Who Needs This Product

Confined space teams that need a portable, quick-setup anchor point over a vertical portal choose a tripod as the most versatile option. One crew can carry it to the portal, set the leg height, and be ready to mount an SRL-R or winch in minutes, which makes tripods the standard for municipal, utility, and plant maintenance entries.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Position the tripod. Center the head over the portal and extend the legs to the working height, pinning each leg at the same setting.
  2. Set the safety chain. Install the leg safety chain around all three feet to prevent spreading.
  3. Mount your device. Attach the SRL-R or winch to the leg bracket and route the lifeline over the head sheave or pulley.
  4. Verify stability. Confirm the feet grip the surface and the head is level before anyone connects to the system.
  5. Operate per the manuals. Lower and raise entrants only with the devices mounted per the manufacturer's instructions.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the tripod before each use. A competent person other than the user must inspect it at least every six months, and after any fall arrest or rescue event, per the FallTech manual.

  • Legs: bends, cracks, dents, and full pin engagement at each height setting.
  • Head: sheaves turn freely; no cracks or deformation in the casting.
  • Feet: rubber pads and cleats intact and gripping.
  • Leg safety chain: present, adjusted, and undamaged.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event on the system, bent or cracked legs, or any condition the inspector cannot verify as safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What height range does the tripod cover?
The legs adjust from 5 to 8 ft in 6 inch increments, giving a 55 to 91 inch internal working height. At full extension the manual lists an 82 inch leg spread diameter inside the feet and a 41 inch entry hole diameter.
How fast can one crew set up this system?
Two workers can carry, position, and rig a FallTech tripod system in a few minutes. Extend the legs, pin them at the working height, set the leg safety chain, mount the device, and route the line over the head sheave.
Does the system meet OSHA confined space requirements?
Yes. It provides the anchor and retrieval capability that OSHA 1910.146 calls for in permit-required confined space entry, and the components meet OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.66. The manual rates the tripod at 310 lb for personnel including tools, and 620 lb for material handling with a designated material handling winch.
What surface conditions do the tripod feet handle?
The feet are designed to grip common surfaces including concrete, asphalt, and steel. Always verify footing before use and use the leg safety chain to prevent spreading.
Can I add a second device to the tripod?
Yes. FallTech tripods accept multiple leg bracket assemblies, so a common configuration pairs a personnel winch for lifting with a 3-way SRL-R for backup fall arrest and rescue.
What storage is included?
The system includes weather-resistant storage bags that protect the tripod and devices in the truck and in the shop between entries.
