H500 Welding Harness with FR Webbing

The Miller H500 Welding Harness is built for hot work: specially formulated heat resistant and flame retardant webbing that still flexes with body contours, an FR Velcro label pouch, and quick connect buckles at the chest and legs. Back and side D-rings cover fall arrest and positioning in one harness.

Certified to ANSI Z359.11, CSA Z259.10, and compliant with OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140, the H5WS1 supports a 420 lb maximum working load with smart impact indicators, resettable lanyard keepers, and a dedicated SRL web link.

S/M fits workers up to 5 ft 10 in and 170 lb, or up to 190 lb at 5 ft 6 in and under. Universal (L/XL) covers the broad middle and is the most popular size. XXL/XXXL fits workers over 6 ft who weigh over 270 lb, and any worker from 350 to 400 lb. Lighter boundary bands are overlap zones where either size fits: size down for a trim fit or up for room over layers. Some Miller spec sheets list these as Size 1 (S/M), Size 2 Universal (L/XL), and Size 3 (2XL and 3XL). Based on the manufacturer's published Miller sizing chart; verify fit per the user manual before first use.

Who Needs This Product

Standard polyester webbing and welding do not mix: spatter, slag, and radiant heat degrade it invisibly. The H5WS1 replaces the webbing itself with a heat resistant, flame retardant formulation, protects the labels in an FR pouch, and keeps the visible stitch pattern easy to inspect after hot work. Welders, boilermakers, and shipfitters working at height get fall arrest, positioning, and heat resistance in one platform.

Features

Heat Resistant FR Webbing

Specially formulated flame retardant webbing resists spatter and radiant heat while flexing with body contours around the legs and shoulders.

FR Label Pouch

A self-contained FR material Velcro pouch protects the labels from hot work so they stay legible for inspections.

Side Positioning D-Rings

Hip-level D-rings accept a positioning lanyard for hands-free work at a fixed location.

Quick Connect Buckles

QC hardware at the chest and legs clicks together in seconds, even in welding gloves.

Visible Stitch Pattern

The improved stitch pattern makes post-hot-work inspections faster and surer.

Smart Impact Indicators

Clearly identifiable indicators show at a glance whether the harness has been loaded in a fall.

Hot work still damages FR gear. Flame retardant webbing resists spatter, but any charring, glazing, or hardened spots found during inspection retire the harness. Check the impact indicators and stitch pattern before every use.

Compliance Standards

ANSI Z359.11

Certified to the ANSI/ASSE Z359.11 standard for full body harnesses, covering design, testing, and marking requirements.

OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140

Meets OSHA requirements for personal fall arrest system body wear in both construction and general industry.

CSA Z259.10

Certified to CSA Z259.10 for full body harnesses, marked for use on Canadian jobsites.

ANSI Z359.2

The inspection program follows ANSI Z359.2: user inspection before each use plus documented competent person inspection at least annually.

Typical Applications

Welding, cutting, and grinding at height in construction and fabrication.
Boilermaker and shipfitting work with positioning at the joint.
Refinery and plant hot work with US and Canadian certification needs.
Structural steel welding using the side positioning D-rings.
Maintenance welding on towers, bridges, and elevated structures.
Any at-height task where spatter would destroy a standard polyester harness.

Donning Overview

  1. Hold the harness by the back D-ring and shake it out so the straps hang free without twists.
  2. Slip the shoulder straps on like a vest, keeping the webbing flat against the body.
  3. Connect the chest buckle and position the chest strap across the middle of the chest.
  4. Fasten each leg buckle so the strap allows a flat hand between the strap and the leg, but not a fist.
  5. Work through all five adjustment points until the dorsal D-ring rests between the shoulder blades, then stow the strap ends.

Full donning and adjustment instructions are in the Miller harness manual linked in the documentation section below.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect this harness before each use, and have a competent person other than the user formally inspect it at least annually per ANSI Z359.2. Check each point below and record the results on the inspection form linked in the documentation section.

  • Webbing: cuts, frays, burns, chemical damage, UV fading, or broken stitching anywhere on the harness.
  • Hardware: D-rings and buckles for cracks, corrosion, distortion, or sharp edges.
  • Adjusters and keepers: slippage, missing keepers, or strap ends that will not stay stowed.
  • Labels: present and legible, including the size, standards, and serial information.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event, any webbing or hardware defect found during inspection, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the harness is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this a welding harness?
The webbing itself is a heat resistant, flame retardant formulation, the label pouch is FR material, and the stitch pattern is designed for fast inspection after hot work. A standard polyester harness degrades invisibly under spatter and radiant heat.
What are the side D-rings for?
They accept a positioning lanyard so the welder can lean into the joint and work hands-free. They are rated for positioning only; fall arrest always connects to the dorsal D-ring.
Will quick connect buckles work with welding gloves?
Yes. QC hardware clicks together positively with heavy gloves on and releases only with a deliberate two-action press.
What do the impact indicators show?
The stitched indicators deploy visibly if the harness is loaded in a fall arrest. Any deployed indicator means the harness is done: remove it from service immediately, even if the webbing otherwise looks fine.
What is the maximum working load?
The H5WS1 is rated for a 420 lb maximum working load, which includes the worker plus all clothing, tools, and equipment carried.
Is this harness CSA certified for Canada?
Yes. The manufacturer certifies it to CSA Z259.10 in addition to ANSI Z359.11 and OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140. Verify the CSA marking on the label at receipt.
When does an FR harness get retired?
Inspect before each use and after every hot work session. Retire it for any charring, glazing, hardened webbing, deployed impact indicator, fall arrest event, or failed competent person inspection per ANSI Z359.2.
