The Mounting Half of a SteelGrip Stanchion

Every SteelGrip I-beam stanchion is two assemblies: the vertical post and the base that clamps it to the beam. This product is the base and clamp set only, which lets you stage mounting points on multiple beams and move one post between them, or restore a stanchion whose base has taken a beating.

The base features plated steel construction with 7/8 in Grade 5 securing bolts, and the clamping rod features 1 in diameter plated steel construction with a wing nut and cotter pin for tool-free installation.

The base is only as strong as its installation. Install per the FallTech manual on structural steel verified by a qualified person, torque the Grade 5 bolts to specification, and never load a horizontal lifeline system that has not been designed and approved as a complete system.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech MHLL instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Verify the steel. A qualified person confirms the beam and structure meet the HLL system design requirements.
  2. Clamp the base. Position the base on the flange, run the clamping rod through, and tighten the wing nut and Grade 5 bolts per the manual.
  3. Install the post. Set the SteelGrip post into the base, secure it, and rig the horizontal lifeline per the system design.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use following the MHLL manual. A competent person must inspect the system at least annually.

  • Base plates: bends, cracks, and elongated bolt holes.
  • Fasteners: Grade 5 bolts present, tight, and undamaged.
  • Clamping rod: straight, threads clean, wing nut and cotter pin functional.
  • Plating: corrosion that pits the steel rather than just staining it.

Retirement triggers: deformation, cracked welds, missing or damaged fasteners, or any loading by a fall. Remove the base from service and replace it.
