Who Needs This Product

A vertical lifeline turns one overhead anchor into a full-height climbing and work line: the worker's rope grab rides the 5/8 in polyester line, locking on if a fall starts. Crews pick lengths from 25 to 500 ft, snap hook or thimble-eye top ends, and back-spliced or taped bottom ends to suit the drop and the rigging.

Complies

Complies with ANSI Z359.15-2014.

The lifeline is half a system. A vertical lifeline needs a rated overhead anchor above it and an ANSI Z359.15 rope grab riding it. Protect the rope at every edge crossing and keep the end treatment clear of the work below.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.15-2014

Applicable requirement for this equipment: ANSI Z359.15-2014.

OSHA 1926.502

Construction fall protection criteria for personal fall arrest system components, including connectors, lanyards, and lifelines.

Typical Applications

RoofingThe classic steep-slope lifeline with a rope grab.
Suspended accessIndependent lifelines beside work platforms.
Wind and towersLong lengths for full-height protection.
Bridge and dam workExtended drops needing 200 ft plus lines.
Confined spaceVertical entries with a fall arrester on the line.

How to Use

Follow the FallTech instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Anchor the top. Snap hook or thimble-eye connects to a rated overhead anchor.
  2. Drop the line. The lifeline must reach the lowest work level with the end treatment clear of hazards.
  3. Install the rope grab. An ANSI Z359.15 compatible grab rides the 5/8 in line, arrow up.
  4. Connect and climb. Grab to harness via its lanyard; trailing grabs follow, manual grabs reposition by hand.
  5. Protect the rope. Use edge protection anywhere the line crosses a corner.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the full length before each use, with a competent person inspection at least annually.

  • Rope: cuts, abrasion, glazing, soft spots, and UV bleaching.
  • Splice or taped end: intact and secure.
  • Snap hook or thimble: gate lock function, no corrosion.
  • Diameter: consistent 5/8 in with no hourglassing.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest, rope damage, splice failure, or a failed inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What rope is this?
5/8 in polyester lifeline rope, the industry-standard diameter that ANSI Z359.15 rope grabs are sized for, with a rated top termination and the end treatment named in the option.
Which length and end treatment do I need?
Length must reach your lowest work level. Back-spliced ends resist unraveling for long service, taped ends save cost on shorter-life lines, thimble eyes rig to shackles, and double snap hooks connect both ends to hardware.
What rope grab does it take?
Any ANSI Z359.15 compatible 5/8 in rope grab, including the FallTech 7479 self-tracking, 7489 anti-panic trailing, and 8353/8368 lanyard-integrated adjusters we carry.
How do I protect the rope over an edge?
Use edge protection wherever the line crosses a corner or abrasive surface; a loaded rope over a sharp edge is the classic lifeline failure.
What standard applies?
ANSI Z359.15 for single anchor lifelines and OSHA 1926.502. The DoC is in the submittals section.
