FallTech 8242 and C8242 6 ft WeldTech Single-Leg Energy-Absorbing Lanyard with Steel Snap Hooks
The FallTech WeldTech 8242 is a 6 ft single-leg energy-absorbing lanyard built for welding and hot-work. Kevlar leg webbing and a Nomex-covered Softpack energy absorber resist slag, spatter, and burns that would damage standard polyester. In a fall, the Softpack absorber deploys to keep arrest forces within safe limits. Choose your certification at checkout: the 8242 is certified to ANSI Z359.13-2013 for US jobsites, and the C8242 to CSA Z259.11-17 for Canada.
Alloy steel snap hooks connect at the harness and anchorage ends, each self-closing and self-locking with 3,600 lb gate strength. Rated for a worker up to 350 lb combined weight, with a 6 ft maximum free fall. Certified to ANSI Z359.13-2013 (model 8242) or CSA Z259.11-17 (model C8242), aligning with OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.66.

Who Needs This Product
This product is a welding-grade energy-absorbing lanyard (EAL), a fall-arrest connecting device built for hot-work. Welders, ironworkers, and fabricators use the WeldTech to tie off where sparks and spatter would burn through a standard lanyard. Pick the ANSI version (8242) for the US or the CSA version (C8242) for Canada. You still need a certified full-body harness and a rated anchorage to complete the personal fall-arrest system.
Features
Softpack energy absorber
A compact Softpack energy absorber with a Nomex cover deploys in a fall to keep arrest forces within limits.
Nomex and Kevlar construction
Kevlar leg webbing and a Nomex absorber cover resist slag, spatter, and burns in hot-work welding.
Spatter and burn resistant
Built for welding and hot-work where standard polyester webbing would be damaged.
Alloy steel snap hooks
Self-closing, self-locking alloy steel snap hooks connect at both the harness and anchorage ends.
Alloy steel connectors
Self-closing, self-locking alloy steel hooks with 3,600 lb gate strength.
Dual certified ANSI and CSA
Available ANSI Z359.13-2013 or CSA Z259.11-17, one lanyard for both sides of the border.
Confirm your fall clearance before every use. This lanyard allows up to 6 ft of free fall and the absorber can deploy up to 4.5 ft, so the minimum required fall clearance is about 18 ft below the work surface in an overhead configuration. Anchor overhead where possible, connect only to a certified full-body harness dorsal D-ring, and run the Fall Protection Calculator below before you rig.
Compliance Standards
ANSI Z359.13-2013
American National Standard for personal energy absorbers and lanyards (model 8242).
CSA Z259.11-17
Canadian standard for personal energy absorbers and lanyards (model C8242). Certified by the IAS-accredited FallTech test lab, TL-594.
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502
Federal construction fall protection requirements.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.66
General industry personal fall protection requirements.
Typical Applications
How to Use the 8242
Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.
- Inspect. Check the webbing, stitching, energy absorber, and all connectors before each use.
- Anchor. Connect one snap hook to a rated anchorage, positioned overhead where possible to limit free fall.
- Connect to the harness. Attach the harness connector to the dorsal D-ring of a certified full-body harness.
- Confirm the connections. Verify every hook gate is fully closed and locked.
- Verify clearance. Confirm fall clearance and swing-fall below the work surface, and run the calculator below.
Inspection and Retirement
Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at intervals set by your site conditions and at least annually. Pull the lanyard from service for any of the conditions below.
- Webbing: cuts, fraying, abrasion, burns, or chemical damage.
- Energy absorber: any sign of deployment, or a torn or damaged cover.
- Stitching: pulled, cut, or broken threads.
- Hooks: deformation, corrosion, or gates that fail to close and lock.
- Labels: illegible or missing markings.
Retire the lanyard immediately after any fall-arrest event, or if any inspection point fails. Destroy retired equipment so it cannot return to service.
