How to Set Up the RPGLE in 7 Steps
The full procedure is in the Frontline Leading-Edge SRL User Manual. The condensed version below assumes a trained user setting up at a planned leading-edge work zone with a documented rescue plan.
- Inspect the SRL. Before each use, inspect the SRL casing for cracks, the anchorage eye and carabiner for damage, the cable along its retracted and pulled-out length for cuts, fraying, or kinks, the external shock pack for tears or activation marks, and the snap hook for damage and impact indicator condition. Retire immediately if the impact indicator has tripped.
- Verify the SRL is Class 2. Confirm the unit is rated ANSI Z359.14-2021 Class 2 for the leading edge application planned. The RPGLE rating is printed on the housing label. Do not use a Class 1 SRL at a foot-level tie-off.
- Set the anchorage. Connect the self-locking carabiner at the SRL anchorage eye to an overhead or foot-level anchor rated at least 5,000 lb per ANSI Z359.18. For leading-edge use, the anchor sits at or below the worker's dorsal D-ring.
- Inspect the harness. Don a compatible ANSI Z359.11 full-body harness with a dorsal D-ring. Verify the harness fit per its manufacturer's procedure. Check the harness fall indicator.
- Connect the snap hook to the dorsal D-ring. Connect the SRL snap hook to the harness back D-ring. Verify the gate closes and locks fully, the snap hook swivel is free, and the impact indicator reads normal.
- Calculate fall clearance. Required fall clearance from the dorsal D-ring to the ground or next-lower level depends on the maximum arrest distance (42 in for Class 2 RPGLE), worker height, harness elongation, and any swing fall potential. Use the Frontline Fall Protection Clearance Calculator before stepping out toward the edge.
- Confirm rescue plan. Pre-plan rescue with the user, attendant, and a Competent Person before work starts. A self-rescue plan must be in place per OSHA 1926.502(d)(20). Never use this SRL without a rescue plan.
Inspection & Retirement
Leading-edge SRLs take sharp-edge contact and weather exposure every shift. Pre-use inspection and periodic Competent Person inspection keep the unit field-ready and protect the user.
Pre-Use Inspection (Every Use)
Before each use, inspect the SRL housing for cracks, deformation, or impact damage. Verify the anchorage eye and self-locking carabiner function smoothly. Pull the cable fully out of the housing and inspect along its entire length for cuts, fraying, kinks, broken strands, melting, or chemical damage. Inspect the external shock pack for tears, deployment, or activation marks. Verify the snap hook gate closes and locks fully, the swivel turns freely, and the impact indicator reads normal. Retire the SRL immediately if the indicator has tripped.
Competent Person Inspection (Minimum Every 12 Months)
A Competent Person, as defined in 29 CFR 1926.32(f), must perform and document a full inspection at least every twelve months per ANSI Z359.14. The inspection covers everything in the pre-use list plus housing seal integrity, drum spring tension, brake function via controlled cable extraction, shock pack visual integrity, snap hook gate spring fatigue, and any signs of unauthorized field modification.
Inspection After Fall Arrest
Any SRL that has arrested a fall must be removed from service permanently. The impact indicator on the snap hook will display a visible change. Retire the unit and replace.
Retirement for Damage
Retire any RPGLE for: cracked or impact-damaged housing, cable fraying or broken strands, melted or chemical-damaged cable jacket, torn or deployed shock pack, damaged snap hook or anchorage carabiner, tripped fall-arrest impact indicator, or any deformation visible to the naked eye.
Cleaning and Storage
Wipe the SRL housing, cable, snap hook, and carabiner with a damp cloth and mild soap. Air-dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not submerge the SRL in water. Do not lubricate the drum or brake. Store in a clean, room-temperature space away from sunlight, solvents, and chemicals.
Fall Clearance & Use Limits
The RPGLE arrests a fall within a maximum of 42 inches (Class 2). Required fall clearance from the dorsal D-ring to the ground or next-lower level depends on this arrest distance, the worker's height, harness elongation, and any swing fall potential. Always calculate required fall clearance BEFORE stepping out toward the leading edge. Re-calculate when the anchor location or work zone changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the RPGLE and the RPGCLE?
Both are 25-foot to 50-foot Leading Edge cable single-leg SRLs from Frontline rated ANSI Z359.14-2021 Class 2. The RPGLE has the swivel eye anchorage and swivel steel snap hook. The RPGCLE adds a carry handle on the housing and a tagline for hauling the snap hook up to the worker after first use. Pick the RPGCLE if you're working at height repeatedly and need the carry handle convenience.
What does Class 2 mean for an SRL?
ANSI Z359.14-2021 Class 2 is the certification level for Leading Edge SRLs that can be used at foot-level tie-offs where the SRL anchorage is at or below the user's dorsal D-ring. The SRL must arrest a fall over a sharp edge without the cable cutting. Maximum arrest distance for Class 2 is 42 inches (vs. 24 inches for Class 1 overhead use).
Can I use the RPGLE overhead (non-leading-edge)?
Yes. The RPGLE works at both leading-edge (foot-level) and standard overhead anchorage configurations. One SRL covers both use cases, which is the convenience advantage over Class-1-only SRLs.
What's the maximum user weight?
310 lb maximum, including the worker plus all clothing, tools, and equipment carried. This is the standard ANSI Z359.14 maximum user weight.
What is the cable made of?
7/32-inch (0.219 inch) galvanized steel wire rope with a minimum breaking strength of 3,400 lb. The galvanized coating resists corrosion in outdoor jobsite use.
Has the RPGLE been independently tested?
Yes. The complete SRL is independently tested by a 3rd-party laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Test report is available below. The unit ships with a fall-arrest impact indicator on the snap hook so the user can verify if the SRL has ever arrested a fall and must be retired.
How often must the RPGLE be inspected?
Inspect before each use for cable damage, casing cracks, shock pack tears or activation marks, snap hook function, and impact indicator condition. A Competent Person must perform a documented inspection at least every 12 months per ANSI Z359.14 and after any fall arrest. Retire the SRL immediately after any fall arrest or if the impact indicator has tripped.
