8928 D-Ring Extension, 18 Inch

The Miller 8928 solves the blind reach: an 18 inch webbing extension with a snap hook that clips to the dorsal D-ring and a D-ring on the other end that hangs where the worker can actually see and reach it. Connecting an SRL or lanyard stops being a two-person job.

Compatible with any brand of full body harness and built to meet OSHA and ANSI standards, the extension installs in seconds and stays on the harness as a permanent convenience upgrade.

Who Needs This Product

The extension is for anyone who has chased a dorsal D-ring with a snap hook they cannot see: solo workers, bulky winter gear, and SRL programs where workers connect and disconnect many times a shift. It also brings the connection point within reach for workers with limited shoulder mobility. Remember it adds 18 inches to the fall arrest system, which belongs in the fall clearance math.

Features

Reach Without the Contortion

The D-ring end hangs over the shoulder where the worker can see it, turning a blind fumble into a one-hand connection.

Locking Snap Hook

The snap hook end locks onto the harness dorsal D-ring and stays put as a semi-permanent installation.

Universal Compatibility

Works with any brand or style of full body harness with a standard dorsal D-ring.

High-Strength Webbing

Rated as a structural component of the personal fall arrest system, not a convenience strap.

Fast Setup

Clips on in seconds with no tools, and moves between harnesses just as fast.

Inspection Friendly

A simple two-hardware, one-strap build makes pre-use inspection a ten-second check.

Add 18 inches to your fall clearance. The extension becomes part of the fall arrest system and adds its length to total fall distance. Recalculate clearance with the extension included before the first use.

Compliance Standards

OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140

Meets OSHA requirements for personal fall arrest system body wear in both construction and general industry.

ANSI Z359.11

Certified to the ANSI/ASSE Z359.11 standard for full body harnesses, covering design, testing, and marking requirements.

System Component

As part of a personal fall arrest system, the extension counts toward total system length and fall clearance calculations.

Typical Applications

Solo workers who connect their own SRL or lanyard to the dorsal ring.
SRL programs with many connections and disconnections per shift.
Winter work where bulky clothing buries the dorsal D-ring.
Workers with limited shoulder mobility.
Rental and loaner harness fleets that see many different users.
Any harness where a supervisor wants visible confirmation of connection.

Installation Overview

  1. Open the locking snap hook and clip it to the harness dorsal D-ring.
  2. Confirm the gate is fully closed and locked on the D-ring.
  3. Route the extension over the shoulder so the D-ring end hangs within view.
  4. Connect the SRL or lanyard to the extension D-ring and verify the gate locks.
  5. Recheck fall clearance with the added 18 inches before working.

The extension stays installed on the harness between uses.

Inspection and Retirement

Inspect the extension with the harness before each use and during every competent person inspection.

  • Webbing: cuts, frays, burns, chemical damage, or broken stitching.
  • Snap hook: gate closes and locks, no cracks, corrosion, or distortion.
  • D-ring: no cracks, corrosion, distortion, or sharp edges.
  • Stitch patterns: intact at both hardware terminations.

Retirement triggers: any fall arrest event, any defect found during inspection, or any condition where the inspector cannot positively verify the extension is fit for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the D-ring extension do?
It moves the connection point from the middle of your back to over your shoulder. The snap hook end locks to the dorsal D-ring; the D-ring end hangs where you can see it and connect one-handed.
Does it work with any harness?
Yes. It is compatible with any brand or style of full body harness that has a standard dorsal D-ring, including every Miller, Guardian, and FallTech harness we carry.
Does it affect fall clearance?
Yes, and this is the critical point: the extension adds 18 inches to the total length of the fall arrest system. Recalculate your fall clearance with the extension included before using it.
Is it rated for fall arrest?
Yes. It is built and rated as a structural component of the personal fall arrest system and meets OSHA and ANSI standards.
Can I leave it on the harness?
Yes. Most users install it once and leave it as a permanent part of the harness, inspecting it with the harness before each use.
Does it work with SRLs and lanyards?
Both. Anything that would connect to the dorsal D-ring connects to the extension D-ring the same way.
How often does it need inspection?
Inspect it with the harness before each use: webbing for cuts and frays, both hardware ends for cracks, distortion, and gate function. Retire it after any fall arrest event.
