Malta Dynamics Self-Retracting Lifelines

Wild Boar SRL with Steel Snap Hook, 30 ft and 50 ft

The Malta Dynamics Wild Boar Self-Retracting Lifeline pairs an impact-resistant polymer housing with a rugged 3/16-inch galvanized steel cable built to withstand daily wear on the harshest job sites. A heavy-duty steel snap hook and an integrated swivel connection keep the tie-off secure and the cable running smooth, so workers stay mobile without fighting the line.

Rated as a Class 1 SRL for anchorage at or above the dorsal D-ring, the Wild Boar supports a single worker from 130 to 310 lb with a maximum arresting force of 1,800 lbf and a maximum arresting distance under 42 inches. Available in 30 ft (C4001) and 50 ft (C4002) cable lengths and tested to ANSI Z359.14-2021 and OSHA standards, it delivers dependable overhead fall arrest for general construction, steel, and industrial work.

Who Needs This Product

The Wild Boar SRL is the connecting device in a personal fall arrest system - it links a worker's dorsal D-ring to an overhead anchorage at or above that D-ring and locks instantly to arrest a fall. The galvanized steel cable suits abrasive, high-wear environments where a web SRL would not hold up. Each worker still needs an ANSI full body harness and a compatible overhead anchorage rated for the system. The SRL protects one worker; pick the 30 ft or 50 ft cable length to match your working radius and clearance.

Features

Galvanized steel cable

A rugged 3/16 inch galvanized steel cable resists abrasion and jobsite wear far better than web lifelines in harsh conditions.

Heavy-duty steel snap hook

A steel snap hook with steel hardware gives a secure, durable connection to the dorsal D-ring of a full-body harness.

Integrated swivel

A swivel connection point reduces cable twisting and lets the worker move and turn while the line pays out and retracts smoothly.

Impact-resistant housing

A streamlined, impact-resistant polymer housing is easy to handle and transport and protects the internal retraction mechanism.

Two cable lengths

Choose 30 ft (C4001) or 50 ft (C4002) to match your working radius, anchorage height, and required fall clearance.

Consistent retraction

Internal components deliver reliable, controlled retraction, keeping the cable taut and out of the way during work.

For overhead use only. The Wild Boar SRL is a Class 1 device rated for anchorage at or above the dorsal D-ring. Confirm your anchorage meets the strength requirement, calculate fall clearance and swing-fall clearance before each use, and never use a unit with a kinked or corroded cable or one that has arrested a fall. Each worker also needs an ANSI full body harness.

Compliance Standards

ANSI/ASSP Z359.14-2021

The current ANSI standard for self-retracting devices. The Wild Boar SRL is tested as a Class 1 device.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M

Construction fall protection, including personal fall arrest system requirements under 1926.502.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502

Fall protection systems criteria and practices for construction work.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910 / 1910.66

General industry personal fall arrest requirements covering anchorage and connecting devices.

Typical Applications

Steel erectionAbrasive structural work where a steel cable outlasts web.
General constructionMobile overhead tie-off across a 30 or 50 ft radius.
Industrial maintenancePlant and mill work in high-wear environments.
Roofing and deckingOverhead anchorage above the dorsal D-ring.
Tower and structuralClimbing and platform work with a fixed overhead anchor.
Oil, gas, and energyRugged duty where cable resists abrasion and grit.
Bridge and infrastructureLong-radius arrest from an overhead anchorage.
DemolitionDurable arrest in debris-heavy work areas.

Use Overview

Use per the Malta Dynamics self-retracting lifeline instruction manual. The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect. Check the housing, cable, hook gate, swivel, and load indicator for kinks and broken wires before each use.
  2. Anchor overhead. Connect the SRL to an anchorage at or above the dorsal D-ring that meets the system strength requirement.
  3. Don the harness. Put on an ANSI full-body harness and confirm a snug fit.
  4. Connect. Clip the steel snap hook to the dorsal D-ring and confirm the gate is fully closed and locked.
  5. Verify clearance. Calculate required fall clearance and swing-fall clearance below the work surface before starting work.
  6. Work. Let the cable extend and retract smoothly and keep slack out of the system.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before each use, with a documented competent-person inspection at least every six months (or more often per your program). Remove the SRL from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Housing: cracks, deformation, or impact damage.
  • Cable: kinks, birdcaging, broken wires, severe corrosion, or rust scale.
  • Retraction: cable that does not retract smoothly or fails to lock when pulled sharply.
  • Hook and swivel: bent gate, weak gate spring, corrosion, or a swivel that binds.
  • Load indicator: any sign the indicator has deployed.
  • Labels: must remain legible and intact.

Retirement triggers: any fall-arrest event, a deployed load indicator, or any kinked, birdcaged, or broken-wire cable. Remove the unit from service immediately and tag it so it cannot be reused.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the C4001 and C4002 Wild Boar SRL?
They are the same Class 1 SRL in two cable lengths. The C4001 has a 30 ft galvanized steel cable and the C4002 has a 50 ft cable. Choose the length that matches your working radius and the fall clearance available below the work surface.
Why choose a steel cable SRL over a web SRL?
The Wild Boar uses a 3/16 inch galvanized steel cable that resists abrasion, heat, and grit far better than synthetic web. It is the better choice for steel erection, industrial maintenance, demolition, and other high-wear environments where a web lifeline would degrade quickly.
Where can I anchor the Wild Boar SRL?
As a Class 1 device it is rated for anchorage at or above the dorsal D-ring. Connect it to an overhead anchorage that meets the system strength requirement, then clip the steel snap hook to the dorsal D-ring of an ANSI full body harness.
What are the arresting force and arresting distance?
The Wild Boar SRL has a maximum arresting force of 1,800 lbf and a maximum arresting distance under 42 inches. Use these with your anchorage height to calculate required fall clearance before each use.
What worker weight range does it support?
The SRL is rated for a single user in the 130 to 310 lb capacity range, including the worker plus tools and equipment.
Which standards does the Wild Boar SRL meet?
Per the spec sheet, the SRL meets ANSI/ASSP Z359.14-2021 and OSHA fall protection standards, including 1926 Subpart M, 1926.502, OSHA 1910, and 1910.66. A Declaration of Conformity for each length is linked in the Submittals section.
What else do I need for a complete fall arrest system?
The SRL is the connecting device only. Each worker also needs an ANSI full body harness and an overhead anchorage at or above the dorsal D-ring that meets the system strength requirement. Use the Fall Protection Calculator below to confirm fall clearance for your setup.
