Who Needs This Product

The 1042-W anchors one worker at up to 340 lb including tools and equipment for fall arrest, work positioning, and fall restraint with a maximum 6 ft free fall, and serves as an anchor in engineered horizontal lifelines and window washing systems. Commercial roofers, maintenance teams, and window washing contractors install it permanently on wood, metal, or concrete structures. Each worker still wears a full body harness with an energy absorber, lanyard, or SRL meeting current OSHA, ANSI, or CSA standards, and anchors are spaced 20 to 30 ft on center.

Polyurethane foam filling and ASTM 123 hot dip galvanizing protect the riser inside and out, rated -30 to +130 degrees F.

Structural attachment only

Bolted, concrete embedded, or field welded only; screw attachment is not permitted for risers over 18 inches.

Window washing rated

Serves suspension tie-back and fall arrest anchorage under ANSI/IWCA 1-14.1 with bolted, welded, or embedded attachment.

HLL anchor rated

Anchors CRA horizontal lifelines up to 240 ft rigged to the CRA HLL Rigging Manual.

Bolted attachment required for HLL and window washing use. This 24 inch model must always be bolted, concrete embedded, or field welded; never screw attach it. The supporting structure must hold 5,000 lb or 2 times the intended load per OSHA 1910.140, and backer plates may be required when the substrate cannot carry the load alone. Field welds require a certified welder with E70XX electrode and inspection by a qualified person.

Installation Overview

Full procedures, fastener tables, and substrate figures are in the CRA manual linked below. The essentials:

  1. Confirm the attachment point supports 5,000 lb or 2 times the intended load, at locations specified by the project architect, engineer, or safety consultant.
  2. Bolted, concrete embedded, or field welded only; screw attachment is not permitted for risers over 18 inches.
  3. Use certified grade 8, grade 5, or 18-8 stainless bolts or A307 rod with matching lock nuts; never hot dip galvanized bolts.
  4. Add a plywood backer or backer plate when the primary sheathing is OSB or under 3/4 inch plywood.
  5. For concrete, use 1/2 inch or larger wedge bolts with flat washers in cured 2,500 PSI minimum concrete.
  6. Bolted window washing anchors must be proof loaded to 2,500 lb before fall protection use; the completed installation must be inspected and certified by a qualified or competent person.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before installation and each use, with documented annual inspections. Remove the anchor from service when any of the following apply:

  • The riser is bent or deformed.
  • Weld cracks are present.
  • Rust that does not clean up with cold zinc coating.
  • Fasteners are missing; do not use until the installation is corrected.
  • The PID label or vent hole plug is missing and cannot be replaced.
  • The anchor was subjected to a free fall or the supporting structure is damaged.

Tag anchors removed from service to prevent further use until inspected by a qualified or competent person.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the CRA post heights?
Riser height positions the loop top above roofing, insulation, or ballast: 12 and 18 inch Schedule 40 models use the 52-hole plate and may screw attach for single person use, while the 24 inch model steps up to Schedule 80 pipe and a 5/8 inch thick 12-hole plate that must be bolted, embedded, or welded.
Can I screw attach the 1042-W?
No. Risers over 18 inches must be bolted, concrete embedded, or field welded per the CRA manual, and HLL and window washing anchors always require structural attachment.
What connectors fit the 1090 loop top?
Snaphooks, carabiners, and Super Anchor HLL end anchor components with 3,600 lb gate strengths meeting current ANSI, OSHA, or CSA standards. Connectors must rotate freely and two connectors must never attach to one loop top.
Is the 1042-W rated for window washing?
Yes, under ANSI/IWCA 1-14.1: two anchors per drop point (one suspension, one independent fall arrest), 12 ft maximum spacing, engineering analysis of the supporting member, annual inspections, and recertification every 10 years by a registered professional engineer.
Can I use it for a horizontal lifeline?
Yes, in CRA horizontal lifelines up to 240 ft rigged to the CRA HLL Rigging Manual with bolted, embedded, or welded attachment. Pair with 1031-PG pass-thru intermediate anchors for cable travel across long spans.
How strong is the anchor?
Ultimate strength is 5,000 lb minimum in any direction applied to the loop top, the cast loop top itself is rated to 10,000 lb tensile, and maximum on-site proof load is 2,500 lb.
What inspections does the anchor require?
Inspect before installation and each use, with documented annual inspections: riser deformation, weld cracks, rust, missing fasteners, vent hole plug, and PID label condition. Remove from service after any fall until a qualified or competent person inspects it.
