PSSW2R Rebar Positioning Chain Assembly with Swivel

The Frontline PSSW2R is the rodbuster's positioning workhorse: a double Y-shaped assembly of high tensile Grade 80 chain with a swivel rebar hook at the union and forged clevis snap hooks at the harness ends. The swivel kills chain twist as you work down the curtain.

Alloy steel throughout - zinc plated, deburred, and polished - with 0.31 in chain links and a minimum tensile strength of 5,000 lbs. SATRA tested to ANSI Z359.3-2017 for lanyard and positioning lanyard performance, aligning with OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.66.

Who Needs This Product

This product is a rebar positioning chain assembly - the ironworker's third hand. Clip the swivel rebar hook to the curtain, lean back into the harness side D-rings, and both hands are free to tie. Chain shrugs off the hot, abrasive, torch-adjacent work that destroys webbing positioning devices. Use with a harness positioning system; a separate fall arrest system is still required.

Features

Swivel union

The rebar hook swivels, so the chain never winds up as you move.

Grade 80 chain

0.31 in high tensile links - the strength class rigging chains use.

Forged clevis snap hooks

Positive harness connections at both side D-rings.

Deburred and polished

No sharp edges chewing gloves or webbing.

Chain beats webbing here

Slag, torch heat, and rebar abrasion cannot retire it early.

SATRA tested

Independent lab testing to ANSI Z359.3-2017.

Positioning is not fall arrest. A positioning chain holds you in place at the work - it does not catch a fall. OSHA requires an independent personal fall arrest system in addition to positioning. Inspect the chain, hooks, and swivel before each use, and connect only per the Frontline manual.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.3-2017

American National Standard for positioning and travel restraint - SATRA third-party test report linked in Submittals.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Federal construction fall protection criteria, including positioning device requirements.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910

General industry requirements (CFR 1910.66 per spec sheet).

Typical Applications

Rebar tyingLean back and work the curtain hands-free.
Column cagesPosition at vertical steel.
FormworkHold position at walls and decks.
Precast connectionsSteady at the joint.
Tower legsPositioning at lattice steel.
Hot work zonesChain survives slag and sparks.

How to Use the PSSW2R

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check chain, hooks, swivel, and gates before each use.
  2. Connect to the work. Clip the swivel rebar hook over the rebar or member.
  3. Connect to the harness. Snap the side hooks to both positioning D-rings.
  4. Load and lean. Set your stance and lean into the system - hands free.
  5. Keep arrest separate. Maintain your independent fall arrest connection at all times.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Chain links: stretch, deformation, nicks, gouges, or corrosion.
  • Hooks: deformation, cracks, corrosion, or gates that fail to close and double-lock.
  • Swivel: free rotation, no play or cracking at the bearing.
  • Connection points: wear at the union and end fittings.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Retire the assembly immediately after any fall event, any dropped-load shock, or if any inspection point fails. Destroy retired equipment so it cannot return to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why chain instead of webbing for positioning?
Rebar work is abrasive, hot, and steel-on-steel. Chain shrugs off conditions that retire webbing positioning lanyards in weeks.
What does the swivel do?
The rebar hook at the union rotates freely, so working down a curtain never twists the chain legs into a knot.
What is the strength rating?
Minimum tensile strength of 5,000 lbs through the Grade 80 chain assembly, per the spec sheet.
Is this fall arrest?
No - positioning only. OSHA requires an independent fall arrest system in addition to a positioning device.
Has it been independently tested?
Yes - SATRA tested it to ANSI Z359.3-2017 lanyard and positioning lanyard performance; the report is linked in Submittals.
Is there a Made-in-USA version?
Yes - the PSSW2R-US Patriot positioning chain, made in the USA. See Compatible and Related Products.
What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Fall arrest catches a worker after a fall happens; fall restraint prevents the worker from reaching the fall hazard in the first place. For a deeper walkthrough with system examples, read our guide: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint. Use the Fall Protection Calculator below to size the right system for your job.
