Who Needs This Product

Attendants and entry supervisors use a personnel winch to raise and lower workers through vertical portals when a mechanical lifting means is required. Paired with a tripod or davit and a backup fall arrest SRL, the winch handles controlled personnel lifting for planned entries, and it provides the mechanical advantage needed to retrieve an entrant without entering the space.

A winch is not fall protection by itself. OSHA requires an independent fall arrest system on the entrant whenever a personnel winch is raising or lowering a worker. Pair it with a 3-way SRL-R or backup SRL on the same tripod or davit.

Typical Applications

Deep entriesLowering entrants into deep manholes, wet wells, and lift stations.
Tank and vessel workControlled personnel raising and lowering during vessel entry.
Material supportMaterial handling support during maintenance when rated for the load.
Rescue backupMechanical retrieval capability for attendant-based non-entry rescue.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Mount the winch. Attach it to the tripod leg bracket or davit mast bracket and route the cable over the head sheave.
  2. Connect the systems. Attach the winch line to the entrant's harness and connect an independent fall arrest SRL as the backup system.
  3. Control the lift. Crank the handle to lower or raise the entrant at a controlled speed, keeping the line under tension at all times.
  4. Never lift alone. A personnel winch is never the sole fall protection. A separate fall arrest system is required during personnel lifting.
  5. Store properly. Retract the line fully and store the winch in its storage bag away from moisture and chemicals.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the winch before each use. A competent person must inspect it at least annually.

  • Cable: broken wires, kinks, corrosion, and even spooling on the drum.
  • Hook: gate and swivel operate freely; latch closes fully.
  • Brake: must hold a suspended load without creeping.
  • Handle and gears: smooth cranking in both directions with no binding.

Retirement triggers: any shock load on the winch, cable damage, brake slippage, or any condition the inspector cannot verify as safe for personnel service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this winch be used as the only fall protection during entry?
No. A personnel winch is a lifting and lowering device. OSHA requires an independent fall arrest system, typically an SRL-R mounted to the same tripod or davit, protecting the entrant whenever the winch is raising or lowering personnel.
What is the personnel capacity of the winch?
The rated capacity is 130 to 310 lb max. for personnel service. Keep the total load of worker, clothing, and tools inside that rating.
What lifeline options are available?
The winch comes with 60 ft of galvanized steel cable, 60 ft of stainless steel cable, 60 ft of Technora synthetic rope, or 120 ft of galvanized or stainless cable for deeper entries. Stainless suits corrosive wet wells, and Technora is the light-handling synthetic option.
How does the attendant control the entrant's speed?
The winch is hand-cranked through a gear reduction with an automatic brake. The entrant moves only when the attendant turns the handle, and the brake holds position the moment cranking stops.
Can I lift tools and materials with a personnel winch?
Use a dedicated materials winch for routine material handling. Keeping personnel and material lifting on separate devices prevents wear on the personnel line and keeps your rescue system ready.
What maintenance does the winch need?
Keep the cable clean and lightly lubricated per the manual, store it in the included storage bag, and have a competent person inspect it at least annually. Replace the cable at the first sign of broken wires or kinking.
Which brackets mount this winch to a tripod or davit?
FallTech tripods use the 7291A or 7291B leg bracket assembly depending on leg style, and confined space davits use the davit arm device receiver brackets. Match the bracket to your system before ordering.
