Razorback Elite Maxx Sternal D-Ring Harness

The Malta Dynamics Razorback Elite Maxx Sternal D-Ring Harness takes the lightweight Razorback Elite platform and adds a sewn-in waist belt and enhanced padding for extra comfort and support. It is designed for tower work and fixed-ladder climbing, with a front (sternal) D-Ring for climbing, a dorsal (back) D-Ring for self-retracting lifelines, and two side D-Rings for hands-free positioning.

All-aluminum hardware keeps the Maxx lightweight despite the added belt, while breathable, reflective padding on the shoulders and legs and reflective stitching throughout the webbing add comfort and visibility. Quick-connect buckles, break-away lanyard keepers, and built-in rescue handles round out the feature set. It is rated for a 130 to 310 lb worker capacity and meets ANSI Z359.11-2021 and OSHA 1926 Subpart M and 1910.

Who Needs This Harness

The Razorback Elite Maxx is a Class 3 full body harness with a sewn-in waist belt - the wearable part of a personal fall arrest, climbing, or work positioning system. The sternal (front) D-Ring supports climbing, the dorsal (back) D-Ring is the fall-arrest connection for a self-retracting lifeline or shock-absorbing lanyard, and the side D-Rings are for hands-free positioning only. The added belt and padding suit crews who want extra support during long shifts. Match the size to the worker and confirm fall clearance below the work surface before tying off.

Features

Sewn-in waist belt

A sewn-in waist belt adds support and a stable platform for the side D-Rings during work positioning.

Enhanced comfort padding

Breathable, reflective padding on the shoulders and legs, plus belt padding, eases long days at height.

Front, back, and side D-Rings

A sternal D-Ring for climbing, a dorsal D-Ring for fall arrest, and two side D-Rings for positioning cover tower and ladder work.

Lightweight aluminum hardware

All-aluminum hardware keeps the belted Maxx light at 4.7 to 5.2 lb across sizes.

Built-in rescue handles

Shoulder rescue handles assist lifting or lowering and help keep the worker upright during rescue.

Quick-connect and break-away keepers

Quick-connect buckles speed up donning, while break-away lanyard keepers stow connector legs and release when needed.

Use each D-Ring for its rated purpose. The dorsal D-Ring is for fall arrest; the sternal D-Ring is for climbing and ladder systems; the side D-Rings and waist belt are for work positioning only - never for fall arrest. Size the harness to the worker, adjust every strap snug, inspect before each use, and retire any harness that has arrested a fall. Confirm fall clearance below the work surface before connecting.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.11-2021

ANSI/ASSP standard for full body harnesses. The Declaration of Conformity (MD3P339) certifies the Razorback Elite Maxx to this revision.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M

Construction fall protection, including the body-harness requirement for personal fall arrest systems under 1926.502(d).

OSHA 29 CFR 1910

General industry fall protection and personal fall arrest harness requirements.

Class 3 full body harness

A full body harness configuration with sternal, dorsal, and side attachment points plus a positioning waist belt.

How to Fit the Razorback Elite Maxx

Fit per the Malta Dynamics harness user instructions. A correctly adjusted harness is essential for it to arrest a fall safely. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Shake it out. Hold the dorsal (back) D-Ring, shake the harness so the straps fall free, and unfasten any buckled straps.
  2. Put on the shoulder straps. Slip the straps over your shoulders and keep the dorsal D-Ring centered between your shoulder blades.
  3. Connect the leg straps. Route each leg strap and fasten its buckle, keeping the connection snug but not pinching.
  4. Fasten the waist belt. Buckle the belt and adjust it snug at the hips for support and to seat the side D-Rings level.
  5. Connect the chest strap. Fasten the sternal (chest) buckle and position it across the breastbone, 6 to 8 inches below the throat.
  6. Final adjustment. Snug all straps so no more than a flat hand fits between the webbing and your body, with no slack and no twisted straps.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the harness before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every six months per the Malta Dynamics inspection form. Remove the harness from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Webbing: cuts, burns, holes, frayed or pulled fibers, paint or chemical contamination, or heat and UV damage.
  • Stitching: broken, pulled, or cut stitches on shoulder, chest, leg, or back straps.
  • D-Rings and hardware: cracks, distortion, sharp edges, corrosion, or rough operation of buckles.
  • Impact indicator: any deployed or activated fall-arrest indicator (where fitted).
  • Labels: ANSI and OSHA markings and the date of first use must remain legible and intact.

Retirement triggers: any fall-arrest event, a deployed impact indicator, or any cut, burn, or hardware damage. Once a harness has arrested a fall it must be retired from service and destroyed - it cannot be returned to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Malta Dynamics Razorback Elite Maxx Sternal D-Ring Harness?
It is a Class 3 full body harness built for tower and fixed-ladder climbing, based on the Razorback Elite with a sewn-in waist belt and enhanced padding added for comfort and support. It has a sternal (front) D-Ring for climbing, a dorsal (back) D-Ring for fall arrest, and two side D-Rings for positioning, with all-aluminum hardware and built-in rescue handles, and meets ANSI Z359.11-2021 and OSHA standards.
How is the Maxx different from the standard Razorback Elite?
The Maxx adds a sewn-in waist belt and extra padding for added support and comfort during long shifts and work positioning. The standard Razorback Elite has the same D-Ring configuration but no belt, making it lighter at 3.3 to 3.9 lb versus 4.7 to 5.2 lb for the belted Maxx.
What is the sternal (front) D-Ring for?
The sternal D-Ring is a front attachment point for ladder climbing and tower work, such as connecting to a ladder-safety or climbing system or for controlled descent and rescue. The dorsal (back) D-Ring remains the connection point for general fall arrest with a self-retracting lifeline or shock-absorbing lanyard.
What sizes and weights does the Razorback Elite Maxx come in?
Four sizes: S-M (B4200), L-XL (B4201), 2XL (B4202), and 3XL (B4203), weighing 4.7 to 5.2 lb across the range. The worker capacity is 130 to 310 lb per worker. Use the Malta Dynamics harness selection guide to match worker height and weight to a size.
Which OSHA and ANSI standards does the Razorback Elite Maxx meet?
Per the Declaration of Conformity (MD3P339, Intertek), the Razorback Elite Maxx meets ANSI Z359.11-2021 and is compliant with OSHA 1926 Subpart M and OSHA 1910, with independent ISO 17025 third-party laboratory testing.
Can the waist belt be used for fall arrest?
No. The sewn-in waist belt and side D-Rings are for work positioning only - they support a worker leaning into a positioning lanyard, not a fall. Fall arrest must use the dorsal (back) D-Ring with a rated connecting device and anchorage.
What else do I need to build a complete fall protection system?
The harness is the wearable part only. Each worker also needs a compatible connecting device - a self-retracting lifeline or a shock-absorbing lanyard - clipped to the correct D-Ring, plus a rated anchorage such as the Malta Dynamics A6304 anchor plate. Size the connector free fall and deceleration distance to the available fall clearance, and use the Fall Protection Calculator above to plan the system.
