C5104 Single-Leg Stretch Internal Shock-Absorbing Lanyard with 2 Steel Snap Hooks

The Malta Dynamics C5104 is a single-leg energy-absorbing lanyard that connects a worker's full body harness to an anchorage in a personal fall arrest system. Its elastic webbing rests at 4.5 feet and stretches out to 6 feet only when reach is needed, so there is less loose lanyard to trip over or snag on machinery in tight workspaces.

The internal shock absorber is built into the webbing, keeping the lanyard lightweight while limiting the maximum arresting force to 900 pounds or less. Both ends finish in a 3,600 lb gate self-locking steel snap hook, and the assembly is third-party tested under ISO 17025 to ANSI Z359.13-2013. This listing ships as a bulk pack so a crew is outfitted from a single line item.

Who Needs This Product

The C5104 is the connecting device in a personal fall arrest system - the energy-absorbing link between a worker's dorsal D-ring and a compatible anchorage. It is built for crews working in tight spaces and around machinery, where a fixed-length lanyard would leave slack to snag. Each connected worker also needs an ANSI full body harness and an anchorage rated for the load. Because it is a single-leg lanyard, the worker is unprotected during repositioning; for 100 percent tie-off use a double-leg lanyard instead.

Features

Stretch webbing

Rests at 4.5 feet and extends to 6 feet only when needed, cutting the loose lanyard that causes trips and snags in tight quarters.

Internal shock absorber

The energy absorber is built into the webbing, keeping the lanyard lightweight while limiting maximum arresting force to 900 pounds or less.

Two steel snap hooks

Self-locking alloy steel snap hooks on both ends with 3,600 lb side and front gate strength connect to the harness and anchorage.

High-visibility webbing

One-inch polyester webbing in a vibrant orange color keeps the lanyard easy to see and inspect on a busy jobsite.

Independently verified

Third-party tested under ISO 17025 accreditation to ANSI Z359.13-2013, with a Malta Dynamics Declaration of Conformity.

Bulk pack for crews

Ships as a multi-unit pack so a whole crew is equipped from one line item, with one base part number per lanyard.

A single-leg lanyard does not provide 100 percent tie-off. The worker is unprotected while disconnecting and reconnecting. Verify fall clearance below the work surface before each use, keep free fall within 6 feet, confirm the anchorage is rated for the load, and retire the lanyard immediately after any fall-arrest event or if the shock absorber shows any sign of deployment.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.13-2013

ANSI/ASSP standard for energy-absorbing lanyards and shock-absorbing connecting devices.

ANSI A10.32-12

ANSI/ASSP fall protection standard for construction and demolition operations.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M

Construction fall protection, including personal fall arrest system requirements under 1926.502.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910

General industry personal fall protection requirements for walking-working surfaces.

Typical Applications

Tight workspacesShort-reach tie-off where loose lanyard would snag on equipment.
Around machineryStretch webbing reduces trip and catch hazards near moving parts.
Industrial maintenanceGeneral industry tie-off on platforms and elevated work.
ConstructionLeading-edge and elevated work under OSHA Subpart M.
Steel and structuralConnecting to overhead or dorsal-level anchorage points.
Roofing crewsTie-off to a rated roof anchor on steep or low-slope roofs.
Tower and utilityShort-range positioning where a single leg is sufficient.
Fleet outfittingBulk pack equips a full crew from one purchase.

Use Overview

Use per the Malta Dynamics lanyard user instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check the webbing, stitching, shock absorber, and both snap hooks before each use.
  2. Verify the harness. Wear an ANSI-compliant full body harness, fitted and adjusted, with the dorsal D-ring centered between the shoulder blades.
  3. Verify the anchorage. Confirm the anchorage is rated for the personal fall arrest load and located to keep free fall within 6 feet.
  4. Calculate clearance. Add free fall, deceleration distance, harness stretch, and a safety margin, and confirm that sufficient fall clearance is maintained below the work surface.
  5. Connect. Clip one snap hook to the dorsal D-ring and the other to the anchorage, confirming each gate is fully closed and locked.
  6. Minimize swing falls. Keep the anchorage as directly overhead as possible to reduce pendulum swing.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every six months or per your program. Remove the lanyard from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Webbing: cuts, frays, abrasion, burns, chemical damage, or broken fibers.
  • Stitching: pulled, cut, or broken threads anywhere on the assembly.
  • Shock absorber: any sign of activation, deployment, or the warning label being exposed.
  • Snap hooks: cracks, deformation, corrosion, or a gate that does not close and lock.
  • Labels: must remain legible and intact.

Retirement triggers: any fall-arrest event, any sign the shock absorber has deployed, or any defect listed above. A lanyard that has been exposed to a fall must be permanently removed from service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Malta Dynamics C5104 lanyard used for?
The C5104 is a single-leg energy-absorbing lanyard, the connecting device in a personal fall arrest system. It links a worker's full body harness dorsal D-ring to a rated anchorage and absorbs energy during a fall to keep the maximum arresting force at 900 pounds or less. The stretch webbing rests at 4.5 feet and extends to 6 feet only when reach is needed.
What is the maximum arresting force and worker capacity?
The internal shock absorber limits the maximum arresting force to 900 pounds or less, well within the OSHA 1,800 pound limit for a body harness. The worker capacity range is 130 to 310 pounds including tools and equipment.
Does a single-leg lanyard provide 100 percent tie-off?
No. With a single-leg lanyard the worker is unprotected while disconnecting and reconnecting to move between anchor points. For continuous 100 percent tie-off while repositioning, use a double-leg lanyard such as the Malta Dynamics C5106 so one leg always stays connected.
How much fall clearance does the C5104 require?
Required clearance is the sum of free fall distance, the shock absorber deceleration distance, harness stretch, the height of the worker, and a safety margin. Free fall must not exceed 6 feet. Always calculate total clearance below the work surface before tying off, and use the Fall Protection Calculator below to run the numbers.
Which standards does the C5104 meet?
Per the spec sheet, the C5104 meets ANSI Z359.13-2013 and ANSI A10.32-12 and is compliant with OSHA 1926 Subpart M, OSHA 1910, and OSHA 1926.502. It is third-party tested under ISO 17025 accreditation per the ANSI testing protocols.
What connectors are on the C5104, and what gate strength do they have?
Both ends have a self-locking alloy steel snap hook. The connectors are rated for 5,000 pounds minimum tensile strength, and the gates carry a 3,600 pound side and front load rating, meeting the ANSI 3,600 pound gate requirement.
What else do I need to build a complete fall protection system?
The C5104 is the connecting device only. Each worker also needs an ANSI full body harness and a rated anchorage, such as a roof anchor or anchorage connector. Size the lanyard free fall and deceleration distance to the fall clearance available below the work surface, and use the Fall Protection Calculator below to plan the system.
