, or flat spots.
- Brake and lock: failure to hold the load securely at any position.
- Drum and gears: binding, slipping, or unusual noise under load.
- Handle and housing: cracks, bending, or missing fasteners.
- Labels: must remain legible and intact.
Retirement triggers: any rescue or fall loading event, any brake that fails to hold, or any cable damage - remove the winch from service and replace per the manual.
