Velocity Standard Full Body Harness, Universal S-L

The Guardian 01700 Velocity is the compliance harness that made Guardian a jobsite standard: durable polyester webbing, five points of adjustment at the chest, shoulders, and legs, and low-profile pass-through buckles that stay out of the way all day. Universal S-L sizing fits the majority of workers straight off the truck.

Certified to ANSI Z359.11 and compliant with OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140, the Velocity supports workers from 130 to 420 lbs. Wear-indicating webbing shows a red inner core when replacement is due, dual reusable lanyard keepers stow unused connector legs and release under snag loads, and a customizable ID patch records user and inspection details without marking the webbing.

Who Needs This Product

The Velocity is the harness for the price-conscious crew that still refuses to compromise on certification: a genuine ANSI Z359.11 harness with the details that matter day to day, breakaway lanyard keepers so a snagged leg releases instead of pulling the worker, wear-indicating webbing that tells the inspector when it is done, and an ID patch for compliance records. It is the same harness included in the Bucket of Safe-Tie kit. Crews that want padding, quick-connect buckles, or more hardware step up to the Series 1 and Series 3 lines.

Fit before the first step up. Adjust all five points so the dorsal D-ring sits between the shoulder blades, the chest strap crosses mid-chest, and leg straps allow a flat hand but not a fist. A harness that shows red core webbing anywhere is done: retire it immediately.

Donning Overview

Donning must follow the Guardian Velocity instruction manual (85047). The sequence below is an overview only.

  1. Inspect first. Check webbing (no red core showing), stitching, D-ring, and buckles before every use.
  2. Shake out and orient. Hold by the dorsal D-ring; straps fall into place without twists.
  3. Arms through. Put the harness on like a jacket, shoulder straps over both shoulders.
  4. Buckle the chest. Connect the pass-through chest buckle at mid-chest height.
  5. Buckle the legs. Pass each leg strap through its buckle; snug so a flat hand fits but a fist does not.
  6. Adjust and check. Set all five points, confirm the dorsal D-ring sits between the shoulder blades, and stow loose ends in the keepers.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect before every use, and have a competent person perform a documented inspection at least every six months under ANSI Z359.2 practice. Remove the harness from service for any of the conditions below.

  • Webbing: any red inner core showing, cuts, fraying, abrasion, burns, or chemical damage.
  • Stitching: broken, pulled, or abraded threads, especially at load-bearing junctions.
  • D-ring: cracks, corrosion, deformation, or excessive movement.
  • Buckles: cracks, deformation, or pass-throughs that do not seat fully.
  • Labels: missing or illegible, including the ID patch record.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event, any red core webbing showing, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the harness is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size range does the universal Velocity cover?
The 01700 is a universal S-L harness with five points of adjustment at the chest, shoulders, and legs, fitting the majority of workers. Larger crew members should choose an XL-XXL harness from the Guardian Series 1 line.
What is wear-indicating webbing?
The Velocity webbing is woven with a red inner core. When abrasion wears through the outer fibers, red shows through as an unmistakable visual signal that the harness must be retired, taking the guesswork out of webbing inspections.
What do the breakaway lanyard keepers do?
The dual reusable keepers stow the unused leg of a lanyard so it does not dangle or snag. If a stowed leg catches on structure with excessive force, the keeper releases the leg instead of transmitting the load to the worker.
Which standards does the Velocity meet?
The 01700 is certified to ANSI Z359.11-2021 for full body harnesses and meets OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140, with a 130 to 420 lbs capacity including clothing, tools, and equipment. It is tested in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
How do pass-through buckles work?
One buckle plate passes through the other and seats flat, creating a low-profile connection with no protruding hardware. They are simple, durable, and stay out of the way against the body during work.
How should the harness fit?
Adjust so the dorsal D-ring sits between the shoulder blades, the chest strap crosses mid-chest, and each leg strap is snug enough that a flat hand slides under but a fist does not. Loose ends stow in the keepers.
Is this the same harness as in the Bucket of Safe-Tie kit?
Yes. The Guardian 00815 Bucket of Safe-Tie includes this Velocity harness along with a 50 ft vertical lifeline assembly and a Temper roof anchor, all packed in a 3.5-gallon bucket.
