GUB56 Guardrail 56 lbs Base

The Frontline GUB56 is a non-penetrating guardrail base that holds the guardrail upright with weight alone - no drilling. At 56 lbs it is the lightest base in its class, with two extended EPDM rubber supports on both sides for extra stability and a non-marring footprint.

Made from ASTM rated steel with an electrostatic paint finish, the rails slide perfectly into the base fittings and the system installs in just minutes. Four holes let you drill into the substrate for an optional fixed-application install. Built to the OSHA guardrail criteria of 1910 and 1926 - the building block of a free-standing perimeter.

Who Needs This Product

This product is a non-penetrating guardrail base - the weighted foot that holds guardrail posts and rails on a surface without drilling. Crews add bases to build or extend a free-standing guardrail run on flat roofs and slabs.

Features

No drilling, no roof damage

Holds the guardrail by weight alone, leaving membranes and decks intact.

Stable in wind and bumps

The two extended rubber supports widen the footprint so the post resists tipping.

One-worker handling

Light enough to carry and reposition by hand as the work moves along the edge.

Fixed when you need it

Four pre-drilled holes let you anchor the base permanently in exposed locations.

Pick up and reuse

Recover the bases at the end of the job and redeploy them on the next roof.

Pairs with the full guardrail line

Accepts the same rails, gates, and toe boards as the rest of the system.

Passive protection, installed right. A guardrail only protects if every base, post, rail, and toe board is set per the Frontline manual on a suitable surface. Have a competent person verify the installed system before it is relied upon, and re-inspect after any impact.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Guardrail system criteria for construction: 200 lb top-rail load, heights, and toe boards.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.29

Walking-working surface guardrail requirements for general industry.

Engineered design

Components are engineered to meet the applicable OSHA guardrail load criteria per the spec sheet.

Typical Applications

Flat roof perimetersFree-standing rail without roof penetration.
Slab edgesNon-penetrating leading-edge protection.
Roof replacementTemporary guardrail during re-roof.
OpeningsFence holes and skylights.
Run extensionsAdd bases to lengthen a guardrail.
Mixed substratesWeighted or optional fixed install.

How to Set Up the GUB56

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check bases, posts, rails, and fittings before each use.
  2. Plan the run. Lay out base/post positions per the manual maximum spacing for your edge.
  3. Set the bases. Place the non-penetrating bases (or clamp/anchor per the system) along the edge.
  4. Install posts and rails. Slide posts into the base fittings and seat top rails, mid rails, and toe boards.
  5. Secure. Tighten grub screws and connections per the manual.
  6. Verify. Have a competent person confirm the system before relying on it.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use and after any impact. Pull any component from service for the conditions below.

  • Posts and bases: bending, cracks, corrosion, or coating breakdown.
  • Clamping / counterweight: secure, no slipping under hand load.
  • Rails and toe boards: secure seating in the fittings, no damage.
  • Fasteners and grub screws: present, functional, tightened per the manual.
  • Markings: labels must be present and legible.

Remove any component from service that fails inspection. After any impact or load event, inspect the full system before reuse. Guardrail is passive protection: a damaged system gives false confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Frontline GUB56 guardrail base?
The GUB56 is a non-penetrating guardrail base that holds the guardrail upright with weight alone - no drilling. At 56 lb it is the lightest base in its class, with two extended EPDM rubber supports on both sides for added stability and a non-marring footprint. It is made from ASTM-rated steel with an electrostatic paint finish.
How does a non-penetrating base work?
The base uses its weight plus wide, rubber-footed supports to keep the guardrail post standing without anchoring into the deck. The rails slide into the base fittings, so a run goes up in minutes and leaves the roof or floor intact.
Will a 56 lb base hold a guardrail safely?
Yes - within the system and spaced per the Frontline manual, the GUB56 meets the OSHA guardrail criteria, and the two extended EPDM supports add stability against the required loads. Follow the manual for base spacing along the edge.
Can I anchor it down if I need to?
Yes - four holes let you drill into the substrate for an optional fixed-application install. That gives you the flexibility to run it non-penetrating or convert to a fixed base where conditions call for it.
Is the base non-marring, and what colors are offered?
The EPDM rubber supports give a non-marring footprint that protects finished roofs and decks. It is offered in safety green, safety yellow, or hot-dip galvanized.
What is it made of?
The GUB56 is made from ASTM-rated steel with an electrostatic paint finish for durability and visibility. Inspect it for damage and a stable footing before relying on the guardrail.
Is the GUB56 OSHA compliant?
Yes - it meets the OSHA guardrail criteria of 29 CFR 1910 and 1926 as the base of a complete guardrail system. Build the full system - posts, rails, and toe boards where needed - per the manual.
