Who Needs This Product

Safety managers standing up a rescue plan for towers, plants, and confined-height work buy a complete rescue and descent kit so the capability arrives in one package: descent device, rated kernmantle lifeline, connectors, and jobsite storage. The triple-mode lifting capability raises a casualty to release a snagged connector before lowering, which is the move most fall rescues actually require.

Staged means ready. OSHA 1926.502(d)(20) requires provisions for prompt rescue wherever fall arrest is used. A kit locked in a distant conex is not prompt. Stage this kit at the work area, train the crew on it, and inspect it on schedule.

Applicable requirement for this equipment: ANSI Z359.4-2013.

OSHA 1926.502(d)(20)

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Stage the kit. Keep the kit at the work area, sealed in its barrel or bag, ready for immediate deployment.
  2. Anchor the device. Connect to a rated anchor above the casualty per the rescue plan.
  3. Lift to release. Use the handwheel, ratchet handle, or power drive to raise the casualty enough to disconnect the loaded lanyard or SRL.
  4. Descend under control. The centrifugal brake lowers at a constant 2.6 ft per second.
  5. Shuttle for multiple users. The bi-directional design lets successive users descend alternately on each rope end.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the kit on the schedule in the manual and after every deployment or training use. A competent person inspection is required at least annually.

  • Rope: full-length check for cuts, abrasion, and sheath damage.
  • Device: brake function test, lifting modes engage and hold.
  • Connectors: aluminum alloy hardware free of cracks and gate damage.
  • Storage: barrel seal or bag intact; contents complete and dry.

Retirement triggers: any emergency use of the lifeline, failed brake test, or rope damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the triple-mode lifting do?
The device raises a casualty by handwheel, ratcheting handle, or a power drill drive. Lifting first is the key move in most fall rescues because it unloads the casualty's connector so it can be disconnected before lowering.
How many workers can descend?
The device is rated 440 lb for two users, with bi-directional shuttle operation allowing successive descents on alternating rope ends at 2.6 ft per second for one user.
What rope does the kit run?
7/16 in sheathed-core kernmantle with aluminum alloy connectors. The sheath resists moisture and abrasion for long service life at the jobsite.
Why the sealed barrel?
The barrel protects the kit through months of jobsite staging, keeps the rope dry and mitigates UV exposure, and confirms at a glance that the kit is complete and untouched.
Does OSHA require rescue capability?
Yes. OSHA 1926.502(d)(20) requires prompt rescue provisions wherever personal fall arrest systems are used. A staged descent kit is the most direct way to satisfy that requirement.
