Who Needs This Product

The 1031-W is a commercial anchorage connector for one worker at up to 340 lb including tools and equipment, for fall arrest, work positioning, and fall restraint with a maximum 6 ft free fall. Roofing, maintenance, and window washing contractors use the loop top as a compatible connection point for snaphooks, carabiners, and Super Anchor HLL end anchor components. Each worker still wears a full body harness with an energy absorber, lanyard, or SRL that meets current OSHA, ANSI, or CSA standards. Single person and HLL anchors are spaced 20 to 30 ft on center per the manual.

Installation Overview

Full procedures, fastener tables, and substrate figures are in the CRA manual linked below. The essentials:

  1. Confirm the attachment point supports 5,000 lb or 2 times the intended load, with locations specified by the project architect, engineer, or safety consultant.
  2. For bolted installations use a minimum of 4 certified 1/2 inch grade 8, grade 5, or 18-8 stainless bolts or A307 rod with matching lock nuts; the supplied stainless bolts fit the 4-hole base.
  3. Add a backer plate when the substrate cannot carry the load alone, such as concrete slabs under 4 inches.
  4. On the 1207 standing seam plate, bolt the 4-hole base to the plate corner holes with the supplied bolts.
  5. For concrete, use 1/2 inch or larger wedge bolts per Table 2.0 with flat washers in 2,500 PSI minimum cured concrete.
  6. Do not proof load screw attached anchors; bolted window washing anchors must be proof loaded to 2,500 lb before fall protection use.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before installation and each use, with documented annual inspections. Remove the anchor from service when any of the following apply:

  • The riser is bent or deformed.
  • Weld cracks are present.
  • Rust that does not clean up with cold zinc coating.
  • Fasteners are missing; do not use until the installation is corrected.
  • The PID label or vent hole plug is missing and cannot be replaced.
  • The anchor was subjected to a free fall or the supporting structure is damaged.

Tag anchors removed from service to prevent further use until inspected by a qualified or competent person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the 1031-W bolt to the 1207 standing seam plate?
Yes. The 6x6x3/8 inch 4-hole base plate bolts to the 1/2 inch corner holes of the 1207 SSCA plate with the included stainless bolts, which puts a 10,000 lb loop top on a non-penetrating standing seam anchor for tie-off or HLL end anchorage.
What connectors fit the 1090 loop top?
Snaphooks, carabiners, and Super Anchor HLL end anchor components with 3,600 lb gate strengths that conform to current ANSI, OSHA, or CSA standards. Connectors must rotate freely, and two connectors must never share one loop top.
Can I use the 1031-W as a horizontal lifeline anchor?
Yes, as an end anchor for CRA HLL systems up to 240 ft with anchors spaced a maximum of 30 ft apart, rigged to the CRA Horizontal Lifeline Rigging Manual. HLL end anchors must be bolted, field welded, or concrete embedded, never screw attached.
How strong is the anchor?
Ultimate strength is a minimum of 5,000 lb in any direction the load is applied to the loop top, and the cast loop top itself is rated to 10,000 lb tensile. Maximum on-site proof load is 2,500 lb and the 4 to 1 design load is 1,250 lb.
Is the 1031-W rated for window washing?
Yes, CRA loop top anchors serve window washing tie-back and fall arrest anchorage under ANSI/IWCA 1-14.1, which requires engineering analysis of the supporting structure, 12 ft maximum anchor spacing, annual inspections, and recertification every 10 years by a registered professional engineer.
What is the difference between the 1031-W and the 1031-PG?
The 1031-W carries a 1090 loop top for tie-off and HLL end anchorage. The 1031-PG carries a 1091 pass-thru top and works only as an HLL intermediate anchor that lets the lifeline cable travel through without disconnecting.
What inspections does the anchor require?
Inspect before installation and each use, and document annual inspections. Check for riser deformation, weld cracks, rust, missing fasteners, and the PID label, and remove the anchor from service after any fall until a qualified or competent person inspects it.
