RPG081SLE Leading Edge Cable Single Leg 8 ft SRL, Snap Hook

The Frontline RPG081SLE is an 8 ft leading edge cable SRL: galvanized steel cable lifeline, quick-action braking, and a backpack style energy absorber at the harness end - rated for both leading edge and non-leading edge applications.

The lifeline exits the side of the compact thermoplastic housing through a rubber TPV ergonomic handle, terminating in steel snap hook with 3,600 lb connector strength. Stainless and non-corrosive components throughout, 310 lb max user capacity, built to ANSI Z359.14-2021 and aligning with OSHA 1926 Subpart M and 1910.

Who Needs This Product

This product is a leading edge rated self-retracting lifeline - built for tie-off at foot level where a fall can load the lifeline over an edge. Deck installers, formwork crews, and steel erectors get hands-free protection with minimal fall distance. You still need a full body harness and a rated anchor to complete the system.

Features

Leading edge rated

Cable lifeline and absorber engineered for over-the-edge loading at foot-level tie-off.

Quick-action braking

The brake grabs in inches, cutting free fall and clearance demand.

Backpack absorber

The energy absorber rides at the harness, not at the anchor - correct for LE applications.

TPV side exit handle

The lifeline exits through an ergonomic rubber handle that protects the cable at the housing.

Compact housing

6.46 x 8.86 x 2.36 in of thermoplastic toughness.

Snap hooks

Steel double-action snap hooks for D-ring and anchor connections.

Leading edge changes the math. Foot-level tie-off means more free fall, cable loading over an edge, and bigger clearance numbers than overhead anchorage - the backpack absorber and LE-rated cable exist for exactly this. Run the calculator below with your real anchor height, and rig per the Frontline manual.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.14-2021

American National Standard for self-retracting devices, including leading edge (SRL-LE) requirements. Third-party test report linked in Submittals.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M

Federal construction fall protection requirements.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910

General industry personal fall protection requirements.

Typical Applications

How to Use the RPG081SLE

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check cable, braking, housing, absorber, and hooks before each use - including a sharp-pull lock test.
  2. Connect to the harness. Attach the backpack absorber end to the dorsal D-ring.
  3. Anchor. Connect the hook to a rated anchor - foot-level is approved for LE work.
  4. Mind the edge. Keep the cable path clear of unprotected sharp edges not part of the LE rating.
  5. Verify clearance. Run the calculator below with foot-level anchor numbers before work begins.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Lifeline cable: broken wires, kinks, birdcaging, corrosion, or extraction roughness.
  • Braking: lifeline must lock sharply on a quick pull test.
  • Housing: cracks, loose fasteners, or damaged lifeline exit handle.
  • Energy absorber: deployment or torn cover.
  • Hooks and swivels: deformation, corrosion, gates that fail to lock.

Retire the equipment immediately after any fall arrest event or if any inspection point fails. Destroy retired equipment so it cannot return to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes an SRL leading edge rated?
The cable lifeline and energy management are tested for falls that load the line over an edge at foot level - ANSI Z359.14-2021 SRL-LE requirements. A standard SRL is not rated for that.
Can I tie off at my feet?
Yes - for LE-rated devices like this one, foot-level anchorage is approved per the manual. Clearance requirements grow; run the numbers.
Why is the absorber at the harness?
In an over-the-edge fall the cable may be loaded across the edge; a backpack absorber at the harness still deploys correctly.
Single or twin?
Pick the twin (RPG082 series) when you transition between anchors and need 100 percent tie-off; the single leg is lighter for fixed-position work.
What is the capacity?
One worker up to 310 lbs including clothing and tools.
Has it been independently tested?
Yes - the test report covering the RPG08x LE family (all four models listed by style number) is linked in Submittals.
What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Fall arrest catches a worker after a fall happens; fall restraint prevents the worker from reaching the fall hazard in the first place. For a deeper walkthrough with system examples, read our guide: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint. Use the Fall Protection Calculator below to size the right system for your job.
