GUTO 10 ft Guardrail Toe Board

The Frontline GUTO is a 10 ft guardrail toe board that completes a guardrail run: it drops into the toe board slots on the Frontline guardrail posts to form a continuous barrier at deck level, stopping tools, fasteners, and debris from being kicked off the edge onto anyone below.

Required by OSHA wherever workers or equipment can pass below a railed edge, the ASTM steel toe board comes in safety green, safety yellow, or hot-dip galvanized to match your system. Built to OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.29 - the falling-object half of a complete guardrail.

Passive protection, installed right. A guardrail only protects if every base, post, rail, and toe board is set per the Frontline manual on a suitable surface. Have a competent person verify the installed system before it is relied upon, and re-inspect after any impact.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Guardrail system criteria for construction: 200 lb top-rail load, heights, and toe boards.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.29

Walking-working surface guardrail requirements for general industry.

Engineered design

Components are engineered to meet the applicable OSHA guardrail load criteria per the spec sheet.

Typical Applications

Over-occupied edgesWhere workers or equipment pass below.
Tool-heavy workStops dropped tools at the edge.
Public-facing edgesProtect people below from debris.
Slab perimetersToe protection on decks.
MezzaninesRequired toe board at elevated edges.
Loading docksKeep material from rolling off.

How to Set Up the GUTO10

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check bases, posts, rails, and fittings before each use.
  2. Plan the run. Lay out base/post positions per the manual maximum spacing for your edge.
  3. Set the bases. Place the non-penetrating bases (or clamp/anchor per the system) along the edge.
  4. Install posts and rails. Slide posts into the base fittings and seat top rails, mid rails, and toe boards.
  5. Secure. Tighten grub screws and connections per the manual.
  6. Verify. Have a competent person confirm the system before relying on it.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use and after any impact. Pull any component from service for the conditions below.

  • Posts and bases: bending, cracks, corrosion, or coating breakdown.
  • Clamping / counterweight: secure, no slipping under hand load.
  • Rails and toe boards: secure seating in the fittings, no damage.
  • Fasteners and grub screws: present, functional, tightened per the manual.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Remove any component from service that fails inspection. After any impact or load event, inspect the full system before reuse. Guardrail is passive protection: a damaged system gives false confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Frontline GUTO toe board?
The GUTO is a 10 ft guardrail toe board that completes a guardrail run. It drops into the toe-board slots on the Frontline guardrail posts to form a continuous barrier at deck level, stopping tools, fasteners, and debris from being kicked off the edge onto anyone below.
When does OSHA require a toe board?
OSHA requires a toe board wherever workers or equipment can pass below a railed edge, to protect them from falling objects. It is the falling-object half of a complete guardrail, alongside the top rail and mid rail.
How does the toe board mount?
It drops into the toe-board slots built into the Frontline guardrail posts, so no separate fasteners are needed. Seat it fully so it forms a continuous barrier at deck level.
What length and finishes are available?
The GUTO is 10 ft long and comes in safety green, safety yellow, or hot-dip galvanized to match your guardrail system. Combine sections to run the full length of the edge.
What standards does it meet?
It is built to OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502 and 1910.29, the guardrail and falling-object criteria for construction and general industry. Pair it with a compliant top-rail guardrail for a complete system.
What is the toe board made of?
It is made from ASTM-rated steel for durability on the jobsite. Inspect it for damage and secure seating in the post slots before relying on it.
Is a toe board part of a complete guardrail?
Yes - a complete OSHA guardrail is the top rail, the mid rail, and the toe board where people or equipment pass below. The GUTO supplies that toe-board element for the Frontline system.
