P-00149-3 Intermediate By-Pass Adaptor

The Malta Dynamics P-00149-3 is an intermediate by-pass adaptor that adds to any MD Post to help workers continue along the horizontal path of the I-beam or concrete beam they are walking on. Its design holds the system's horizontal cable in place while still leaving room to pass the snap hook of a lanyard through the adaptor - so a worker never has to disconnect from the lifeline cable.

Adding intermediate posts is common where there is little clearance between the walking surface and an obstruction below, typically the ground. The by-pass adaptor reduces horizontal cable sag and breaks a long span into shorter, lower-sag sections. Sold as one each.

Who Needs This Product

The P-00149-3 is for crews running a Malta Dynamics MD Post horizontal lifeline who need an intermediate support point - especially on long runs or where clearance below the walking surface is tight. It is a system accessory, not a standalone anchor. It mounts on an MD Post to support the horizontal cable, lets a worker pass the lifeline mid-span without unclipping, and works within an established two-worker MD Post system where each worker wears an ANSI full body harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline.

Features

Pass-through, stay connected

A worker passes the snap hook of the lanyard through the adaptor at an intermediate post without ever disconnecting from the horizontal lifeline cable.

Holds the cable in place

The unique design keeps the system's horizontal cable seated and supported at the intermediate point along the run.

Reduces cable sag

Adding an intermediate post with the by-pass adaptor breaks a long span into shorter sections and reduces horizontal cable sag.

Built for tight clearance

Common where there is little clearance from the walking surface to an obstruction below, typically the ground, where less sag matters most.

Adds to any MD Post

The adaptor can be added to any MD Post stanchion - the I-beam clamp post or the concrete bolt-on post - in the system.

Sold individually

Sold as one each, so you add exactly the number of intermediate points your run and clearance require.

An accessory, not an anchor. The by-pass adaptor is part of a complete MD Post horizontal lifeline system and is never used as a standalone tie-off point. Install it per the system manual, never mix it with components not designed and tested for the MD Post system, never exceed two workers per system, and confirm fall clearance below the work surface before tying off.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Construction fall protection systems criteria for the horizontal lifeline system this adaptor supports.

ANSI Z359.1

Fall protection code the MD Post horizontal lifeline system is tested to as a complete assembly.

System-Only Use

Use only as a component of a Malta Dynamics MD Post horizontal lifeline system, never as a standalone anchor.

Two-Worker System Limit

The MD Post system the adaptor supports accommodates a maximum of two workers at a time.

Typical Applications

Long lifeline runsIntermediate support across spans up to 60 feet.
Low clearanceTight space between the walking surface and the ground.
Sag controlShorter cable sections that limit horizontal sag.
Continuous travelMid-span pass-through without unclipping.
Steel erectionIntermediate points along an I-beam MD Post run.
Concrete decksIntermediate points on a bolt-on MD Post run.
Bridge and industrialSupported lifeline across structural spans.
Two-worker crewsKeeps a pair of workers connected along the line.

Installation Overview

Install per the Malta Dynamics MD Post horizontal lifeline system manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check the adaptor and the MD Post it mounts to for damage before installation.
  2. Plan the run. Identify where clearance is tight or sag must be reduced and place an intermediate post there.
  3. Set the post. Install the intermediate MD Post stanchion to proper anchorage per the manual.
  4. Add the adaptor. Mount the by-pass adaptor on the post so it supports the horizontal cable.
  5. Route the cable. Seat the lifeline cable so it stays in place while leaving room for a lanyard snap hook to pass.
  6. Verify clearance. Confirm fall clearance below the work surface before any worker ties off.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use as part of the system walk. Remove the adaptor from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Adaptor body: bending, cracks, or corrosion.
  • Cable seat: deformation, sharp edges, or burrs that could damage the lifeline cable.
  • Mounting: any looseness where the adaptor attaches to the MD Post.
  • Function: any condition that prevents the cable from seating or a snap hook from passing as intended.
  • Labels: must remain legible and intact.

Retirement trigger: after any fall-arrest event on the system, the entire system - including the by-pass adaptor - must not be used again until carefully inspected.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Malta Dynamics P-00149-3 by-pass adaptor used for?
The P-00149-3 is an intermediate by-pass adaptor that adds to any MD Post to help workers continue along the horizontal path of the beam they are walking on. It holds the system's horizontal cable in place while leaving room to pass the snap hook of a lanyard through the adaptor, so a worker never has to disconnect from the lifeline cable. It is sold as one each.
How does the by-pass adaptor reduce cable sag?
Adding an intermediate post with the by-pass adaptor breaks a long span into shorter sections and supports the cable mid-run, which reduces horizontal cable sag. Intermediate posts are commonly used where there is little clearance between the walking surface and an obstruction below, typically the ground.
Do I disconnect from the lifeline to pass an intermediate post?
No. The adaptor is designed so a worker passes the snap hook of the lanyard through it at the intermediate post without ever needing to disconnect from the horizontal lifeline cable, keeping the worker continuously tied off as they travel the line.
Which MD Post does the adaptor work with?
The by-pass adaptor can be added to any MD Post stanchion - the P-00041-1 I-beam clamp post or the P-00041-10 concrete bolt-on post - within a Malta Dynamics MD Post horizontal lifeline system.
Is the by-pass adaptor a standalone anchor?
No. It is a system accessory used only as part of a complete MD Post horizontal lifeline system, never as a standalone tie-off point. Never mix it with components that have not been designed and tested for the MD Post system.
What else do I need to run the system?
A complete two-worker system needs MD Post stanchions - P-00041-1 for steel I-beams or P-00041-10 for concrete or steel - and the P-00147-60 horizontal lifeline cable assembly that spans between them. Add the P-00149-3 by-pass adaptor at intermediate posts to reduce sag. Each worker also needs an ANSI full body harness and a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline.
Which standards does the system meet?
The MD Post horizontal lifeline system the adaptor supports meets OSHA 1926.502 and is tested to ANSI Z359.1 as a complete assembly, with a maximum of two workers per system. Use the Fall Protection Calculator below to confirm fall clearance for your run.
