Who Is Overholt Metal Sales?

Founded in 2005 in Montezuma, Georgia, by Henry Overholt and his family, Overholt Metal Sales & Building Supply addressed a regional need for high-quality and reliable metal roofing. The company has since expanded significantly. They opened Overholt Metal Roofing Supply in Arcadia, Florida, in 2015 to serve a broad customer base across Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. Today, Overholt Metal operates with over 70 dealers across multiple states while maintaining a commitment to affordability, quality, and exceptional service.

Overholt specializes in manufacturing metal roofing components cut to order from 26- and 29-gauge steel. Their extensive product range includes tailored panel profiles, lumber products, pressure-treated wood, and specialty flooring. Additionally, their selection of portable buildings, including greenhouses, gazebos, and screen rooms, has solidified their reputation as a comprehensive one-stop shop for builders, contractors, and homeowners.

Why Are Compatible Fall Protection Anchors Critical for Standing Seam Panels?

Overholt Metal standing seam panels offer a sleek, modern appearance with concealed fasteners that eliminate potential leak points. However, these features also create challenges for installing fall protection equipment. Unlike exposed-fastener roofs, you cannot drill into standing-seam panels for traditional fall-protection anchors without jeopardizing structural integrity and voiding manufacturer warranties. Using compatible fall protection systems is essential for maintaining worker safety and the performance of the roofing system.

To ensure OSHA compliance while protecting the structural and watertight integrity of the roof, we recommend the following specialized components:

  • Standing Seam Roof Anchor (SSRA1): This anchor serves as the foundation of the safety system. It clamps securely to compatible standing seams without drilling, preserving the warranty and the roof's weathertight seal.
  • SSRA2 Adjustable Roof Jacks: These mount directly to the SSRA1 to support 10-foot walkboards. This setup provides workers with a stable and level platform for navigating sloped roofs.
  • SSRA3 Anchor Plates: These aluminum spanner plates provide attachment points for temporary horizontal lifelines, facilitating 100% tie-off compliance for multiple workers.
  • 100 Foot SSRA Temporary HLL Kit: This kit provides a complete, non-penetrating lifeline solution for rapid deployment on expansive Overholt Metal industrial projects.
  • 120 Foot Super Anchor Permanent HLL Kit: This system provides a permanent, non-penetrating cable solution for long-term facility maintenance, using 5-inch galvanized steel riser posts.
  • Ridge Pro Steep Assist Anchor: This anchor hooks securely over the roof peak to provide a reliable tie-off point for slopes between 6:12 and 12:12, where seam-mounted anchors may not be compatible.

Proper Attachment: Set Screws and Torque Requirements

Your safety and the certified holding power of the SSRA1 anchor depend on correct set screw application. We provide specialized fastening options based on the material gauge of your Overholt Metal panels:

  • Cupped Tip Stainless Steel Set Screws: Use these exclusively on 22-gauge steel panels. Torque them to 90 inch pounds for a secure lock.
  • Nylon Tipped Set Screws: Apply these to 22- and 24-gauge steel panels to achieve certified holding power. Torque them to 180–200 inch pounds for maximum strength.
  • Maintenance: Treat nylon tips as consumables. Replace them every 3 to 5 uses to ensure they maintain the necessary coefficient of friction.

CRITICAL WARNING: NO IMPACT GUNS

Never use an impact gun to install set screws. Over-torquing with an impact driver will crush the standing seam, damage the anchor hardware, and void the Overholt Metal manufacturer's warranty. Always use a calibrated torque wrench for final installation.

Overholt Metal Sales 1 Inch Standing Seam Nailstrip panels offer a premium metal roofing solution with a seamless design. These panels feature a hidden fastener system that eliminates exposed screws, reducing leak risk. The portable standing seam roll former from Overholt allows on-site production in lengths ranging from 2 feet to 100 feet, ensuring a precision fit with minimal waste. Available in 24 and 26-gauge steel, these panels provide 16-inch-wide coverage and 1-inch-high ribs. Finishes include bare Galvalume with a 25-year warranty or painted Cool Chemistry reflective colors with a 40-year warranty. These energy-efficient panels reflect solar radiation, reducing cooling costs. They require a minimum roof slope of 3:12 for proper drainage when installed over solid decking.

Because nailstrip seams may not be compatible with seam-mounted anchors, we recommend the Ridge Pro Steep Assist anchor for Overholt 1-inch Nailstrip panels on roof slopes ranging from 6:12 to 12:12. This ridge-mounted system hooks securely over the roof peak, allowing workers to maintain 100% tie-off without penetrating the panels or requiring direct seam attachment.

American Engineering vs. Bargain Imports

When you install high-performance Overholt Metal systems, your choice of fall protection hardware reflects your commitment to quality. Unbranded, imported fall protection anchors lacking verifiable engineering documentation are currently flooding the market. To truly guarantee worker safety, ISO 17025 testing labs must prove the reliability of an anchor through rigorous testing. This level of certification ensures the equipment will withstand extreme dynamic loads. By choosing the SSRA system, you are investing in American-made reliability while providing the compliance data needed to protect your crew and your business.

Safety Tips For Standing Seam Roofs

  • Ensure Proper Footwear for Stability: Navigating metal roofs demands footwear designed for maximum traction. High-traction, slip-resistant boots provide the grip needed to maintain stability on steep, wet, or icy surfaces.
  • Develop OSHA-Compliant Safety Plans: A well-executed safety plan should include detailed fall protection strategies, emergency rescue procedures, and compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Set Up Protective Guardrail Barriers for Work Zones: Installing guardrails or warning lines is essential for defining safe work zones, particularly on expansive or low-slope roofs.
  • Promote a Culture of Safety: Encouraging open discussions about hazards and hosting regular safety training can help prevent accidents before they happen.
  • Use Specialized Anchor Systems for Standing Seam Roofs: Standing-seam metal roofs require specialized, non-penetrating anchors. Avoid anchors that require installation over hidden clips, as locating these clips is difficult.
  • Equip Workers with High-Quality Safety Gear: Harnesses, lanyards, and fall arrest systems should be comfortable, properly fitted, and well-maintained.
  • Install Permanent Roof Anchor Systems: For buildings that require frequent roof access, permanent roof anchors offer fixed tie-off points that simplify safety for ongoing maintenance.
  • Prioritize Ladder Safety Training: Workers should inspect ladders for defects, set them on stable ground, and follow the 4-to-1 rule for secure placement.
  • Encourage the Use of Trauma Straps: Trauma straps help relieve pressure on a worker's legs while awaiting rescue, maintaining circulation and preventing serious injury.
  • Consult Experts for Curved Metal Panels: Consulting with experienced safety professionals ensures that you use appropriate anchorage methods and equipment to safeguard workers and the roof.

Howie Scarboro, C.E.O. and co-founder of Fall Protection Distributors, L.L.C., recognized the need for continued improvements in roofing safety during the 2010 MetalCon show in Las Vegas. He joined forces with SnoBlox-Snojax, a leader in snow retention and seam clamping technology for metal roofs, to create the SSRA1 prototype. Tested by Gravitec for OSHA/ANSI certifications, the SSRA1 proved to be the industry's lightest, most robust, and most universal-fit anchor point for standing seam roofs. Fall Protection Distributors, L.L.C. was born in 2015, shaping the future of fall protection and instilling confidence in the industry.
