Frontline ALPHA Steel Anchors

The Swivel Anchor That Follows the Worker

The STB5K ALPHA is a reusable bolt-on anchor for steel substrates with a D-ring that swivels a full 360° and pivots front to back through 180° — the connection point tracks the worker instead of side-loading as the task moves. It supports permanent and temporary installations, works as a single-user anchor point or in combination with other approved anchors, and the mounting bolt is included, so it is ready to use straight out of the bag.

Rated at 5,000 lbs tensile strength with a 310 lb maximum user capacity, the ALPHA is finished in galvanized zinc with yellow passivation for corrosion protection indoors and out, and is built tough for job-over-job durability. It meets ANSI Z359.18 and Z359.7 and is suitable for OSHA 1910 and 1926 work in vertical, horizontal, or overhead orientations.

Who Needs This Product

This product is an anchorage connector — the fixed tie-off point of a personal fall protection system. The structural steel it bolts to is the anchorage; the worker wears a full body harness; a lanyard or self-retracting lifeline connects the two. The ALPHA supplies the rated connection point with a swivel that keeps the connector aligned as the worker moves around it.

Features

360° swiveling D-ring

The D-ring rotates a full circle and pivots 180° front to back, keeping the connecting device aligned with the worker for best mobility.

Permanent or temporary

Supported for both permanent installations and temporary, take-it-with-you anchor points on steel structures.

Bolt included

Ships with the mounting bolt in the bag — ready to install without a hardware run.

Corrosion protected

Galvanized zinc with yellow passivation works in outdoor and indoor environments alike.

Built for job after job

Compact but built tough to withstand jobsite abuse and stay in service job over job.

Any orientation

Use it in vertical, horizontal, or overhead applications on qualifying steel.

StandardsANSI Z359.18, ANSI Z359.7; OSHA 1910, OSHA 1926

Qualify the steel first. The ALPHA anchor is only as strong as the steel it bolts to. A competent person must verify the structural steel substrate and the bolted connection per the user manual before anyone ties off. One worker per anchor point, 310 lbs maximum including tools.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.18

Meets the American National Standard for anchorage connectors used in personal fall protection systems.

ANSI Z359.7

Third-party product testing and certification requirements of the Z359 fall protection code.

OSHA 1910

Suitable for general industry fall protection applications when installed per the manual.

OSHA 1926

Suitable as an anchorage connector under OSHA construction fall protection rules.

Typical Applications

Steel erectionTemporary tie-off points that move with the connecting crew.
Structural steel maintenanceRecurring service work on plant and facility steel.
Overhead steelOverhead-rated mounting for work below beams and headers.
Vertical columnsSide-mounted points where the swivel prevents side-loading.
Industrial platformsEdge work on steel-framed mezzanines and walkways.
Bridge workInspection and painting crews on bridge steel.
Outdoor structuresPassivated zinc finish shrugs off weather exposure.
Rescue stagingA rated point for rescue plans where the manual allows.

Installation Overview

Follow the manufacturer's manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Verify the steel. A competent person confirms the structural steel substrate can support the loads required by the manual.
  2. Prepare the mount. Drill the mounting hole in the steel member at the planned location per the user manual.
  3. Bolt the anchor. Install the ALPHA with the included bolt and torque to the manual specification.
  4. Check articulation. Confirm the D-ring swivels and pivots freely with no binding or play in the base.
  5. Connect. Attach the lanyard or SRL connector to the D-ring; one worker per anchor.
  6. Relocate or leave in place. Unbolt and move it as a temporary point, or leave it installed permanently.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every 6 months. Pull the equipment from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Base and body: deformation, cracks, or corrosion in the steel.
  • D-ring: smooth 360° swivel and 180° pivot with no binding, spreading, or excessive play.
  • Bolt and connection: full engagement, correct torque, no thread damage.
  • Finish: galvanizing worn through with active rust on load-bearing surfaces.
  • Markings: product label and rating legible.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest loading, a D-ring that binds or has spread, deformation or corrosion of the base, bolt or thread damage, or any condition where the inspector cannot verify the anchor is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rated capacity of the STB5K?
The ALPHA is rated at 5,000 lbs tensile strength with a maximum user capacity of 310 lbs — one worker per anchor point, including clothing and tools.
Which standards does this anchor meet?
The STB5K meets ANSI Z359.18 (anchorage connectors) and ANSI Z359.7 (third-party certification testing), and is suitable for use under OSHA 1910 and OSHA 1926 when installed per the user manual.
Why does the swivel D-ring matter?
A fixed D-ring side-loads when the worker moves around the anchor. The ALPHA ring rotates 360° and pivots 180° front to back, so the connecting device stays aligned with the load path wherever the work goes.
Has the STB5K been lab tested?
Yes. The ALPHA is third-party tested, and the test report is linked in the Submittals section of this page alongside the spec sheet and user manual.
What do I pair with this anchor for a complete system?
A full body harness and a connecting device — a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline — complete the system. The STB5K supplies the rated anchorage connector; verify clearance for the connecting device you choose.
How often should it be inspected, and when is it retired?
Inspect before each use and have a competent person document an inspection at least every 6 months. Retire it after any fall arrest, or for deformation, swivel damage, corrosion, or anything that cannot be verified as safe.
What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Fall arrest catches a worker after a fall begins; fall restraint keeps the worker from reaching the fall hazard at all. The ALPHA can anchor either system — restraint is preferred when the work allows it because the fall never starts. For a deeper walkthrough with system examples, read our guide: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint. Use the Fall Protection Calculator on this page to size the right system for your job.
