The Frontline RPG603W MEGApod 60-foot 3-Way Self-Retractable Lifeline is the convenient and complete solution for descent, ascent, and rescue retrieval in confined space, PLUS active fall protection during work. A single locking side knob switches the device between fall arrest mode (Class 1 SRL at the dorsal D-ring) and Winch mode (hand-cranked hoist for retrieval or lifting), so one tool covers entry, the working shift, and emergency extraction without changing equipment on the tripod.

Why dual-mode matters. A winch alone (like the RUW60) lowers and lifts the worker but does nothing during a fall. A standalone SRL arrests a fall but cannot retrieve the worker out of the hole. The RPG603W combines both inside one polymer-cased block: pull the locking pin on the side of the casing, and the same 60-foot galvanized cable that was holding a Class 1 fall arrest now becomes a hand-cranked retrieval winch. One mount, one cable, one piece of inventory.

Lab-tested seal. Intertek Report 105874305CRT-001 (July 15, 2024) certified the RPG603W to ANSI/ASSP Z359.14-2021 across General Requirements, Markings and Instructions, Static Strength (3,000 lbf for 1 minute), Dynamic Performance (ambient, 310 lb test weight, 36 in. free fall), and Energy Capacity. All three samples passed with average arrest forces of 706 to 808 lbf and worst-case arrest distance of 14 in., well below the 1,800 lbf and 42 in. Class 1 and 2 limits.

Features

Switchable Dual-Mode Operation

Locking pin on the side of the casing toggles between Fall Arrest (SRL) and Winch (retrieval) modes. One device covers entry, work, and rescue, replacing a separate SRL plus a separate winch on the tripod.

60 ft of 3/16 in. Galvanized Steel Cable

7x19 galvanized steel wire rope, 3/16 in. diameter, 60 ft (18.28 m) usable length. Minimum breaking strength 3,400 lbs. Same cable serves arrest and hoist functions.

Side-Knob Mode Switch with Locking Pin

The locking pin at the base of the handle side keeps the device locked in fall arrest mode during work. Pulling the pin transitions the block to winch mode, where the clockwise handle rotation retrieves or lowers the worker.

Swiveling Steel Snap Hook with Load Indicator

Self-locking steel snap hook at the cable end swivels under load to prevent rollout, and the integral load indicator flips red after a fall has been arrested so the device is pulled from service before re-use.

Swivel Anchorage Eye

Swiveling anchorage eye at the top of the housing accepts a self-locking carabiner for direct overhead anchorage and prevents cable twist during hoist cycles.

Inbuilt Shock Absorption

Internal rotary brake limits maximum arrest force to under 1,800 lbf (measured 1,075 to 1,128 lbf at 310 lb / 36 in. free fall per Intertek test) and stops the fall in 14 inches or less, with no external shock pack required.

MEGApod-Ready with TACBU Bracket

Engineered to mount on a Frontline MEGApod tripod leg (TAN07 7-ft or TAN10 10-ft) using the specialized TACBU mounting bracket. Two lynch pins lock the base plate, one cotter pin secures the upper plate, one locking pin captures the block.

Polymer Casing with HYDRO-Seepage Drain

Plastic block casing (10.98 in. x 11.96 in. x 3.77 in.) with the Frontline HYDRO-Seepage system: an opposite-side rubber knob rotates open to drain any water that seeps in through the cable port, so internal components stay dry between shifts.

One Device Replaces Two on the Tripod

The RPG603W eliminates the need to mount a winch on one tripod leg and an SRL above the head. Reduces tripod clutter, simplifies pre-use inspection, and cuts the bag list for confined-space crews working manholes, vaults, and tanks.

Aluminum Guide and Steel Handle

Aluminum cable guide tube directs the wire rope cleanly out of the block under tension or hand-crank, paired with a steel hoist handle sized for gloved use during retrieval.

SRL Mode vs. Winch Mode: When to Use Which

Scenario RPG603W Mode What it does Why one device beats buying both separately
Worker is descending into the vault, manhole, or tank Winch (locking pin OUT) Hand-crank the handle counter-clockwise to lower the worker on the 60 ft galvanized cable in a controlled descent. Replaces a dedicated RUW60-style winch for the entry phase.
Worker is performing the task at depth SRL (locking pin IN) The cable retracts under light tension and locks the centrifugal brake on a fall. Stops the fall in 13 to 14 in. at 310 lb (Intertek tested). A winch-only setup leaves the worker with no active fall protection during work, a gap the RPG603W closes.
Worker has fallen and is hanging Switch from SRL to Winch Pull the locking pin on the side, rotate the handle clockwise to lift the worker out of the hole. The mode change is one hand motion. No need to swap hardware on the tripod head mid-rescue, the cable stays attached to the dorsal D-ring throughout.
Worker is being lifted out at end of shift Winch (locking pin OUT) Clockwise crank lifts the worker on the same 60 ft cable, with the snap hook still on the dorsal D-ring. One unit handles the planned exit AND the unplanned rescue.
Buying SRL + winch separately n/a Two casings, two mounts, two cables, two pre-use inspections, two service intervals. The RPG603W consolidates all of that into one block on one MEGApod leg.

Applications

Manhole Rescue

Municipal sewer and stormwater manhole entries where the worker descends 20 to 60 ft and must have both active arrest and retrieval available without re-rigging.

Vault Entry

Electrical vault and telecom underground vault entries where the cover opening sits below the tripod; the RPG603W lowers the entrant on cable and arrests any fall during the work.

Tank Entry

Process tank and storage tank confined-space entries up to a 60-ft cable length. Polymer casing and galvanized-cable handle for washdown environments.

Refinery and Utility Confined Space

Refinery, chemical plant, and utility crews working tower bases, sumps, and pits where one device on the tripod must cover entry, dwell time, and emergency extraction.

Multi-Shift Retrieval Cycles

Operations where the worker is lowered, performs the task, and is lifted out repeatedly across a shift. The HYDRO-Seepage drain keeps the brake dry across wash and rinse intervals.

Rescue Pre-Stage

Crews that need to pre-stage a single rescue-capable device above the entry, ready for both planned exit and unplanned arrest, rather than rotating between a winch and an SRL.

How to Mount the RPG603W on the MEGApod and Switch Modes in 7 Steps

  1. Install the TACBU base bracket on the tripod leg. Place the lower mounting bracket on the MEGApod leg that has the head pulley directly above it. Lock the base with the two supplied lynch pins.
  2. Fix the upper bracket onto the base plate. Set the upper mounting bracket on the base, drive the pin through, and lock the assembly with the cotter pin.
  3. Seat the RPG603W in the bracket. Install the RPG603W on the mounting bracket by inserting the SRL's guided pulley into the bracket's recess. The block should sit flush against the bracket face.
  4. Lock the device with the locking pin. Insert the locking pin into the bracket bushing and tighten it fully so the SRL housing cannot shift during use.
  5. Route the cable over the head pulley. Reel out the lifeline, pass it over the pulley at the head of the MEGApod tripod, and hold the wire in place with the holding pin until the worker is connected.
  6. Connect the snap hook to the dorsal D-ring (SRL mode). With the side locking pin engaged in the fall arrest position, clip the swiveling snap hook to the dorsal D-ring of the worker's full-body harness. The RPG603W is now actively arresting any fall in the confined space.
  7. Switch to Winch mode for descent, ascent, or rescue. Pull the locking pin on the bottom of the handle side of the block to release the SRL function. Rotate the handle clockwise to lift or counter-clockwise to lower. Reinsert the pin to lock back into fall-arrest mode.

Inspection, Cleaning, and Retirement

Pre-Use Inspection (every shift, by the user)

  1. Check the load indicator on the swivel snap hook. Green band visible means the device has not been fall-arrested. A red band means remove from service immediately.
  2. Inspect the polymer casing for distortion, cracks, or impact damage. Confirm housing screws are present and not bent or loose.
  3. Test the swivel eye at the anchorage end; it should rotate freely with no binding.
  4. Extend the full 60 ft of cable. Check the wire rope hand-over-hand for kinks, broken wires, bird-caging, corrosion, weld splatter, chemical damage, or excessive abrasion. Inspect the thimble and swage on the cable end.
  5. Let the cable retract under spring tension; confirm it pays back into the housing fully and smoothly.
  6. Pull the cable sharply to confirm the SRL locking function engages.
  7. Operate the locking side pin to confirm it moves cleanly between SRL and Winch modes, then confirm the handle rotates in both directions in Winch mode.
  8. Verify the product label is legible. Record the inspection in the log section of the user manual.

Competent Person Inspection (every six months, more often in heavy or harsh use)

A qualified or competent person (as defined by OSHA) must perform a documented inspection at least once every six months. In heavy use, corrosive environments, or after exposure to chemicals or high heat, the frequency must be increased. Inspection results are recorded in the Inspection and Maintenance Log in the back of the Frontline SRL User Manual.

Retirement Criteria (remove from service immediately)

  • The load indicator on the snap hook shows red.
  • The cable shows kinks, broken wires, bird-caging, fused wires from weld splatter, or chemical damage.
  • The casing is cracked, deformed, or has been struck.
  • The locking pin does not engage, or the SRL does not lock on a sharp pull.
  • The hoist handle binds or skips, or the winch will not hold a load.
  • The device has been subjected to the forces of arresting a fall or performing a rescue, regardless of visible condition.
  • Product labels are illegible.

Cleaning and Storage

Wipe the device with a clean, dry cloth. If soiled, clean with mild soap and water, rinse, wipe, and hang to dry naturally. Never lubricate the device. Store the RPG603W in a cool, dry, clean environment away from direct sunlight, chemical vapors, heat, excessive moisture, and oil. If water has seeped into the casing through the cable port, rotate and pull the rubber HYDRO-Seepage knob on the opposite side to drain it, then re-seat the knob before storage. Only the manufacturer or a Frontline-authorized service center may repair the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the RPG603W different from the Frontline RUW60 confined-space winch?
The RUW60 is a winch-only device, it raises and lowers the worker but it does not arrest a fall. The RPG603W is a dual-mode unit, it runs as a Class 1 self-retracting lifeline during work (active fall arrest at the dorsal D-ring) and switches to winch mode for retrieval by pulling the locking side pin. One device replaces a separate winch plus SRL on the same MEGApod tripod.
How does the locking pin switch between SRL and Winch modes?
The locking pin sits on the side of the casing at the base of the handle. With the pin engaged, the unit operates as a self-retracting lifeline, the cable pays out under light tension and the centrifugal brake locks on a fall. To shift into Winch mode, pull the pin out and rotate the handle clockwise to lift or descend. The mode change takes a single hand motion and is documented in Section 26 and 27 of the Frontline SRL User Manual.
What is the tested maximum arrest force and arrest distance for the RPG603W?
Per Intertek Report 105874305CRT-001 to ANSI/ASSP Z359.14-2021, with a 310 lb test weight and a 36 in. free fall the RPG603W produced a maximum arrest force of 1,075 to 1,128 lbf (below the 1,800 lbf Class 1 and 2 limit) and an arrest distance of 13 to 14 in. (below the 42 in. limit). All three samples passed Static Strength (3,000 lbf for 1 minute), Dynamic Performance (ambient), and Energy Capacity testing.
Can the RPG603W be used as a stand-alone overhead SRL without the MEGApod?
Yes. The RPG603W has a swiveling anchorage eye at the top and can be connected with a self-locking carabiner to any overhead anchor rated for at least 5,000 lbs per OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.66, with the swivel snap hook at the cable end clipped to the worker's dorsal D-ring. The MEGApod tripod with the TACBU bracket is the standard mounting configuration for confined space, but the device is not limited to tripod use.
What cable does the RPG603W use, and how long does it pay out?
The RPG603W is built on 60 ft (18.28 m) of 3/16 in. diameter 7x19 galvanized steel wire rope with a minimum breaking strength of 3,400 lbs. The same cable serves both modes, the SRL retractor for fall arrest and the integral hoist winch for descent, ascent, and rescue retrieval.
What capacity range and worker weight does the RPG603W cover?
The RPG603W is rated for a single user from 130 to 310 lbs combined weight (worker plus clothing, boots, tools, and PPE) per ANSI Z359.14 and OSHA 420. The 310 lb capacity matches the test weight used in the Intertek dynamic performance trial, which gave a worst-case arrest distance of 14 in. and maximum arrest force of 1,128 lbf.
Which standards and OSHA references does the RPG603W satisfy?
The RPG603W is certified to ANSI/ASSP Z359.14-2014 (and re-tested to the 2021 revision per Intertek Report 105874305CRT-001) as a Class 1 self-retracting device. It meets OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (general industry, including 1910.146 confined spaces) and OSHA 29 CFR 1926 (construction, including 1926.502 personal fall arrest), and it is consistent with the rescue retrieval system requirements referenced in ANSI Z359.4 and Z359.18.
