TRG120 Trench Guardrail System, 120 ft

The Frontline TRG120 is a complete 120 ft trench guardrail system: a non-penetrating perimeter rail that rings an open trench or excavation to keep workers and the public back from the edge. Designed for effortless handling and assembly, it sets up in minutes with minimal tools.

The kit includes 14 guardrail posts, 24 top/mid rails (TRG-10), and 4 side rails (TRG-SDRL), all in ASTM rated steel finished in hot-dip galvanized or powder-coated safety green or yellow. With a 200 lb static tensile strength rating, it meets the OSHA guardrail criteria of 1910 and 1926 - turnkey edge protection for the cut.

Passive protection, installed right. A guardrail only protects if every base, post, rail, and toe board is set per the Frontline manual on a suitable surface. Have a competent person verify the installed system before it is relied upon, and re-inspect after any impact.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Guardrail system criteria for construction: 200 lb top-rail load, heights, and toe boards.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.29

Walking-working surface guardrail requirements for general industry.

Engineered design

Components are engineered to meet the applicable OSHA guardrail load criteria per the spec sheet.

Typical Applications

Utility trenchesRing the cut on water, gas, and electric jobs.
PipelinePerimeter protection along the trench.
ExcavationsKeep workers and public back from the edge.
Road workTrench protection in traffic zones.
Foundation digsFence the open excavation.

How to Set Up the TRG120

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check bases, posts, rails, and fittings before each use.
  2. Plan the run. Lay out base/post positions per the manual maximum spacing for your edge.
  3. Set the bases. Place the non-penetrating bases (or clamp/anchor per the system) along the edge.
  4. Install posts and rails. Slide posts into the base fittings and seat top rails, mid rails, and toe boards.
  5. Secure. Tighten grub screws and connections per the manual.
  6. Verify. Have a competent person confirm the system before relying on it.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use and after any impact. Pull any component from service for the conditions below.

  • Posts and bases: bending, cracks, corrosion, or coating breakdown.
  • Clamping / counterweight: secure, no slipping under hand load.
  • Rails and toe boards: secure seating in the fittings, no damage.
  • Fasteners and grub screws: present, functional, tightened per the manual.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Remove any component from service that fails inspection. After any impact or load event, inspect the full system before reuse. Guardrail is passive protection: a damaged system gives false confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the TRG120 cover?
120 ft of trench or excavation perimeter, with 14 posts, 24 top/mid rails, and 4 side rails in the kit.
Does it penetrate the ground?
No - it is a non-penetrating system that sits at the trench edge, which matters around unstable excavated soil.
How fast does it assemble?
Minutes, with minimal tools - it is designed for effortless handling and assembly.
What is the strength rating?
A 200 lb static tensile strength, meeting the OSHA guardrail load criteria.
Is guardrail better than a personal fall arrest system?
Where it fits, yes: guardrail is passive protection that works without the worker donning a harness, finding an anchor, or calculating clearance. OSHA treats guardrail, personal fall arrest, and safety nets as acceptable options; guardrail removes human error from the equation.
