Who Needs This Product

Steel erectors, bridge crews, precast contractors, and plant maintenance teams run SteelGrip cable horizontal lifelines where the span needs to survive sparks, abrasion, and weeks of exposure. The 3/8 in galvanized cable system holds up where rope will not, and the stainless coil energy absorber keeps end-anchor loads controlled during a fall arrest. Two workers per span ride the line with their own harnesses and connectors.

Cable systems must be installed under a qualified person. OSHA 1926.502(d)(8) requires horizontal lifelines to be designed, installed, and used under qualified-person supervision. Verify anchor strength, clip torque, working tension on the indicator, and fall clearance including cable deflection before anyone ties off.

Typical Applications

Steel erectionBeam-to-beam spans that survive welding and grinding.
Bridge workLong-exposure spans for inspection and rehab crews.
Precast and tilt-upTie-off during panel setting and connection work.
Plant maintenanceTurnaround spans across pipe racks and tank tops.
Leading edge deckingDurable line behind a moving edge.
Long projectsSystems that stay rigged for weeks.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Select the anchors. Choose end anchorage points that meet the manual's strength requirements, or use FallTech pass-through anchors or I-beam stanchions.
  2. Terminate the cable. Connect the terminated end, route the cable, and clamp the field end with the supplied wire rope clips and thimbles.
  3. Tension the system. Tighten the turnbuckle, or crank the ratchet strap on SteelGrip Plus, until the in-line tension indicator shows working tension.
  4. Connect the workers. Maximum two workers per single span, each with an energy-absorbing connector, after verifying fall clearance including cable deflection.
  5. Inspect daily. Re-check tension and hardware each shift while the system stays rigged.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the system before each use and re-check tension every shift. A competent person must perform a documented inspection at least every six months.

  • Cable: broken wires, kinks, bird-caging, corrosion, and damaged terminations.
  • Coil energy absorber: coils tight and undeployed; no stretch marks.
  • Tension indicator: reads working tension; no deformation.
  • Turnbuckle or ratchet: threads and pawls clean and functional.
  • Clips and shackles: correct torque, no missing hardware.

Retirement triggers: any fall event, energy absorber deployment, broken cable wires, or hardware that fails inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many workers can use the system at once?
Two workers maximum per single span at 310 lb each, including clothing and tools. Each worker needs an energy-absorbing lanyard or SRL between the harness and the cable.
What tensions the cable?
A 5/8 in galvanized turnbuckle tensions the system, and the in-line tension indicator confirms when the span reaches working tension.
What keeps end-anchor loads under control in a fall?
The 304 stainless steel coil energy absorber stretches progressively during fall arrest, limiting the force transmitted to your end anchorages. It is a one-time device and must be replaced after any deployment.
Do I need to supply my own anchors?
No, this kit includes two 6 ft polyester web pass-through sling anchors rated at 5,000 lb minimum, so the span rigs to structural steel or concrete columns without extra hardware.
Can I cut the cable to length in the field?
Yes. One end ships terminated and thimbled, and the field end is cut and clamped with the supplied US-made wire rope clips and thimbles per the manual's clip count and torque.
How much clearance do I need below the span?
Cable systems deflect during fall arrest. Add the deflection from the FallTech manual to your connector's free fall and deceleration distance, and verify against the clearance available. The Fall Protection Calculator on this page runs the numbers.
Does this meet OSHA requirements?
Yes. The system meets OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140 when installed under a qualified person's supervision with compliant anchorages.
