GUG55 Guardrail 5 ft Rolling Swing Gate

The Frontline GUG55 is a 5 ft rolling swing gate for the Frontline guardrail system - the way to put a controlled opening in a continuous guardrail without leaving an unprotected gap. A support wheel carries the free end so the 60 in gate opens and closes smoothly.

A built-in pin lock secures the gate to the opposing rail quickly and securely, and setup is hassle-free: slide it into a base fitting and tighten the grub screws. Powder coated safety green or yellow for visibility, built to the OSHA guardrail criteria of 1910 and 1926 - safe passage through the rail.

Passive protection, installed right. A guardrail only protects if every base, post, rail, and toe board is set per the Frontline manual on a suitable surface. Have a competent person verify the installed system before it is relied upon, and re-inspect after any impact.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Guardrail system criteria for construction: 200 lb top-rail load, heights, and toe boards.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.29

Walking-working surface guardrail requirements for general industry.

Engineered design

Components are engineered to meet the applicable OSHA guardrail load criteria per the spec sheet.

Typical Applications

Ladder topsGated access where a ladder meets the roof.
Hoist and crane pointsControlled material openings.
Stair landingsGated guardrail at access points.
Loading zonesPass material without removing rail.
Equipment accessControlled entry to a railed area.
Roof hatchesGated guardrail around access.

How to Set Up the GUG55

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check bases, posts, rails, and fittings before each use.
  2. Plan the run. Lay out base/post positions per the manual maximum spacing for your edge.
  3. Set the bases. Place the non-penetrating bases (or clamp/anchor per the system) along the edge.
  4. Install posts and rails. Slide posts into the base fittings and seat top rails, mid rails, and toe boards.
  5. Secure. Tighten grub screws and connections per the manual.
  6. Verify. Have a competent person confirm the system before relying on it.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use and after any impact. Pull any component from service for the conditions below.

  • Posts and bases: bending, cracks, corrosion, or coating breakdown.
  • Clamping / counterweight: secure, no slipping under hand load.
  • Rails and toe boards: secure seating in the fittings, no damage.
  • Fasteners and grub screws: present, functional, tightened per the manual.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Remove any component from service that fails inspection. After any impact or load event, inspect the full system before reuse. Guardrail is passive protection: a damaged system gives false confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Frontline GUG55 guardrail gate?
The GUG55 is a 5 ft rolling swing gate for the Frontline guardrail system - the way to put a controlled opening in a continuous guardrail without leaving an unprotected gap. A support wheel carries the free end so the 60 in gate opens and closes smoothly, and a built-in pin lock secures it to the opposing rail.
Why use a gate instead of leaving a gap in the rail?
OSHA requires continuous protection along a railed edge, so an open gap is not allowed. The GUG55 gives a controlled, self-contained access point that closes and locks, keeping the edge protected when the gate is shut.
How does the gate open, close, and lock?
A built-in support wheel carries the free end of the 60 in gate so it rolls open and closed without sagging, and a built-in pin lock secures it quickly to the opposing rail. Always confirm the pin is engaged before relying on the closed gate.
How does the GUG55 install?
It slides into a guardrail base fitting and locks with grub screws, the same way the rest of the Frontline guardrail assembles. Set it where workers need to pass through the rail.
What colors and finishes are available?
It is powder coated in safety green or safety yellow for visibility, and is also offered hot-dip galvanized. Match the finish to the rest of your guardrail run.
What does the GUG55 fit?
It integrates with the Frontline guardrail system, sliding into the same base fittings as the straight rail sections. Use it as the access point within a continuous run.
Is the GUG55 OSHA compliant?
Yes - it meets the OSHA guardrail criteria of 29 CFR 1910 and 1926 and provides safe, controlled passage through the rail. Install and use it per the Frontline manual.
