Super Anchor Safety SideWinder Series

2904-B SideWinder3 20 ft Cable SRL, ANSI Class A

The Super Anchor 2904-B SideWinder3 is a 20 ft cable self retracting lifeline built by Bexus for Super Anchor Safety, with an anodized aluminum casing, 304 stainless steel casing covers, a 3/16 inch galvanized steel lifeline, and a 100 percent stainless steel centrifugal braking system. The swivel snaphook carries a built-in fall indicator, and a No. 5001-Z steel twist lock carabiner is included for the anchorage end.

Rated ANSI Z359.14-2012 Class A for one worker at 310 lb including tools, the SideWinder3 limits free fall to 24 inches and arrests a fall within 24 inches at a 1,350 lb average arrest force. That is less than half the stopping distance of a Class B unit such as our Karam-built 2904-K SideWinder, which arrests within 54 inches at a 900 lb average force. Compliant with OSHA 1926.502.

Who Needs This Product

The SideWinder3 is for roofers, framers, and maintenance crews who need the shortest possible stopping distance from a cable SRL, which makes the Class A rating the right call when the clearance below the work surface is tight. The casing anchors to a 5,000 lb rated point with the included twist lock carabiner, the cable pays out and retracts as the worker moves, and the centrifugal brake locks when the cable is subjected to rapid movement. Specified uses are fall arrest with a maximum 24 inch free fall over wood edges, and fall restraint. The SideWinder3 is not approved for leading edge fall hazards; the manual specifies SRL-LE models when the tie-off point is between horizontal and overhead and leading edge fall hazards are present.

Features

Anodized aluminum casing

The casing is anodized aluminum with 304 stainless steel casing covers per the SideWinder3 addendum, a step up in durability from molded plastic housings.

Class A arrest performance

The stainless steel centrifugal brake arrests a fall within 24 inches at a 1,350 lb average force, protecting workers when clearance below the work surface is limited.

Swivel snaphook with fall indicator

The B end snaphook swivels to fight cable twist and exposes a visual indicator after any arrest, sending the unit straight to factory service.

Twist lock carabiner included

A No. 5001-Z steel twist lock carabiner ships in the retail box for the A end anchorage connection.

Compact 20 ft format

20 ft of 3/16 inch galvanized cable at 14 lb covers most residential roofs and floor systems without rope drag.

Serialized service labels

PID labels on both sides of the casing record the serial number, lot manufacture date, and factory service dates, with an inspection label for semi-annual competent person checks.

Not for leading edge fall hazards. The SideWinder2/SideWinder3 manual specifies SRL-LE models when the tie-off point is between horizontal and overhead and leading edge fall hazards are present, and warns that free falls over the edge of a fall hazard can result in severing of the SRL cable. For that work, step up to the SideWinder-LE Class 2 SRL. Any unit subjected to a fall, or that fails a function test or inspection, must be returned to the Super Anchor factory for service. Never open the casing: the recoil spring can cause serious injury.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.14-2012 Class A

The SideWinder3 PID label certifies compliance with ANSI Z359.14-12 as a Class A self retracting lifeline per the 2020 addendum.

OSHA 1926.502

Meets fall arrest criteria with a 5,000 lb anchorage and 1,800 lb maximum arrest force.

Factory Service Program

Units subjected to a fall or failing inspection return to Super Anchor Safety for authorized service; field repair is prohibited.

Serialized Inspection Labels

Serial number, first service date, and semi-annual competent person inspections recorded on the label pack.

Typical Applications

Residential RoofingHands-free mobility off ridge and truss anchors.
Wood Frame ConstructionFall arrest over wood edges during framing and sheathing.
Low Clearance WorkClass A stopping distance for tight fall clearances.
Fall RestraintB end to the dorsal or side D-ring to keep workers off the edge.
Roof InspectionsFast tie-off for inspectors and estimators.
Solar InstallationCable pays out across the array without rope drag.
Chimney and Skylight WorkShort falls arrested before a worker reaches the hazard.
Salt Air EnvironmentsStainless covers and brake resist corrosion, with a 1 year salt air service interval.

Setup and Function Testing

Connection figures, hazard warnings, and inspection tables are in the 03-2020 SideWinder2/SideWinder3 manual and the SideWinder3 addendum linked below. The basics:

  1. Select an anchorage capable of 5,000 lb for fall arrest or 3,000 lb for fall restraint, or 2 times the engineered fall protection load.
  2. Attach the casing A end to the anchorage with the included No. 5001-Z twist lock carabiner.
  3. Connect the B end swivel snaphook to the dorsal D-ring of a full body harness, or a side D-ring for fall restraint only.
  4. Perform the locking test: pull the cable quickly away from the casing; the brake must lock, then release tension to unlock.
  5. Perform the retraction test: release the cable slowly and confirm it fully retracts into the casing.
  6. Keep the service angle to less than 40 degrees to avoid swing falls, and keep the cable away from metal edges and sharp or abrasive surfaces.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with documented semi-annual competent person inspections. Remove the SRL from service when any of the following apply:

  • The unit was subjected to a fall or the snaphook fall indicator is deployed.
  • The cable has cuts, kinks, abrasions, gouges, or broken strands, or a swage or thimble is damaged.
  • The unit fails the locking test or does not fully retract.
  • The casing or handle is cracked or broken, or casing screws are missing.
  • PID labels are missing or not readable.
  • The semi-annual competent person inspection is overdue or the service life has passed 5 years.

Tag units removed from service to prevent further use and return them to the factory for authorized service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Class A and a Class B SRL?
Stopping distance and arrest force under ANSI Z359.14-2012. A Class A unit like the 2904-B arrests a fall within 24 inches at a 1,350 lb average force, while a Class B unit like our Karam-built 2904-K arrests within 54 inches at a 900 lb average force. Class A is the right choice when the clearance below the work surface is tight.
What is the difference between the 2904-B and the 2904-K SideWinder?
The 2904-B SideWinder3 is built by Bexus with an anodized aluminum casing, 304 stainless steel covers, and an ANSI Class A rating. The 2904-K is built by Karam with an impact resistant ABS casing and an ANSI Class B rating. Both carry 20 ft of 3/16 inch galvanized cable, a swivel snaphook with fall indicator, and an included No. 5001-Z twist lock carabiner.
Is the SideWinder3 rated for leading edge work?
No. The manual specifies a maximum 24 inch free fall over wood edges and requires SRL-LE models when the tie-off point is between horizontal and overhead and leading edge fall hazards are present. For foot-level tie-off over an edge, use the SideWinder-LE Class 2 models. The specifications listed on this page outline the build details you need for your application.
What anchorage does the 2904-B require?
A point capable of supporting 5,000 lb for fall arrest or 3,000 lb for fall restraint, or 2 times the engineered fall protection load. Attach the A end with the included No. 5001-Z steel twist lock carabiner to a tie-off strap, roof anchor, or other compliant anchorage. Verify that the mounting surface is sound and that every fastener is fully seated before the anchor is put into service.
How do I test the unit before each use?
Two function tests. Pull the cable quickly away from the casing, which must lock the brake, then release tension to unlock. Then release the cable slowly, allowing it to fully retract into the casing. Inspect the cable, snaphook, fall indicator, casing, and labels before every shift. Inspect it before every use, and retire it right away if you find corrosion, cracks, or bent components.
What is the service life of the SideWinder3?
It depends on the environment: 3 to 5 years for light indoor use, 2 or more years for heavy indoor use, 1 to 2 years for heavy outdoor use, and about 1 year in salt air. A competent person inspects the unit every 6 months and records it on the inspection label.
What ships in the box?
One 2904-B SideWinder3 SRL with 20 ft of galvanized cable, a No. 5001-Z steel twist lock carabiner for the anchorage end, an auxiliary label pack, and the instruction manual with the SideWinder3 addendum, packed in a retail box. Confirm each component in the system is compatible and rated for the intended use before connecting to it.
