Who Needs This Product

Structural steel crews use SteelGrip I-beam stanchions to put a compliant cable lifeline on the iron before decking exists. The stanchion clamps to the beam flange without welding or drilling, raises the line to a workable height, and moves to the next bay when the crew does. Kits pair two or three stanchions with a complete SteelGrip cable assembly.

Torque the clamps and verify the span. Stanchion bases must be torqued to the manual specification on flanges within the rated width and thickness range, and horizontal lifelines must be installed under a qualified person per OSHA 1926.502(d)(8). Add cable deflection to your fall clearance calculation.

Typical Applications

Steel erectionElevated tie-off along beams before decking.
Metal deckingProtection for crews landing and fastening deck.
Bridge girdersClamp-on spans without hot work.
Precast erectionTemporary lines along structural members.
Plant structuresMaintenance spans on rack steel and crane rails.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Clamp the stanchions. Fit each base to the beam flange, adjust the clamping rod to the flange width, and torque the Grade 5 bolts per the manual.
  2. Set the spacing. Position end stanchions at the span limits, adding an intermediate stanchion and pass-through bracket on spans over 60 ft.
  3. Rig the cable. Route the SteelGrip cable through the stanchion heads, terminate, and clamp the field end.
  4. Tension the system. Tighten until the in-line tension indicator shows working tension.
  5. Connect the workers. Maximum two workers per single span with energy-absorbing connectors and verified fall clearance.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect stanchions and cable before each use. A competent person must perform a documented inspection at least every six months.

  • Post and base: bends, cracks, and weld condition.
  • Clamping rod and wing nut: full thread engagement on the flange.
  • Bolts: Grade 5 hardware present and torqued.
  • Cable system: wires, absorber, tension indicator, and clips per the cable checklist.

Retirement triggers: any fall event, bent posts, damaged clamps, or missing hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

What beams do the stanchions clamp to?
The clamping rod adjusts to I-beam flanges from 4 in up to 12, 18, or 24 in wide depending on the model, with flange thickness up to 2-1/4 in. No welding or drilling is required.
How strong is the stanchion?
Each SteelGrip stanchion is rated at 8,000 lb minimum static strength, with a plated carbon steel post, base, and clamp secured by 7/8 in Grade 5 bolts.
How many workers can tie off per span?
Two workers maximum per single span at 310 lb each. On kits, the complete SteelGrip cable assembly with coil energy absorber and tension indicator is included.
What spans can I build?
End stanchions handle spans up to 60 ft. Longer runs add an intermediate stanchion with the 630001T pass-through bracket, which lets workers stay 100 percent tied off as they cross.
How high does the stanchion put the line?
The 42 in post raises the lifeline above deck level, which reduces free fall compared to a foot-level span and improves clearance margins.
Do the stanchions damage the beam?
No. The clamp grips the flange mechanically with a 1 in clamping rod and wing nut, so there is no hot work and no holes in the structural member.
Does this meet OSHA requirements?
Yes. The system meets OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140 when installed under a qualified person's supervision per the FallTech manual.
