External Shock Absorbing Lanyard with Steel Snap Hooks, 2-Pack
The Guardian external shock absorbing lanyard is the straightforward connecting device for personal fall arrest: polyester webbing with an external energy absorber that deploys up to 48 in to limit arrest forces, finished with locking steel snap hooks on both ends. Choose the 3 ft length (01214) for tight clearances or the 6 ft length (01220) for standard tie-off, each sold as a 2-pack.
Both lengths are certified to ANSI Z359.13 and meet OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140, supporting workers from 130 to 310 lbs including tools. Connect the shock absorber end to the dorsal D-ring of a full body harness and the free end to a compliant anchorage.

Who Needs This Product
A shock absorbing lanyard is the simplest connecting device in fall protection: one end to the harness, one end to the anchor, no retraction mechanism to maintain. This 2-pack keeps a spare on the truck or outfits two workers at once. Choose the 3 ft version when working close to the anchor with limited fall clearance below, and the 6 ft version for standard mobility. If your work area has less clearance than a deployed lanyard requires, use a self-retracting lifeline instead, and run the numbers in the fall clearance calculator below.
Features
External energy absorber
The tearing shock pack deploys up to 48 in during arrest, limiting the forces transmitted to the worker and the anchorage.
Locking steel snap hooks
Self-closing, self-locking hooks on both ends resist rollout and connect to dorsal D-rings and compliant anchors.
Two length options
3 ft (01214) for restricted clearance close to the anchor; 6 ft (01220) for standard reach and mobility.
Durable webbing construction
Polyester and nylon webbing with galvanized steel hardware stands up to daily jobsite use.
Restraint capable
May also be used in restraint applications to keep workers from reaching the leading edge, accounting for full lanyard length.
Two-lanyard pack
Outfits a pair of workers or keeps a fresh spare in the gang box, at a lower per-lanyard cost than singles.

Account for deployment in your clearance. Maximum free fall is 6 ft, and the shock pack can deploy up to 48 in during arrest. Total fall distance includes lanyard length, deployment, harness stretch, and worker height. The anchorage must withstand 5,000 lbs or maintain a 2:1 safety factor. Never work with the harness D-ring above the anchor unless the application specifically permits it.
Compliance Standards
ANSI Z359.13
Certified energy absorbing lanyard tested to the ANSI standard for lanyards and energy absorbers.
OSHA 1926.502
Meets construction personal fall arrest system requirements, including the 1,800 lbs maximum arresting force limit.
OSHA 1910.140
Meets general industry personal fall protection system requirements.
ISO 17025 lab tested
Tested in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory; the test report is available in the documentation section below.
Typical Applications
Use Overview
Use must follow the Guardian external shock lanyard instruction manual (85045). The sequence below is an overview only.
- Inspect first. Check webbing, stitching, shock pack, and hooks before every use.
- Connect the absorber end. Attach the shock absorber end of the lanyard to the dorsal D-ring of the full body harness.
- Connect the anchor end. Attach the free end to a compliant anchorage connector rated 5,000 lbs or engineered with a 2:1 safety factor.
- Verify the gates. Confirm both snap hooks are fully closed and locked, with no side loading.
- Check clearance. Verify fall clearance below the work surface including free fall, 48 in deployment, and harness stretch.
- Limit free fall. Position the anchor to keep free fall at 6 ft or less and minimize swing fall hazards.
Inspection and Retirement
Inspect before every use, and have a competent person perform a documented inspection at least every six months under ANSI Z359.2 practice. Remove a lanyard from service for any of the conditions below.
- Webbing: cuts, fraying, abrasion, burns, chemical damage, or UV fading.
- Stitching: broken, pulled, or abraded threads.
- Shock pack: any deployment, torn cover, or exposed tearing element.
- Hooks: cracks, corrosion, deformation, or gates that do not close and lock automatically.
- Labels: missing or illegible.
Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event, any shock pack deployment, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the lanyard is fit for service.
