RLA18B Rescue 18 ft Ladder Kit with Belay System

The Frontline RLA18B is a fast-deploy rescue ladder kit: an 18 ft drop-in nylon webbing ladder with a locking ANSI steel carabiner for quick attachment, packed in a rugged roll-top ballistic nylon bag with reflective lettering so it is easy to find in an emergency. A pulley and rope grab belay system lets the rescuer help the casualty climb efficiently and safely, reducing the risk of a secondary fall.

The webbing ladder drops in fast from the roll-top bag, the carabiner meets ANSI Z359.12 at 30 kN, and the kit is compliant with OSHA 1910.140 and 1926.503 rescue requirements. Max user weight 310 lbs, total kit weight 8.2 lbs.

Who Needs This Product

This product is emergency rescue equipment - a deployable ladder that gets a stranded or suspended worker down, or a rescuer up. Safety managers stage it where falls or confined space entrapment are a risk. It is part of the rescue plan OSHA requires whenever workers are exposed to fall hazards; train on it before you need it.

A rescue kit is only as good as the plan and the training. OSHA requires a rescue plan for fall hazards - staging the RLA18B is part of that plan, not a substitute for it. Train rescuers before an emergency, inspect the kit on schedule, and stage it where it can reach the hazard.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.12

American National Standard for connecting components (the 30 kN locking carabiner).

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.503

Construction training requirements for fall protection and rescue.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140

General industry personal fall protection and rescue requirements.

Typical Applications

Roofing crewsStage at the roof access for a fast self-rescue ladder.
Confined spaceEgress aid at vaults and tanks.
Tower workClimb-assist and descent rescue.
Steel erectionOn-site rescue capability per the plan.
Bridge workReach a suspended worker.
Facility safetyStage where falls are credible.

How to Deploy the RLA18B

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect and stage. Verify the kit on schedule and stage it within reach of the hazard.
  2. Anchor the carabiner. Clip the 30 kN locking carabiner to a rated anchor at the edge.
  3. Drop the ladder. Open the roll-top bag and let the 18 ft webbing ladder fall to the casualty.
  4. Rig the belay. Set the rope grab and pulley so the rescuer can assist the climb and arrest a secondary fall.
  5. Execute the plan. Bring the casualty to safety per your trained rescue procedure.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Ladder webbing and rungs: cuts, fraying, abrasion, or broken rungs.
  • Carabiner: deformation, corrosion, gate and lock function.
  • Rope grab / belay (RLA18B): positive grab and release function.
  • Deployment bag: tears or failed roll-top closure that would slow deployment.
  • Markings and instructions: present, legible, and packed with the kit.

Inspect after every deployment and on a documented schedule. Retire any component that fails inspection. After use in an actual rescue, inspect the full kit before repacking.
